Plain, uncoated corrugated cardboard can be safe in a vegetable garden when used as temporary sheet mulch. It is most useful for smothering lawn and weeds while you establish a bed. Remove tape, labels, staples and other packing pieces; avoid waxed, glossy, slick or heavily colored boxes; wet the sheets; overlap them modestly; and cover or secure them. Cardboard is a weed-control layer, not an unconditional soil amendment, and it should not be allowed to block water or air movement around crop roots.
Extension recommendations agree on those precautions but differ on layer thickness and removal timing. The right approach depends on whether you are killing turf before building a bed or suppressing weeds around plants already growing.

When cardboard makes sense in a vegetable garden
Cardboard works by excluding light from weeds and turf. With no light, the plants beneath it gradually exhaust their stored energy and die. The sheet then softens and decomposes, especially when kept moist and covered with organic material. This is called sheet mulching or sheet composting.
Use it for two jobs:
- Preparing a new bed: Lay cardboard over lawn or weedy ground, then add compost or another growing medium.
- Suppressing weeds in an existing bed: Place it between crop rows or around established plants, leaving clear space around stems.
Do not treat cardboard as a cure for contaminated soil. If a site may contain lead or other metals because of its former use, have the soil tested and follow local remediation advice. A sheet of cardboard does not remove contaminants or make unsafe soil safe.

Which cardboard is the safest choice?
Start with clean, plain brown corrugated sheets. A box’s appearance is only a screening guide, not a laboratory test, so use the most basic material available and remove every non-paper component you can.
| Material feature | How to handle it | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Plain, uncoated brown corrugated board | Generally suitable after packing materials are removed | It is biodegradable and intended for temporary soil contact |
| Waxed, glossy, laminated or slick board | Do not use | Coatings can slow breakdown and interfere with water movement |
| Heavy color printing | Avoid when possible | Clemson Extension cautions that colorful inks may contain heavy metals; ink formulations vary |
| Tape, labels, plastic film or staples | Peel out and discard before laying sheets | These materials do not belong in the soil and can leave plastic or metal behind |
| Heavy-duty box seams | Avoid the box or cut out the glued seams | Clemson notes that some heavy-box seam adhesives may contain chemicals unlike the plant-starch glue between ordinary corrugated layers |
Black printing is described by Clemson Extension as vegetable-based in the guidance it published in 2025, but that statement should not be generalized to every manufacturer or ink. If you cannot identify a box’s coating or adhesive, choose a different box or use purpose-made garden paper.
How to prepare cardboard before spreading it
- Flatten the boxes. Open folded flaps so the sheet lies evenly against the soil.
- Remove packing materials. Pull off tape and shipping labels, remove staples, and cut away plastic handles, foam and strapping.
- Inspect the surface. Reject sheets that are waxed, shiny, laminated, oily, strongly dyed or contaminated with chemicals.
- Cut around questionable seams. If a heavy box has thick adhesive seams that will not separate cleanly, do not put those sections in the bed.
- Wet the cardboard completely. Soaked sheets conform to the ground, resist wind and begin decomposing. Dry cardboard can repel irrigation until it is thoroughly rewetted.
Using cardboard to kill lawn before a new bed
In-ground bed
Iowa State Extension recommends one or two cardboard layers over the lawn, followed by an organic mulch such as compost, shredded bark or leaf mold. Overlap adjoining sheets so sunlight cannot reach seams. Keep the material damp, then cover it well enough that wind cannot lift it.
Expect the process to take several months to kill the plants underneath. Once the turf is dead, break up or remove the sheet if it is still restricting air or water movement. Paper materials commonly break down within one growing season, but actual decomposition depends on moisture, temperature, microbial activity and the thickness of the board.

Raised bed built over turf
University of Maryland Extension describes placing plain, non-waxed cardboard over turf or weeds, removing tape first, and covering it with 2–4 inches of compost. Its raised-bed guidance says vegetation generally dies in 8–12 weeks and decomposes in place with the cardboard or newspaper. This method lets you build the bed without digging out the lawn, but the finished bed still needs enough depth for the crops you plan to grow.
Using cardboard for weeds in an existing vegetable garden
For paths, wide spaces between rows or a new planting area, use one layer where possible. Iowa State also describes one or two layers for weed suppression, while Virginia Cooperative Extension recommends one cardboard layer (or three to four layers of newspaper) soaked before application and pinned or covered with 1–2 inches of organic mulch.
- Clear tall weeds and seed heads so they do not push through seams.
- Lay the wet sheets with overlapping edges.
- Keep cardboard several inches away from vegetable stems and crowns; a tight collar can hold moisture against the plant and restrict gas exchange.
- Cover with organic mulch or topsoil to hold the sheet down and hide exposed edges.
- Check after the next irrigation or rainfall that water has penetrated the layer rather than running off.
Texas A&M AgriLife’s April 2026 guidance gives a similar method: use flattened plain brown corrugated cardboard, overlap the edges, soak it and cover it with about 3 inches of mulch. It specifically advises against heavily colored or slick printed boxes and says to remove tape, labels and staples.
How thick should the layer be?
More cardboard is not automatically safer or more effective. A single wet layer usually blocks light while allowing better air and water exchange than a thick stack. Two layers can help over vigorous turf or persistent weeds, but inspect the bed rather than adding layers indefinitely.

- One layer: Preferred for routine weed suppression in an established garden.
- One to two layers: Commonly recommended for smothering lawn or dense vegetation.
- Covering material: About 1–2 inches of organic mulch in Virginia guidance; about 3 inches in Texas A&M guidance; 2–4 inches of compost for the Maryland raised-bed method.
Excess sheet mulch can impede air and water movement. If soil beneath the cardboard stays saturated, plants wilt despite wet weather, or irrigation pools on top, open or remove the sheet and correct the problem.
When should you remove or break up the cardboard?
Timing depends on what is growing beneath it and whether the sheet is interfering with cultivation.
| Situation | Published guidance | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| Vegetation beneath a raised bed | Maryland Extension: about 8–12 weeks for vegetation to die | Leave it to decompose in place if drainage and root growth remain unrestricted |
| Lawn smothering before bed construction | Iowa State: several months may be needed | Break up or remove remaining sheets after the turf is dead if they obstruct air or water |
| Cardboard used among vegetable rows | Iowa State: biodegradable paper typically breaks down in one growing season | Till in during fall or the following spring only after it has softened and no longer forms a barrier |
| General decomposition estimate | Clemson Extension: approximately four to six months in the context discussed | Use the sheet’s condition and soil function as the test rather than a fixed calendar date |
Do not till intact, tape-studded or coated cardboard into the bed. Remove foreign materials first, and break up only softened paper that is no longer preventing water infiltration.

Cardboard that dries out can become slow to wet. After watering, lift a corner or probe beneath the sheet. If the soil is dry while the top is wet, add more organic cover, rewet the cardboard slowly or remove it where crops need immediate water.

Protect gas exchange
Roots need oxygen, and soil organisms need exchange of gases at the surface. Keep layers thin, avoid sealing the entire bed with impermeable material, and leave breathing room around stems. Virginia guidance specifically warns against restricting soil gas exchange.
Watch for pests and disease-friendly conditions
Cardboard itself is not a pesticide. A continuously wet, compressed layer can create hiding places for slugs and can keep plant crowns damp. Keep mulch and cardboard off stems, improve drainage and inspect underneath if seedlings are chewed or crowns remain wet.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is known about chemicals and PFAS?
There is no universal certification that every cardboard box is chemically safe for every crop and soil. Clemson Extension says it does not know whether enough research has examined long-term effects across soil types. That is a limit on the evidence, not proof that ordinary cardboard is dangerous.
University of Maine Cooperative Extension’s June 2024 garden-news guidance says plain corrugated cardboard generally is not water- or grease-resistant and therefore likely contains less PFAS than treated food-contact papers. The same guidance says more research on vegetable crops is needed. “Likely contains less” is not the same as “contains none,” so avoid waxed or grease-resistant board and do not make zero-risk claims.

Cardboard compared with other weed mulches
Cardboard is convenient because shipping boxes are widely available, but it is not the only option. Iowa State lists straw, grass clippings, shredded leaves and other organic mulches for vegetable gardens. Illinois Extension notes that purpose-made garden paper is sold in large rolls through fruit and vegetable suppliers.
| Option | Best use | Key consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Plain cardboard | Smothering lawn or short-term weed suppression | Must be screened, wetted and eventually broken down or removed |
| Garden paper roll | Large, planned sheet-mulch areas | Designed for garden use; availability is noted by Illinois Extension |
| Straw | Surface mulch around established vegetables | Does not usually kill established turf by itself |
| Shredded leaves | Organic surface cover and moisture conservation | Apply loosely so the layer does not mat and shed water |
| Grass clippings | Thin mulch applications during the growing season | Use clean clippings and avoid thick, airless mats |
The cited extension services do not establish a controlled ranking of all these materials. Select according to the job, the material’s cleanliness and whether you need an immediate light barrier or a breathable surface mulch.

- Leaving tape or labels in place: Peel them off before installation; retrieve visible fragments later rather than tilling them in.
- Using glossy or waxed boxes: Remove them and substitute plain corrugated board.
- Covering a bed with a thick, dry stack: Reduce to one or two layers, soak thoroughly and add a breathable organic cover.
- Placing cardboard directly against stems: Pull it back to leave a clear ring around each plant.
- Assuming a calendar date guarantees decomposition: Check whether the sheet is soft and permeable; moisture and climate change the timeline.
- Planting through an intact barrier: For direct-sown crops, remove or cut openings large enough for roots and water, and do not let the sheet form a sealed floor.
- Using cardboard to address polluted soil: Test the soil and use uncontaminated raised-bed mix or containers when professional guidance calls for it.
A practical decision checklist
Before using a box in a vegetable bed, confirm all of the following:
- It is plain, uncoated corrugated cardboard.
- Tape, labels, staples, plastic and foam are removed.
- No oily, chemical or food residue remains.
- Questionable heavy-box seams have been cut away.
- The layer will be one sheet, or at most two where turf requires it.
- The sheets will be soaked and overlapped.
- Organic mulch or compost will hold them down.
- Water can reach the soil and air can exchange through the bed.
- You have a plan to break up or remove the sheet when it becomes a barrier.
Used this way, cardboard is a practical temporary tool for establishing beds and suppressing weeds. It is not a guarantee of contaminant-free soil, and careful material selection and monitoring matter as much as the sheet itself.
