Is Your Ring Camera Charging? Here’s How to Find Out!

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The quickest way to tell whether a Ring device is charging depends on its battery design. A removable Quick Release Battery Pack shows amber and green lights while charging and green only when full. A compatible doorbell with a built-in battery uses a blue circular LED that fills clockwise. Solar and plug-in models require a check in the Ring app and a comparison of the battery percentage over time.

The quickest way to check in the Ring app

Open the Ring app and look for the device’s power information. Ring documents two menu layouts, and the labels can vary by product family, region, and app version:

  1. Open the Ring app and tap the menu icon (☰).
  2. Tap Device Settings, then Device Health.
  3. Look under Power for Power Source and Battery Level.

If those options are not shown, try this alternative path:

  1. Tap Devices and select the camera or doorbell.
  2. Tap Device Settings.
  3. Select Power Settings.
  4. Check Battery Status, feature power usage, and—where available—Solar Status.

These paths are based on Ring’s charging guidance and battery-performance guidance. Your app may use different wording. Look for terms such as Device Health, Power, Power Settings, Battery Status, or Solar Status.

Remember that “connected” is not the same as “charging.” It may only mean that the camera has detected a cable, adapter, or solar accessory. Actual charging means the battery is increasing, or the physical battery indicator shows that charging is active.

How to tell from the physical lights

Cameras with removable batteries

On compatible Stick Up Cam, Spotlight Cam, and Outdoor Cam models, remove the Quick Release Battery Pack and connect it directly to USB power. Check the light on the battery pack, not necessarily a light on the camera:

  • Amber and green lights: The battery is charging.
  • Green light only: The battery is fully charged.
  • No lights: Check the cable, USB power source, outlet, and battery. A depleted or failed battery is also possible.

Ring says a battery can take up to 10 hours to charge fully, although the actual time depends on its starting level, cable, charger, temperature, and condition. See Ring’s instructions for charging Ring security camera batteries.

Doorbells with built-in batteries

On applicable battery-powered Video Doorbells with a built-in battery, connect the charging cable to the doorbell. The front circular LED fills clockwise in blue as charging progresses. A partially illuminated circle represents an approximate charge range; a fully illuminated or flashing blue circle indicates that charging is complete on applicable models.

This pattern does not apply to every Ring doorbell. Models that use a Quick Release Battery Pack use the battery pack’s amber-and-green indicator instead. Ring’s doorbell light-pattern guide lists model-specific behavior.

How to charge the battery

Removable Quick Release Battery Pack

  1. Open the camera’s battery compartment.
  2. Press the release tab and remove the battery.
  3. Connect the supplied USB or USB-C cable to the battery’s charging port.
  4. Connect the other end to a suitable USB power source.
  5. Wait until only the green light remains.
  6. Reinsert the battery until it clicks firmly into place.
  7. Close and secure the battery compartment.

After insertion, allow up to approximately 60 seconds for some cameras to power back on and reconnect.

Built-in-battery doorbell

  1. Remove the security screw if your model has one.
  2. Remove the doorbell from its mounting bracket.
  3. Connect the charging cable to the doorbell’s charging port.
  4. Wait for the LED to indicate a full charge.
  5. Reinstall the doorbell and security screw.

Do not try to remove a battery from a model designed with a built-in battery.

How to verify that a solar Ring camera is really charging

A solar panel provides a trickle charge, so the battery percentage may not rise quickly or continuously. Use this three-part check:

  1. Confirm compatibility. Match the exact camera generation and connector. Ring lists different USB-C and barrel-plug accessories for different camera families; see the USB-C solar-panel compatibility information.
  2. Check the app. Look for a recognized or connected power source and any available solar status.
  3. Compare percentages. Record the battery level, leave the camera connected through suitable daylight, then check again after a meaningful period.

Shade, winter sun, panel angle, dirt, damaged connectors, cable adapters, temperature, and frequent camera activity can all reduce solar input. A panel may be working while the battery still falls if the camera is using power faster than the panel supplies it. Some devices may also stop charging before 100% to help protect battery longevity.

How long does a Ring battery take to charge?

Ring says a full charge can take up to 10 hours. That is an upper guidance figure, not a guarantee that every setup reaches full charge in exactly 10 hours. Charging time varies with the battery’s starting percentage, the power adapter and cable, temperature, and battery age.

What to do if Ring says it is connected but not charging

  1. Reseat the battery. Remove a Quick Release Battery Pack and reinstall it until it clicks. The app may not register the new percentage if the pack is not seated correctly.
  2. Test the power source. Try another outlet or USB power source, and confirm it can power another device.
  3. Try another cable and adapter. Use the original Ring cable where possible, then test a known-good compatible cable and USB power adapter.
  4. Check the camera’s network status. If the device is offline, reconnect Wi-Fi. Weak Wi-Fi can increase power use through repeated disconnections and reconnections.
  5. Separate solar from battery testing. If possible, charge the removable battery from a known-good USB source. For solar models, test during strong daylight and inspect the panel, connectors, cable, and mounting position.
  6. Check temperature and usage. Cold weather, frequent motion events, repeated Live View sessions, linked devices, and power-hungry features can consume energy faster than it is supplied.
  7. Allow enough time. Recheck after an adequate charging period rather than relying on an immediate app refresh.
  8. Test another compatible battery. If a second known-good battery charges normally, the original battery may be aged or defective.

If both a compatible battery and a known-good power source fail, contact Ring support rather than repeatedly buying incompatible chargers or batteries.

Why the battery may keep dropping while plugged in

A declining percentage does not always prove that charging hardware has failed. The camera may be receiving some power but consuming more than it receives. Common causes include:

  • Frequent motion detection and recording
  • Heavy use of Live View
  • Linked-device activity
  • Weak Wi-Fi and repeated reconnections
  • Cold weather
  • Insufficient sunlight or a shaded solar panel
  • An aging battery
  • Higher-power camera features

Ring identifies motion activity, cold conditions, weak Wi-Fi, and battery age as battery-performance factors. Check the device’s health settings and network status before assuming the camera or battery is defective.

When to replace the battery, cable, or charger

Isolate the simplest failure first. Test another cable, adapter, and outlet before replacing the battery. Then test a second battery that is explicitly compatible with the exact Ring model. Do not assume that every USB-C, micro-USB, or barrel-plug accessory works with every Ring device.

A spare compatible battery is useful for avoiding camera downtime while another pack charges. A charging station can make sense for households with multiple removable-battery devices. Solar panels and permanent power adapters are better choices only when the camera, connector, installation location, and weather exposure are compatible. Ring’s official accessories catalog lists current products, but compatibility should be checked by exact model and generation.

Quick model-by-model checklist

Device type Where to check Charging signal
Spotlight, Stick Up, or Outdoor Cam with a removable pack Battery pack and Ring app Amber plus green while charging; green only when full
Built-in-battery Video Doorbell Front LED and Ring app Blue circle fills clockwise while charging
Solar camera App plus battery percentage over time Recognized power source plus measurable battery maintenance or increase
Wired-only camera Power and network status No rechargeable battery to monitor

The practical answer

First identify the power design. For a removable battery, amber and green means charging and green alone means full. For a built-in-battery doorbell, look for the blue circular LED filling clockwise. For solar or plug-in assistance, verify the recognized power source and compare battery percentages over time. If the level still falls, check seating, cables, power, Wi-Fi, temperature, sunlight, and usage before replacing the battery or camera.
