DIRIGERA is worth buying for an IKEA-centered smart home, but it is not an automatic $119.99 purchase for every IKEA or Matter device. It is most useful when you own several IKEA products, still use older TRÅDFRI devices, want IKEA’s Home smart app, or need a Thread Border Router for newer Matter-over-Thread products. It is often unnecessary if you only have one or two Matter devices and already own compatible Apple, Google, Amazon, SmartThings, or Home Assistant hardware.
What DIRIGERA actually does
DIRIGERA is IKEA’s current smart-home hub. It connects IKEA products to the IKEA Home smart app, where you can organize devices by room, create scenes and routines, set timers, and manage lights, blinds, outlets, sensors, speakers, and other supported products.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
It also performs three separate technical jobs:
- Hub: The central device for IKEA Home smart setup and control.
- Matter controller: It can commission and control supported Matter devices.
- Matter bridge: It can expose connected IKEA products—particularly older Zigbee-based products—to another Matter ecosystem.
- Thread Border Router: It connects compatible Matter-over-Thread devices to your home network.
Those capabilities make DIRIGERA more than a simple remote receiver, but Matter does not make it a universal smart-home hub. Device type, platform support, commissioning method, and available features still vary. IKEA explains the distinction in its Matter guide and Matter-compatible system guide.

Many IKEA smart products can perform basic functions with physical remotes or local controls. Adding DIRIGERA and the app enables:
#1 Best Overall
- Echo Hub — An easy-to-use smart home control panel redesigned for your home. Arrange controls on your dashboard to quickly adjust devices, view cameras, start routines, and more.
- Customize your dashboard — Arrange devices into sections and resize them to focus on what matters most. Create a personalized layout that matches how your family uses their connected devices.
- Reimagined for your home - With an Alexa+ and compatible Ring subscription (sold separately), get Ring camera event summaries to stay in the know. Search your Ring footage using simple voice commands. Create routines by voice, activate modes to manage multiple devices at once, and chat with Alexa to easily control your smart home.
- Home security for the whole family — Use Echo Hub to easily arm and disarm your compatible security system, making it easy for everyone in your family to manage home security. Use the Alexa app and compatible cameras, locks, alarms, and sensors to check in while you're out.
- Works with thousands of Alexa compatible devices — WiFi, Bluetooth, Zigbee, Matter, Sidewalk, and Thread devices sync seamlessly with the built-in smart home hub.
- App-based control from your phone.
- Rooms, groups, and coordinated control of multiple products.
- Scenes such as “movie,” “away,” or “bedtime.”
- Timers, schedules, and routines.
- Remote access where supported.
- Firmware and device management.
- Integration with Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and other Matter-compatible platforms, subject to their hardware and current requirements.
That makes the hub particularly useful in a growing IKEA installation. Controlling one bulb from a phone rarely justifies a $119.99 hub; coordinating lighting, blinds, sensors, outlets, speakers, and air-quality products is a different calculation.
Is DIRIGERA a replacement for the TRÅDFRI gateway?
DIRIGERA is the current hub for IKEA’s newer Home smart ecosystem, and older TRÅDFRI/Zigbee products are one of the strongest reasons to consider it. IKEA says DIRIGERA can bridge older IKEA devices into a Matter system.
However, do not assume that migration will preserve every room, remote assignment, scene, schedule, or automation exactly as it was. Before moving a large installation, document:
- Room names and device names.
- Remote and shortcut-button assignments.
- Scenes, schedules, and routines.
- Existing Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, or Home Assistant integrations.
Check the exact products against IKEA’s DIRIGERA support information before factory-resetting or dismantling an established system.
Matter and Thread: when do you need DIRIGERA?
Matter improves interoperability, but it does not mean every Matter product works identically in every app. A bridge may expose a device to another platform without reproducing all of its IKEA-specific controls, sensors, settings, or automation options.
New IKEA Matter devices may not require DIRIGERA if you already have:
- A compatible Matter controller.
- A Thread Border Router for Matter-over-Thread products.
- A platform that supports the particular device type and features.
DIRIGERA is more compelling when you want the IKEA Home smart app, older IKEA Zigbee products, and newer Matter products under one IKEA-managed system. IKEA’s current guide recommends DIRIGERA for that combined setup while acknowledging that suitable Matter infrastructure can make the hub optional.

What users like about DIRIGERA
IKEA’s U.S. product page currently shows a 3.6 out of 5 average from 712 reviews. That is a visible snapshot of customer experience, not a controlled reliability test. Positive reviews commonly describe:
- Straightforward initial setup.
- Convenient control of IKEA lights, blinds, outlets, and sensors.
- Useful rooms, scenes, and app-based control.
- Good value when many IKEA products share the system.
- A simpler alternative to assembling and maintaining a custom smart-home server.
The strongest positive case is a household already committed to IKEA products. In that situation, DIRIGERA provides a single first-party app and a central place for everyday controls.
What users dislike or report as difficult
The same IKEA review section includes reports of pairing failures, devices not being discovered, network-connection problems, confusing Matter onboarding, unexpected voice-assistant requirements, and concerns about Home Assistant interoperability. These are reported individual experiences, not proof that every DIRIGERA installation has those problems.
The recurring practical risks are:
- Network sensitivity: The hub must connect to your router by cable and depend on a stable home network.
- Pairing friction: A device can be Matter-compatible yet still require the correct pairing mode, code, controller, and Thread infrastructure.
- Feature differences: A device bridged into Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, or Home Assistant may expose fewer controls than it has in IKEA’s app.
- Price dissatisfaction: The current U.S. listing is $119.99, while older IKEA material showed a $69.99 U.S. price. The older price should not be treated as current availability.
- Advanced-user limitations: The IKEA app is simpler than Home Assistant, but that simplicity can restrict complex automations and detailed device control.
Read the reviews as evidence of possible friction, not as a definitive reliability score. Conditions such as router configuration, phone platform, Matter fabric, Thread topology, and device firmware can affect the result.

Current U.S. price and value
The U.S. IKEA listing shows DIRIGERA at $119.99 and lists article number 505.034.14. It also lists a 365-day return policy, subject to IKEA’s terms, and currently identifies iOS 16.4 or later and Android 10 or later as supported app requirements.
The price makes sense in proportion to the installation:
- One or two inexpensive devices: The hub may cost more than the convenience it adds.
- Several IKEA devices: The cost is spread across the system, while rooms, routines, scenes, and central management become more valuable.
- Older TRÅDFRI products: DIRIGERA can add modern app control and Matter bridging without abandoning the existing IKEA ecosystem.
- New Matter products: First check whether an existing controller and Thread Border Router already remove the need for another hub.
Also compare the full cost of alternatives. A Home Assistant setup may require separate Zigbee or Thread radio hardware, configuration time, backups, and ongoing maintenance. Conversely, a household that already owns the right Apple, Google, Amazon, or SmartThings hardware may avoid buying DIRIGERA altogether.
Setup requirements and basic installation
You need a Wi-Fi network, a router connection, the IKEA Home smart app, and a compatible phone. DIRIGERA connects to the router using the supplied cable; it is not a wireless-only hub.
- Connect DIRIGERA to power.
- Connect it to the router with the supplied cable.
- Install the IKEA Home smart app.
- Follow the app’s guided setup.
- Put each IKEA product into pairing mode.
- Add the product in the app.
- Assign it to a room.
- Create groups, scenes, schedules, and routines.
- Connect an external ecosystem if required.
- For Matter products, scan the Matter QR code or enter the numeric Matter code when prompted.
See IKEA’s DIRIGERA manual and Home smart setup guide for the current process.
What to do when pairing fails
- Confirm DIRIGERA has power and a wired connection to the router.
- Update the IKEA Home smart app and hub firmware.
- Confirm the phone is connected to the intended home network.
- Identify whether the product uses Zigbee, Matter over Wi-Fi, or Matter over Thread.
- For Matter-over-Thread products, confirm that a Thread Border Router is available.
- Use the product’s numeric Matter code if QR scanning fails. IKEA says the 11-digit code can be used as an alternative.
- Restart the hub, router, phone, and device before trying again.
- Check whether the device has already been commissioned to another Matter fabric.
- Consult the device-specific IKEA support page before resetting a large installation.
A Matter logo alone does not guarantee that a device will appear with every feature in every smart-home app. Platform support and the device’s specific connectivity method matter.
Does DIRIGERA work without the internet?
IKEA says its smart products are designed to provide basic functions without internet access or a remote server. That does not mean every feature remains available offline. Remote access, cloud integrations, software updates, voice services, and some setup functions still depend on network or internet connectivity.
In practical terms, local controls may continue working during an internet outage, while remote control and external-platform features may not.

DIRIGERA supports integration with Apple Home, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa, but “works with” should not be read as “every feature works identically.” The actual experience depends on the platform’s controller hardware, the device type, whether products are bridged or paired directly, and the current integration path.
An Apple TV or HomePod, compatible Google Nest hardware, or suitable Amazon or SmartThings equipment may already provide Matter and Thread infrastructure. In that case, DIRIGERA can still be valuable for older IKEA Zigbee devices and IKEA’s own app, but it may be redundant if your only goal is adding a few new Matter devices.

Home Assistant users should not treat DIRIGERA as universally compatible or universally unsuitable. It can provide a simpler IKEA-managed bridge, but advanced users may prefer direct Zigbee and Thread control for greater access to device entities, radio configuration, and automation options.

Community discussions describe mixed experiences involving Matter exposure, Thread Border Router coexistence, and device availability. Because results depend heavily on the exact network topology, Home Assistant users should test their planned arrangement before making DIRIGERA the center of the system.
Recommended Free Tools
Home Assistant Green is a better fit for users who want broad-brand support, local automations, and customization and are comfortable supplying compatible radio hardware and maintaining the system.
Alternatives to DIRIGERA
Use existing Matter hardware
This is the most economical option if you already have a compatible Matter controller and Thread Border Router and are adding only newer Matter devices. It is less attractive for older IKEA products or buyers who want the IKEA Home smart app.
Home Assistant Green
Choose it for multi-brand support, powerful local automations, and detailed customization. Expect more setup, maintenance, and potentially separate Zigbee and Thread hardware.
Aqara Hub M3
Aqara Hub M3 is a more natural choice for an Aqara-centered home. It is not the obvious replacement for IKEA-specific organization and support.

Philips Hue Bridge
Philips Hue Bridge makes more sense for a Hue-heavy lighting system. It does not replace DIRIGERA’s IKEA-centered functions.
SmartThings
Samsung SmartThings is a broader mainstream multi-brand platform, but check exact IKEA product support and feature mapping before choosing it as a replacement.
Support horizon
IKEA’s current U.S. support policy says it intends to provide DIRIGERA hub support, including security and compatibility updates, for three years from the date of purchase. IKEA says smart products paired with the hub receive support for five years after purchase. Products are expected to continue working through local controls and the hub afterward, but this is not a guarantee of indefinite feature development or compatibility.
Final recommendation
Buy DIRIGERA if you are building an IKEA-centered home, own several IKEA devices, are upgrading from TRÅDFRI, want IKEA’s app and routines, or need a Thread Border Router.
Buy cautiously if you are adopting newer Matter-over-Thread products but already have another smart-home platform. Confirm whether DIRIGERA adds anything beyond infrastructure you already own.
Skip or delay it if you have only one or two Matter devices, already have a compatible Matter and Thread setup, mainly use Philips Hue or Aqara, or expect a universal Zigbee hub.
Investigate carefully if Home Assistant is your primary system and you want maximum control over radios, entities, automations, and network topology.
