Sometimes—but compare the acidity printed on the bottle, not just the words “cleaning vinegar” and “white vinegar.” In the reviewed US examples, Heinz multi-purpose cleaning vinegar is listed at 6% acidity and Heinz distilled white vinegar at 5%. That is a product-specific comparison, not a universal rule: US white distilled vinegars generally contain 4–7% acetic acid, according to Poison Control.
Is cleaning vinegar stronger than white vinegar?
It can be, but the name alone does not establish the concentration. Check each product’s label. The examples below show why:

| Product | Labeled acidity | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Heinz Distilled White Vinegar | 5% | Heinz product listing, accessed 2026 |
| Heinz Original Multi-Purpose Extra Strength Vinegar | 6% | Publix product listing, accessed 2026; retailer listing, not a manufacturer technical bulletin |
| US white distilled vinegars generally | 4–7% acetic acid | Poison Control, accessed 2026; a general range, not a test of every brand |
For the two Heinz examples, 6% is one percentage point higher than 5%, or a 20% relative increase in the labeled percentage. That arithmetic does not show that the 6% product cleans 20% better: the reviewed sources provide no controlled head-to-head performance test. Consumer labels commonly express vinegar strength as percent acidity; do not treat that number as interchangeable with pH, which describes how acidic or alkaline a substance is.

What is the difference between cleaning vinegar and white vinegar?
“Cleaning vinegar” identifies an intended use, not one fixed acidity or a guarantee that a product is unsuitable for food. White distilled vinegar also varies in labeled acidity, and some products are marketed for both cooking and cleaning. Read the specific bottle for its concentration, intended uses, and food-use directions. If the label identifies a product for cleaning, do not assume it is food-grade; use a food-grade product for cooking or pickling and follow appropriate food-preservation guidance.

- VERSATILE PANTRY STAPLE: Perfect for cooking, pickling, marinating, and enhancing your favorite recipes with a crisp, tangy flavor.
- ALL-NATURAL & PURE: Made from 100% distilled white vinegar, free from artificial additives and preservatives for a clean, fresh taste.

- BULK SIZE FOR MORE VALUE: Large 1-gallon jug is perfect for high-volume cooking, canning, and cleaning needs, offering great savings.
For a practical comparison, check the labeled acidity, whether food use is stated, the surface or appliance maker’s care instructions, and whether you need ordinary soil removal or an antimicrobial claim. A higher percentage alone does not answer those questions.
What can cleaning vinegar be used for?
Vinegar’s acidity can help with mineral buildup and hard-water scale. The US Environmental Protection Agency’s green-cleaning brochure gives an acid-cleaner recipe using ¼ cup white distilled vinegar or lemon juice, ½ teaspoon liquid detergent, and ¾ cup warm water; it describes the mixture as useful for mineral buildup and some odors. Utah State University Extension explains that acidic white vinegar and lemon juice neutralize alkaline substances such as hard-water scale and recommends testing a formulation in a small, hidden area where possible (Home Cleaning Chemistry).

Does cleaning vinegar disinfect?
No. Do not rely on household vinegar as a disinfectant or sanitizer. The US EPA distinguishes the terms this way:

- “Cleaning removes dirt and organic matter from surfaces using soap or detergents.”
- “Sanitizing kills bacteria on surfaces using chemicals. It is not intended to kill viruses.”
- “Disinfecting kills viruses and bacteria on surfaces using chemicals.”
EPA says sanitizers and disinfectants are regulated antimicrobial pesticides. For a specific sanitizing or disinfecting claim, use a product registered and labeled for that purpose, following its directions and contact time. Poison Control also says vinegar is not effective against bacteria that cause wound infections; it should not be used to treat wounds or represented as sterilizing them.

How to use vinegar more safely
- Follow the product label and the surface or appliance maker’s care instructions.
- Do not mix vinegar with chlorine bleach. The combination releases highly irritating chlorine gas, according to Poison Control. More generally, do not mix cleaning products; check labels before using one product after another.
- Keep vinegar out of eyes and away from children. Poison Control warns that eye exposure can cause irritation and potentially corneal injury; rinse eyes thoroughly and immediately if exposure occurs.
- Avoid prolonged skin contact, which can cause burns. Do not use vinegar on skin or wounds as a home remedy.
- When a surface’s compatibility is not clear, avoid assuming that a stronger concentration is safe; consult its care instructions and test an inconspicuous area when appropriate.
