A TV that will not turn on is not automatically defective. The problem may be a dead outlet, tripped breaker, failed power strip, loose cord, remote-control fault, temporary software issue, or internal hardware failure. Start with the standby indicator: no light points first to the external power path, while a solid or blinking light calls for a different set of checks.
Safety first
Stop troubleshooting immediately if you notice smoke, sparks, crackling, a burning smell, water exposure, melting, or a visibly damaged cord. Disconnect power only if you can do so safely and arrange qualified service.

Do not open the TV, replace an internal fuse, bypass safety components, or attempt board-level repairs. Televisions can contain hazardous components that may retain electrical charge after unplugging. Internal repairs should be handled by a qualified technician.

What the standby light tells you
| What you see | What it usually means | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| No light, sound, logo, or response | The external power path or standby circuit may be interrupted. | Check the outlet, breaker, power strip, cord, and direct-wall connection. |
| Solid standby light | The TV is receiving at least some power but may not be responding to the remote. | Try the TV’s physical power button. |
| Blinking standby light | The TV may be reporting a model-specific fault. | Record the color and blink pattern and check the manufacturer’s support page. |
| The light changes, then goes out | The TV may be failing during startup. | Try a manufacturer-directed power reset; seek service if it repeats. |
| The TV appears on but the screen is black | This may be a picture, input, backlight, or connected-device problem rather than a power failure. | Follow the black-screen checks below. |
An unlit indicator is not conclusive on every model because some TVs allow the standby light to be disabled in settings. Treat it as an important clue, not a diagnosis.

Run this one-minute power check
- Unplug the TV.
- Test the same outlet with a lamp or another small appliance.
- Try a different known-working outlet if practical.
- Check whether a wall switch controls the outlet.
- Check the circuit breaker or fuse panel.
- Reconnect the TV directly to the wall for testing.
A lamp confirms basic outlet operation, but it does not constitute a complete electrical diagnosis. If a breaker trips again immediately, stop resetting it repeatedly and have the circuit investigated.
Bypass the power strip or smart plug
Temporarily remove surge protectors, extension arrangements, smart plugs, energy-saving outlets, and switched power strips from the chain. A strip may be switched off, overloaded, failed after a surge, or controlled by an offline smart plug. Some energy-saving outlets do not provide continuous power.
Direct-wall testing is a diagnostic step, not a recommendation to operate sensitive electronics permanently without suitable protection. Once the fault is identified, follow the TV and electrical-safety guidance appropriate to your home.

Inspect the power cord and adapter
Check the connection at the wall and at the rear of the TV. If the cord is detachable, unplug it and firmly reconnect both ends. Also check any external adapter or intermediate connector.
Look for looseness, bent contacts, fraying, melting, discoloration, or other damage. Do not use a damaged cord, and do not substitute an adapter or cable merely because its connector fits. The replacement must match the TV’s electrical and safety requirements and should come through the manufacturer or an approved parts channel.

Some TVs have an integrated, non-removable cord. Do not try to remove or reseat a permanently attached cable. If the TV is wall-mounted and the connection is difficult to reach, do not pull, twist, or partially remove the set just to access it.

Try the TV’s physical power button
Find the button underneath the frame, along a side edge, or on the rear panel. Press it once rather than relying on the remote.
- If the TV starts, the television may be healthy and the problem is likely the remote, its batteries, pairing, or communication with the TV.
- If the TV does not respond, continue with the reset and indicator-light checks.
The exact button location varies by model. Both LG and Sony use the physical button as an important way to separate a remote problem from a TV power problem.
If the remote is the real problem
When the physical button works, replace both batteries with fresh batteries of the correct type and confirm their orientation. Remove anything blocking the TV’s sensor and point an infrared remote directly at the TV.
Bluetooth and voice remotes may need charging or pairing. A phone-based remote app is useful only when the TV is already connected to the same network and the app supports that model. A phone-camera infrared test is not universal: it may not apply to Bluetooth or radio-frequency remotes and can vary by phone camera.

Perform a safe power reset
- Turn the TV off if it responds.
- Unplug it from the outlet.
- Wait for the interval specified for your model.
- Reconnect it directly to a known-working wall outlet.
- Try the physical power button before the remote.
Samsung’s current troubleshooting instructions specify 30 seconds unplugged. Some Sony help documentation specifies 2 minutes for certain TV families. The interval is therefore model-dependent; use the manufacturer’s instructions rather than treating one duration as universal.
A reset may clear a temporary power or software state. It is not a permanent repair if the problem repeatedly returns. Do not repeatedly power-cycle a TV that is smoking, sparking, clicking abnormally, or producing a burning smell.
Recent events matter
Note whether the failure followed a storm, blackout, brownout, power surge, move, cleaning, wall mounting, firmware update, or installation of a new HDMI device. Resolve an unstable household power problem before repeatedly testing the television.

Disconnect external equipment
Turn the TV off and temporarily disconnect cable or satellite boxes, streaming devices, game consoles, soundbars, AV receivers, HDMI switches, USB accessories, and other connected equipment. Then test the TV by itself.
This isolates confusing power-control commands, faulty cables, or a problematic accessory. It is an isolation step, not proof that an HDMI device commonly causes total loss of standby power.
Is it actually a black-screen or “No Signal” problem?
If the standby light changes or you hear startup sounds, the TV may be on even though no picture is visible.

- Press volume or menu and check for sound or an on-screen response.
- Press the input/source button and select the correct input.
- Disconnect external inputs and try the TV’s own menu.
- Check whether the screen shows a faint image. A flashlight test may suggest a backlight issue, but it is not definitive and does not require opening the set.
A “No Signal” message generally means the display is working but is not receiving a usable signal from a set-top box, streaming device, antenna, console, or other source. It does not by itself mean the TV has lost power. LG separates this condition from a genuine no-power fault in its no-picture and no-sound guidance.

Do not rely on universal charts such as “two blinks always means a failed power board.” Blink codes vary by brand, model family, region, and chassis. Record the indicator color, number of flashes, pauses, and whether the pattern repeats, then search the official support page for the exact model.
A persistent blinking indicator after the basic outlet, cord, and reset checks may require service. See Sony’s indicator-light troubleshooting and Samsung’s standby-light guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When the problem may be internal
If the TV remains unresponsive from both the remote and physical button after direct-wall testing and a model-appropriate reset, possible causes include a failed power board, standby-power circuit, main board, display-control circuitry, or backlight-related fault. Symptoms alone cannot reliably identify the failed component.
Arrange professional or manufacturer service when:
- The TV remains dead after testing a known-working outlet and cord connection.
- The standby light blinks persistently or the TV repeatedly shuts down.
- The set turns on briefly and then goes off every time.
- There is smoke, sparking, a burning smell, heat damage, or a damaged cable.
- The TV is under warranty or covered by a retailer protection plan.
- The fault began after a surge or other electrical event.
- The TV is wall-mounted and the connection cannot be reached safely.
Use the manufacturer’s official support channel for model-specific service and warranty information: Samsung, LG, or Sony.
Repair or replace?
Do not replace the TV before ruling out a dead remote, outlet, breaker, power strip, cord, or temporary control fault. Repair is more compelling when the set is relatively new, expensive, under warranty, recently purchased, or otherwise in good condition. Replacement becomes more reasonable after a technician confirms a major board or panel problem, the warranty has ended, the repair estimate is disproportionate to the TV’s current value, or the set has suffered repeated failures.

Do not assume a surge protector damaged the TV: the protector may have failed and interrupted power, or the surge may have damaged the television independently. A technician is needed to distinguish those possibilities.
Quick decision tree
- Is there any standby light? If no, test the outlet, breaker, power strip, cord, and direct wall connection. If yes, continue.
- Does the physical power button work? If yes, troubleshoot the remote. If no, perform the manufacturer’s power reset.
- Is the indicator blinking? Record the pattern and consult official model support.
- Does the TV appear to start but show no image? Test inputs, menus, connected devices, and possible backlight symptoms.
- Are there sparks, smoke, burning smells, or damaged wiring? Stop and seek qualified service.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long should I unplug my TV?
Follow the instructions for your exact model. Samsung specifies 30 seconds in its current troubleshooting path, while some Sony guides specify 2 minutes.
Can a surge protector stop a TV from turning on?
Yes. The protector itself may have failed or been switched off. Temporarily connect the TV directly to a known-working wall outlet to isolate the device.
Recommended Free Tools
How can I turn on a TV without its remote?
Use the TV’s physical power button, commonly located underneath the frame, on a side edge, or on the rear panel.
Should I open the TV to replace a fuse?
No. Internal components can remain hazardous after unplugging, and opening the chassis can create additional risks. Use qualified service.
When should I call a repair technician?
Seek service when the TV remains unresponsive after basic power checks and a model-appropriate reset, when a standby light blinks persistently, or whenever there is smoke, sparking, burning odor, visible damage, or unsafe access.
