Yes, air-drying clothes indoors can be reasonable when outdoor drying is not practical, but the laundry releases moisture into your home. If that moisture is not removed, it can contribute to condensation and, over time, damp and mould. Dry outdoors where you can; indoors, use ventilation and keep laundry away from radiators.
How indoor laundry can contribute to damp and mould
Washing and drying clothes are among the everyday activities that add moisture to indoor air. The risk depends not on a single load alone but on whether moisture can escape, as well as the home’s ventilation, temperature and condition. When moisture builds up, it can settle as condensation; repeated or persistent condensation can contribute to damp and mould. England’s government guidance describes this process and notes that building deficiencies, ventilation, heating and energy efficiency all matter.
This does not mean that one indoor drying session will cause mould. Nor should persistent damp or mould automatically be treated as a household lifestyle failure. The joint government guidance says it is “totally unreasonable to blame damp and mould in the home on ‘lifestyle choices’.” Building conditions and effective moisture removal need to be considered.
How to dry clothes indoors more safely
- Use outdoor space when practical. Outdoor drying avoids adding laundry moisture to the home. Oxford City Council and Barnsley Council both advise drying clothes outside where possible.
- Put an indoor airer in a ventilated room. If you have to dry clothes indoors, Oxford advises using a bathroom, closing the door and opening a window. Barnsley similarly recommends a bathroom with the door closed and an extractor fan running, or a window open. Follow the ventilation options that are practical and safe for your home.
- Keep laundry off radiators. Oxford advises against drying clothes on radiators. Use an airer instead; it holds the laundry but does not itself remove moisture from room air.
- Consider a dehumidifier as an additional moisture-control measure. Barnsley recommends one to extract moisture from the air. It does not replace adequate ventilation or remedy a building problem.
- If using a tumble dryer, follow its installation instructions. Oxford advises ensuring that a vented dryer exhausts outside. Check the product instructions for the specific dryer and installation.
NICE also recommends avoiding moisture-producing activities such as indoor air-drying if possible, or improving ventilation when they cannot be avoided: NICE guidance on preventing damp and mould.

Humidity readings: useful context, not a guarantee
The US Environmental Protection Agency recommends keeping indoor humidity between 30% and 50% and notes that higher humidity increases the likelihood of mould: EPA mould guidance. Treat that range as general US guidance, not a universal pass/fail test for whether a particular home can safely dry laundry indoors. A reading does not establish that a damp problem has been fixed.
The World Health Organization describes dampness and mould as influenced by moisture, temperature, ventilation and building materials. It says the evidence does not support recommending health-based quantitative limits for microbial contamination: WHO housing and health guidance.

When damp or mould keeps returning
Persistent condensation, damp or mould warrants attention to the home’s underlying conditions rather than relying on a change in laundry habits alone. England’s government guidance identifies ventilation, heating, energy efficiency and building deficiencies as relevant factors. Where ventilation systems are present, it advises that they be inspected and maintained by qualified professionals. The right response depends on the dwelling.
Damp and mould can produce allergens, irritants, spores and other toxins that harm health. UK government guidance lists respiratory effects including cough, wheeze and shortness of breath, and says damp and mould may cause or worsen conditions such as asthma and rhinitis. People with underlying health conditions or weakened immune systems may face greater risk. These are risks associated with damp and mould exposure; they are not evidence that indoor air-drying by itself causes illness. See the UK government health guidance.
