Verdict: Japan has a real residential water-recycling system, but it does not turn every drop into drinking water or make plumbing disappear. WOTA’s residential WOTA Unit is designed to recycle up to 97% of household wastewater under conditions that vary with use. It still needs electricity, rainwater replenishment, tanks, maintenance and dedicated plumbing; WOTA says its household-use water is not recommended for drinking.

Which Japanese water-recycling machine does the headline mean?

The likely reference is WOTA Unit, a residential water-circulation system made by Japanese company WOTA. It is often conflated with WOTA BOX, a separate portable system intended mainly for emergency showers and temporary facilities. Neither product means an ordinary house can simply remove its pipes.

Product Designed role Company-reported recycling claim Typical setting
WOTA Unit Residential water circulation, with a separate route for toilet wastewater Up to 97% of household wastewater; actual results vary by conditions and use Residential or decentralized infrastructure
WOTA BOX Portable water recycling, particularly for showers Approximately 98% in the company’s portable shower-use setup Disaster shelters, temporary housing, welfare facilities and outdoor use

WOTA BOX is not evidence that a typical house can abandon municipal service: it is a portable system with a different use case. WOTA says two adults can assemble a complete WOTA BOX setup in about 15 minutes, depending on site conditions.

How WOTA Unit treats and reuses household water

The system is a building-services installation, not a countertop purifier. WOTA describes collecting household wastewater, treating it through multiple stages, monitoring operation, and returning treated water for household uses. In broad terms, the process is:

  1. Rainwater is collected and stored to replenish water lost from the system.
  2. Wastewater from bathing, kitchens and laundry is collected through the home’s plumbing.
  3. Biological treatment uses microorganisms to break down organic matter.
  4. Membrane filtration removes suspended material and other contaminants.
  5. Disinfection uses deep ultraviolet and/or chlorine treatment.
  6. Sensors monitor water quality and operating conditions, and treated water is routed back to approved household uses.

Toilet wastewater is handled through a dedicated treatment path rather than being mixed indiscriminately with the other household flows. WOTA describes treated toilet water as being reused for flushing; fixture and plumbing design must account for this separate route.

The Japanese product specification lists the residential water-use unit at approximately 1,680 mm wide, 780 mm deep and 1,400 mm high, with a dry weight of 170 kg. It lists 100 VAC power and average consumption of 105 W. These figures describe a substantial mechanical installation; they are not a complete estimate of the footprint or structural requirements for tanks, access and associated plumbing.

What the 97% recycling figure does—and does not—mean

“Up to 97%” is WOTA’s maximum residential claim, not a guaranteed result for every household or an independently established annual savings figure. The company says the rate depends on the usage environment and water-use methods. It should not be read as “97% of all water becomes drinking water” or as proof of permanent water independence.

Some water must be replenished, and actual performance depends on household demand, storage, treatment and operating conditions. WOTA’s English product page illustrates capacity with a 650-liter total storage scenario, comprising a 150-liter base tank plus optional tanks. The associated use examples are company estimates for that stated scenario, not independent performance tests:

Use Company example for the stated 650-liter storage scenario
Dishwashing 5.3 gallons; about 32 uses
Toilet 4 gallons; about 43 uses
Shower 21 gallons; about 8 uses
Laundry 40 gallons; about 4 uses

Those examples do not establish how many people a system can serve in every home. Treatment takes time, and stored water limits how much is available at once. Several simultaneous high-demand activities can outpace available storage or processing capacity.

Is the treated water safe to drink?

No drinking-water claim is supported by WOTA’s product description. The company says the household-use water conforms to Japan’s 51-item tap-water quality standard, but also explicitly says the water is not recommended for drinking. A stated standard and a manufacturer’s drinking recommendation are distinct issues; the system should be understood as producing water for household reuse, not as a drinking-water purifier.

Why Japan is exploring decentralized water systems

Japan’s interest is not just a consumer-appliance story. Aging water and sewer networks, shrinking populations in some rural areas, and earthquake disruption create challenges for centralized infrastructure. In some places, maintaining long pipe networks for fewer residents is difficult; localized systems may provide another way to deliver services in remote or disaster-affected settings.

Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism has published material on considering decentralized water systems, including a notice dated March 31, 2026. WOTA also announced the Water 2040 Fund on July 8, 2025, describing support for municipalities planning and assessing decentralized systems. WOTA reported that its residential system had reached Technology Readiness Level 6 and was moving toward Level 7—development and demonstration stages, not evidence of universal commercial deployment.

What a residential installation would require

A decentralized system changes the home’s water architecture rather than eliminating it. A project would need to address collection, storage, treatment, distribution and the applicable approvals before construction or retrofit.

  • Separate plumbing routes: Household wastewater and toilet wastewater need to reach their designated treatment paths. Retrofitting a home built around conventional drains may require significant rerouting.
  • Rainwater collection and backup supply: WOTA identifies rainwater replenishment as part of the residential system. A site must account for dry periods and any permitted backup freshwater source.
  • Space and structural support: The listed 170-kg unit is only part of the installation; tanks and maintenance access also take space. A qualified designer must assess the building and layout.
  • Electricity and outage planning: Pumps, sensors, controls, filtration and disinfection depend on power. Backup power or a contingency water plan matters if service must continue during an outage.
  • Maintenance and consumables: Filters and other components need attention. WOTA warns against chemicals and food products that could overload biological treatment or filters.
  • Local code review: Plumbing, building, public-health, wastewater, rainwater-harvesting, backflow-prevention and utility-connection rules may apply. Japanese product claims do not establish approval under U.S. or local codes.

Before choosing this approach for a project, an owner would need answers about water sources, wastewater separation, output uses, service support, consumables, outage response and local approval. WOTA’s public material does not establish a universal cost or savings case for an individual home.

What can go wrong in day-to-day operation?

  • Drought or low rainfall: Rainwater may not cover replenishment needs, so the site may need an allowed backup source.
  • Power or equipment failure: A failed pump, sensor, membrane or control can interrupt water service to the property unless a fallback is available.
  • Unsuitable inputs: Grease, food waste and harsh chemicals can burden biological treatment or damage filtration components; household habits affect system operation.
  • Demand exceeding capacity: Storage and treatment rate limit simultaneous use, so a high-demand household may need careful system sizing and operating expectations.
  • Maintenance burden: Treatment work ordinarily handled by utility operators shifts toward the property owner, installer, service provider or municipality.

Can an American homeowner buy and install WOTA Unit?

WOTA’s Japanese FAQ says current handling is limited to domestic sales in Japan and directs prospective purchasers to contact the company. The official material does not provide a verified U.S. retail price or a standard U.S. consumer installation pathway. Availability, installation support and local code acceptance should therefore be confirmed directly with WOTA and the relevant authorities before treating the system as an option for a U.S. project.

For a homeowner comparing approaches, the distinction is practical: municipal service is a conventional, regulated utility arrangement; rainwater harvesting can supplement supply but does not itself treat wastewater; greywater reuse handles a narrower stream; and wells or septic systems have their own site, permitting and maintenance requirements. WOTA Unit is a more integrated decentralized concept, but it shifts equipment, upkeep and operational responsibility onto the property or project.
