It may be one of Perth’s most striking courtyards, but the available account does not establish a citywide winner. In a PerthNow feature published on 31 December 2023, writer Casey Lister profiles Vanessa Ord’s private Nedlands home and calls its indoor garden one of the most beautiful courtyards they had seen.
What makes this Nedlands courtyard distinctive?
The courtyard sits in the middle of Ord’s home, described in the feature as 110 years old. From the living room, floor-to-ceiling windows frame a pond surrounded by cast iron plants, ferns and philodendrons. Creeping fig climbs the walls, devil’s ivy hangs from baskets, and a wooden bridge crosses the water between doorways.
A waterfall made from smooth river stones feeds the pond. Lister describes the effect as “a giant terrarium, built into the centre of the house.” The image is apt: the design draws the eye through glass into a planted, water-filled space enclosed by the home.
How the owners turned an unused brick space into a feature
Ord says the courtyard began as brick paving. After living with the house for about a year, the owners realized they were not using the space and chose to make it something to look at instead. As she told PerthNow: “We decided we wanted to make a feature of it rather than just a bricked area.”

How the garden continues beyond the courtyard
The planting extends into the surrounding property. A tall gum tree is underplanted with ferns and standard roses. At the other end, palms and philodendrons frame a swimming pool painted black. Ord said the owners wanted the pool “to disappear into the garden.”

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can it be called Perth’s most beautiful courtyard?
That depends on taste. Lister’s headline poses a subjective question, and the feature describes one garden; it does not compare Perth courtyards or apply objective judging criteria. The story supports calling Ord’s courtyard a compelling example of an indoor garden, not a verified citywide champion.
