Cherry is a good general-purpose firewood: it offers medium heat, is easy to split, and rates well overall in the University of Missouri Extension’s comparison. It does not match the heat-per-cord figures listed for some hickories and oaks, and it should be burned only when dry. Use a moisture meter and aim for 20% moisture or less rather than relying on a fixed seasoning schedule.
How much heat does cherry firewood produce?
Oklahoma State University Extension lists black cherry at 19.5–20.5 million recoverable Btu per cord. That is a reference value, not a promise of heat delivered by a particular load: species, wood condition and measurement assumptions affect the result. Appliance efficiency and operating conditions also determine how much usable heat reaches a room.
For context, the same Oklahoma State table lists shagbark hickory at 25.3–27.7 million Btu per cord and white oak at 24.0–29.1 million. These figures help compare reported heat values; they do not guarantee what any specific stove or fireplace will produce. The University of Missouri Extension rates cherry’s relative heat as medium.
How does cherry compare as firewood?
| Wood | Heat value per cord | Other comparison notes |
|---|---|---|
| Black cherry | 19.5–20.5 million recoverable Btu (Oklahoma State University Extension) | Medium heat, easy to split, good overall; may throw some sparks (University of Missouri Extension) |
| Shagbark hickory | 25.3–27.7 million Btu (Oklahoma State University Extension) | Not stated in the cited comparison |
| White oak | 24.0–29.1 million Btu (Oklahoma State University Extension) | Not stated in the cited comparison |
Cherry’s mix of medium heat and easy splitting makes it a practical everyday option. The University of Missouri table also reports no heavy smoke and some sparks for cherry. Actual smoke depends in part on whether the wood is dry and how the appliance is operated.

How can you tell when cherry is ready to burn?
Check moisture rather than treating elapsed time as proof. UNH Extension recommends firewood at 20% moisture or less for efficient burning. Illinois Extension recommends below 20%. A meter reading gives you a more useful check than guessing from how long the wood has been stacked.
- Split a log to expose fresh wood; do not rely only on the outside surface.
- Press the moisture meter’s prongs into the newly split face, following the meter’s instructions.
- Test several pieces from different parts of the stack. A single reading may not represent the whole pile.
Cracks at the ends, lighter weight and a ringing sound can be clues that wood is dry, but UNH Extension identifies a moisture meter as the most reliable approach.

How long does cherry take to season?
There is no reliable cherry-specific seasoning time established by the cited guidance. Illinois Extension says fresh firewood generally takes at least six to nine months to reach below 20% moisture; UNH Extension advises seasoning indoor firewood for six to twelve months and aiming for 20% moisture or less. Those are general time estimates, not a guarantee that every cherry log will be ready on schedule. Drying varies with the wood and conditions, so measure before burning.
Is cherry suitable for a fireplace or wood stove?
Cherry can be used as general-purpose firewood in a suitable, properly maintained appliance, provided it is dry. Wet firewood produces more smoke and less heat and contributes to creosote buildup, which can increase chimney-fire risk. Maintain the appliance and chimney as recommended for your system.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Where should you source firewood?
Prefer wood sourced near where it will be burned, and check applicable local rules. UF/IFAS Extension includes cherry among suitable firewood choices in Florida and recommends local sourcing to help reduce the spread of pests that can travel in firewood. That recommendation is regional; local restrictions and conditions may differ.
