Verdict: The iRobot Roomba Combo j7+ remains one of the most carpet-friendly hybrid robot vacuums because its mop lifts completely onto the robot when it detects rugs. It vacuums well on hard floors, navigates clutter intelligently, and empties dry debris automatically. However, its mop is for light maintenance rather than deep scrubbing, and you still have to refill the tank and wash the pad. In 2026, it makes the most sense at a substantial discount—not as a full-price alternative to newer robots with self-washing docks.
What is the Roomba Combo j7+?
The Roomba Combo j7+ is a two-in-one robot vacuum and mop introduced in September 2022. It combines room mapping, camera-based obstacle avoidance, vacuuming and mopping on hard floors, and a Clean Base dock that automatically empties the robot’s dry dirt bin.

Do not confuse these models:
- Roomba j7 and j7+: vacuum-only models.
- Roomba Combo j7 and Combo j7+: vacuum-and-mop models.
- The “+” designation: indicates the version supplied with the automatic dirt-disposal dock. It does not mean substantially stronger suction. Independent testing describes the j7 and j7+ vacuum units as mechanically equivalent apart from the dock. See RTINGS’ comparison.
The Combo j7+ is also different from the later Combo j9+, Combo 10 Max, Roomba Plus 405 and other newer Roomba models. Its product page and compatible replacement parts remain available, but iRobot’s current U.S. Combo shop emphasizes newer products rather than prominently listing the j7+ as a current in-stock model. That is a market-status caveat, not proof that support has ended.

Some areas of the home need a deeper clean–pawprints in the mudroom, spills under the kitchen table, tiles in your bathroom. Simply enable SmartScrub and your Roomba Combo j7 plus will scrub back-and-forth, just like you would. *Compared to standard vacuum and mop mode for coffee and grime.
- AUTOMATICALLY EMPTIES ITS BIN ON ITS OWN FOR UP TO 60 DAYS - You can forget about vacuuming for months because it empties itself into the Clean Base Automatic Dirt Disposal with enclosed bags. Dust stays out of sight and your hands stay clean.
The retractable mop is still its biggest advantage
Most hybrid robots lift a mop pad slightly or ask you to create carpet no-go zones. The Combo j7+ takes a different approach: when it detects a rug or carpet, two arms raise the wet mop pad completely onto the top of the robot. The robot can then vacuum carpet without dragging a damp pad across it.
On hard floors, it can vacuum and mop during the same mission. In a mixed-floor home, that means you do not necessarily have to swap a mop attachment or schedule separate vacuum-only and mop-only runs. iRobot presented this design as a major innovation at launch; its launch announcement explains the lifting mechanism and related iRobot OS features.
It is designed to keep carpets dry, and testing generally found the system effective. But “designed to” is important. Correct floor recognition, an accurate map and a reliable physical transition are still required. Unusual rugs, dark flooring, tassels, thresholds and complicated room boundaries deserve supervised testing during the first few runs. No camera-based floor-recognition system should be treated as infallible.

Hard floors
The Combo j7+ is a capable everyday vacuum on sealed hard flooring. Its rubber brushes collect dust, crumbs and ordinary household debris, while the side brush helps reach edges. It is particularly useful for frequent cleaning, when the robot can prevent small amounts of dirt from accumulating.
Pet owners should expect regular hair maintenance rather than a completely hands-off experience. Hair can collect around the rollers, filter and caster wheel even though the Clean Base reduces how often you empty the dust bin.
Low-pile carpet
Carpet performance is more mixed. Independent testing of the mechanically related j7/j7+ platform found weaker results than some older models on certain low-pile carpet and bare-floor tests. That does not make the Combo j7+ ineffective, but buyers with demanding carpet-cleaning requirements should not assume that its premium price guarantees class-leading pickup.
High-pile carpet and embedded pet hair
It can handle loose pet hair reasonably well, but hair embedded deeper in thick carpet is more difficult. Homes dominated by high-pile carpet may be better served by a robot chosen primarily for carpet agitation and pickup rather than one chosen for its hybrid-floor design.

Does it mop well?
Good for routine maintenance
The mop is useful when “mopping” means frequent light cleaning. The robot dampens a washable pad and drags it across sealed hard flooring, applying adjustable quantities of cleaning solution through the app. It can remove light dust, footprints and everyday film, leaving floors visibly cleaner and often shinier.
That is a legitimate benefit. Calling the mop useless would be inaccurate. The better description is maintenance mopping.
Not a deep-scrubbing floor washer
The single passive pad is not designed to replace manual scrubbing or the rotating-pad and roller systems found on newer premium floor-washing robots. Dried-on food, sticky spills and old stains may need pre-treatment or a conventional mop.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchIndependent reviews have also observed that:
- The pad can take several minutes to become evenly damp.
- A full tank can occasionally produce drip marks.
- The dock does not wash or dry the dirty pad.
- The owner must refill the clean-water tank and remove and clean the pad.
So the Combo j7+ can vacuum and mop, but it is not a self-cleaning mop station. That distinction is central to deciding whether it is still worth buying.

- A DEEPER CLEAN—EVEN WHERE DIRT LOVES TO HIDE. With advanced DualClean Mop Pads and PerfectEdge technology the Roomba Plus 505X reaches deeper into corners and along walls, covering 18% more floor area* so spills, crumbs, and sticky spots don’t get left behind. * Compared to standard vacuum & mop mode on coffee and grime.
- THE DOCK THAT HANDLES THE DIRTY WORK. The AutoWash Dock empties debris for up to 75 days and washes, refreshes, and heat‑dries mop pads—so you enjoy up to 4 weeks of hands‑free mopping* with consistently fresh results.
- POWERFUL ENOUGH FOR REAL‑LIFE MESSES. From scattered cereal to muddy pawprints, enjoy confident cleaning with up to 70× stronger suction* paired with dual mop pads, a multi‑surface rubber brush, and edge‑sweeping brush. * As compared to Roomba 600 series robots.
- AVOIDS CORDS, SOCKS—EVEN PET ACCIDENTS. PrecisionVision AI instantly recognizes common household obstacles and steers around them. It also detects wet and dry messes ahead and automatically makes extra passes for a noticeably cleaner result.
- SMARTER NAVIGATION, FEWER WORRIES. ClearView Pro LiDAR maps your home precisely and cleans efficiently day or night, while built‑in cliff sensors help prevent falls near stairs and ledges.
Obstacle avoidance and navigation
The robot uses a front-facing camera and light-based PrecisionVision system to identify and avoid objects. It can recognize or avoid common hazards such as cords, shoes, socks, toys and solid pet waste. The app can display captured obstacle images and let you classify or manage some of them. You can also clean selected rooms or areas around identified objects.
This is one of the Combo j7+’s strongest features for homes with pets, children or clutter. It reduces the need to clear every small object before a run, but it does not eliminate preparation.
Recognition is not perfect. Small toys, dangling wires, curtains and unusual objects can still cause problems, especially in poor lighting or in situations unlike the system’s training examples. Avoidance can also leave a wider uncleaned margin around an object. That is a sensible trade-off when the alternative is swallowing a cable or spreading pet waste, but it means maximum floor coverage may require removing clutter and running a follow-up clean.
Independent observations from TechRadar and Stuff support a practical conclusion: the avoidance system is genuinely useful, but it is not a guarantee that the robot will never get tangled or miss every hazard.
Mapping, app controls and automation
Imprint Smart Mapping lets the robot learn the layout of your home, label rooms and clean selected areas. Once mapping is established, you can assign room-specific preferences, including vacuum-only rooms and rooms where the robot should vacuum and mop.
It supports scheduling, targeted room cleaning and voice-assistant control through Alexa and Google Assistant where supported. iRobot OS updates can add or refine features, but app labels, integrations and availability vary by country, account, platform and software version. Confirm the current options in the iRobot Home app rather than relying on an old review.
For best results, complete an initial mapping run with clutter removed. Then check carpet boundaries, room labels and transitions before enabling unattended mop schedules.

Use the regional owner’s guide for the exact procedure and replacement intervals: Roomba Combo j7+ manual.
Cleaning solution
The manual says to use iRobot Hard Floor Cleaning Solution and not bleach, vinegar, detergent, essential oils or other unapproved chemicals. For the full-size tank, it specifies adding the solution before water and using three capfuls. Instructions and approved products can vary by market and edition, so follow the manual for your region.

Common problems and practical checks
“It never mops.”
Check that the job is set to vacuum-and-mop, the pad is correctly attached, the tank is seated and filled, and the water-flow setting is above minimum. A newly fitted pad may need time to become evenly damp. If the tank, pad shelf or fluid path is dirty, clean it according to the manual. Restarting the robot and app may help with a software or settings issue. Repeated failure suggests a support or hardware problem rather than normal behavior.
“It wets a rug.”
Pause the robot and remove it from the rug. Check whether the mop arm retracted, whether the map shows the transition correctly and whether the camera and sensors are clean. If the issue repeats, improve the map or add an appropriate no-go or no-mop boundary. Contact iRobot if the arm consistently fails to deploy or retract.
“It leaves wet marks.”
Occasional drip marks can occur, particularly with a full tank. Check the tank, pad seating and flow setting, and inspect the first runs rather than assuming every floor type will behave identically.
“It misses dirt around toys and cords.”
That is often the cost of obstacle avoidance. Remove clutter for a coverage-focused run, or schedule targeted follow-up cleaning after the hazards are cleared.
“It gets stuck on rugs.”
Investigate rug thickness, tassels, thresholds, map accuracy and whether the mop arm is moving correctly. Unusual transitions are precisely where supervised initial runs are most valuable.
Roomba Combo j7+ versus newer alternatives
Newer premium robots increasingly combine vacuuming with docks that empty debris, refill water, wash mop pads and dry them. That makes them substantially more autonomous for homes that mop often. The Combo 10 Max, for example, offers a newer premium platform with automatic mop washing and drying; iRobot’s current U.S. Combo catalog also includes the Roomba Plus 405 with an AutoWash dock.
The trade-off is price and design priorities. A newer self-washing model may be better for mostly hard-floor homes with frequent spills, while the Combo j7+ remains compelling for mixed flooring where carpet safety and proven camera-based obstacle avoidance matter more than unattended mop hygiene.
The lower-cost Roomba 105 Combo is a different proposition: it can provide basic vacuum-and-mop functionality at a lower promotional price, but it is not a direct substitute for the j7+’s Clean Base, mapping experience and retractable top-mounted mop.
Who should buy the Combo j7+?
Buy or keep it if:
- Your home combines hard floors with rugs or carpet.
- Avoiding wet carpet is more important than deep stain removal.
- Cords, toys or pet waste are recurring hazards.
- You value room mapping and iRobot’s established app ecosystem.
- Light, frequent mopping is enough.
- You want automatic dry-dirt disposal but accept manual mop care.
- You find a discounted, complete unit with the Clean Base and credible warranty.
Skip it if:
- Your priority is scrubbing dried or sticky stains.
- You want the dock to wash and dry mop pads and manage clean and dirty water.
- Your home is mostly hard flooring and needs serious mopping.
- You have thick carpet and demanding embedded-hair cleanup needs.
- The j7+ costs close to a newer self-washing robot.
- You do not want to wash pads, refill water or clean brushes, filters and sensors.
Final verdict
The Roomba Combo j7+ is an excellent concept with a still-useful execution. Its retractable mop solves the hybrid-robot problem that matters most to mixed-floor homes: a wet pad does not normally trail across carpet. Its obstacle avoidance and mapping are also meaningful advantages for busy, pet-owning households.
But it is not a floor-washing system in the modern sense. The mop handles frequent light cleaning, not serious scrubbing, and the owner remains responsible for water, pads and wet-side maintenance. Since newer Roombas now offer more automated mop care, the Combo j7+ is no longer the obvious premium choice. Buy it when the price reflects its age and the carpet-safe design matches your priorities; otherwise, choose a newer self-washing model or a cheaper basic hybrid robot.
