Coleus can be a perennial or an annual, depending on winter temperatures. It is a tender perennial in warm, frost-free climates, but frost-prone areas usually grow it as an annual. To keep a favorite through winter, bring a healthy plant indoors or take cuttings before frost arrives.

Why coleus is called both an annual and a perennial

The terms describe how coleus behaves in a particular climate. University of Illinois Extension classifies it as a tender annual in its plant profile and also explains that coleus is a tender perennial that colder-region gardeners often grow as an annual. In places where winter frost kills it, do not expect an outdoor plant to return reliably the following spring. Illinois Extension’s coleus profile and its guidance on overwintering tender plants explain the distinction.

How to grow coleus outdoors

Choose a spot for the cultivar

Coleus varieties differ in light tolerance: some suit shade or partial shade, while others tolerate full sun. Check the cultivar label instead of assuming all coleus need the same exposure. Sun-grown plants generally need closer attention to watering than shaded plants. University of Minnesota Extension’s coleus guidance describes the range of light conditions.

Plant after conditions warm

Coleus is very cold-sensitive. Minnesota Extension advises planting outdoors after soil temperatures rise above 60°F. Use soil rich in organic matter that holds moisture while draining well; in containers, use a pot with drainage holes.

  • Clip flower stalks if your goal is to favor foliage growth.

These care recommendations are from Minnesota Extension and Illinois Extension.

How to start coleus from seed or cuttings

Start from seed

Minnesota Extension recommends starting seeds indoors about eight weeks before the expected outdoor planting date. Coleus seeds need light to germinate; its guidance gives 10 to 20 days at 70 to 75°F. If you want a particular named cultivar, check that the seed packet or listing identifies it.

Root cuttings in water

  1. Cut a healthy stem 4 to 6 inches long.
  2. Remove the leaves from the lower part of the stem.
  3. Place the cutting in water and wait for roots; Minnesota Extension says rooting takes two to three weeks.

Root cuttings in potting mix

Penn State Extension describes taking a healthy tip about six inches long, setting it in moistened potting mix, and keeping it in a warm location. Its instructions say roots form in about three to four weeks. This is a separate method and timing from Minnesota Extension’s water-rooting guidance, not a head-to-head comparison.

How to keep coleus through winter

In a frost-prone climate, choose one of two practical approaches before the first frost: bring a healthy plant indoors or save a cutting to grow on. Illinois Extension describes digging and potting tender perennials, including coleus; Penn State Extension describes taking healthy stem cuttings to carry coleus into the next year. Neither source establishes a universal best method or comparative success rate.
