Inside Crawick Multiverse: Scotland’s Stonehenge-Like Coal-Mine Reclamation

Crawick Multiverse is a modern landscape-art project built on a 55-acre former coal mine near Sanquhar, Scotland. Landscape artist Charles Jencks reshaped mine spoil and other material already on the site into cosmic earthworks, paths, lagoons, a lookout and an amphitheater. The result is sometimes compared with Stonehenge because it uses monumental landforms and stones, but it is neither ancient nor a stone circle: it is a 21st-century reclamation project designed to turn a damaged industrial landscape into a public cultural place.

What Crawick Multiverse is—and what “post-industrial Stonehenge” means

The phrase “post-industrial Stonehenge” describes an analogy, not the project’s name or origin. Crawick Multiverse was commissioned as a new landscape, not discovered as an archaeological monument. Its forms use astronomy as a design language: the sun, galaxies, comets and the idea of a multiverse are translated into earthworks and routes across a former mine.

The American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) described the project in an article published July 20, 2015. That account says the site covered 55 acres, cost $1 million and opened on July 10, 2015, with music and dance. Those figures belong to the 2015 report and should be read as reported project data, not as a current construction budget, area survey or operating update.

Richard Scott, the Duke of Buccleuch, commissioned Jencks after local residents urged him to create something that could benefit a region facing economic difficulty. The commission therefore joined three goals: reclaiming a disturbed mine, creating a destination for residents and visitors, and giving the landscape a legible cultural identity rather than erasing its industrial history.

Why the reclamation strategy matters to construction professionals

Conventional mine restoration often aims to make a site appear natural again by grading spoil, covering it with soil and returning it to pasture or another planned land use. Crawick Multiverse took a different route. ASLA presents the project as an alternative to simply flattening the former mine: retain and reorganize the material, then make the resulting landform useful as a public landscape.

That distinction changes the construction brief. Instead of treating spoil, exposed rock and irregular ground solely as liabilities, the design treats them as structural and visual resources. The project’s earthworks are not decorative objects placed on an otherwise finished park; the shaped ground is the park. Paths, overlooks, water features and gathering areas are coordinated with the contours.

Reusing material already present also reduced construction costs, according to ASLA’s account. The article says about 2,000 boulders that had been partly buried were used in the works. No independent quantity survey, carbon assessment or long-term maintenance study is supplied, so the reported saving should not be generalized into a guaranteed result for every mine-reclamation project. Site testing, contamination controls, slope stability and water management would still govern any real project.

How the landscape is organized

Jencks’ plan is experienced as a sequence of routes and landforms rather than as one object viewed from a single point. ASLA describes paths passing through four ecosystems—grassland, mountain, water gorge and desert. In the context of a former coal mine, those labels function as designed spatial characters: changes in surface, planting, enclosure and elevation help visitors read each zone as a different environment.

The solar-eclipse amphitheater

At the center is an amphitheater inspired by a solar eclipse. ASLA gives its capacity as 5,000 people. The eclipse reference makes the bowl both a performance venue and a diagram in the larger astronomical concept. For construction planning, the important point is that a large public assembly space was formed as part of the landform, not added as a conventional building. Any present-day event capacity, safety arrangement or accessibility provision is not established by the 2015 account.

Andromeda and the Milky Way

Two galaxy mounds anchor the site. The article names them Andromeda and the Milky Way and reports their heights as 25 metres and 15 metres, respectively. Lagoons are associated with the mounds, adding water to the cosmic imagery and creating a contrasting horizontal element beside the rising earthworks.

The height figures are the dimensions reported by ASLA in 2015; they are not a current topographic survey. On a construction drawing, mound height would need a defined datum, finished profile, settlement allowance and drainage strategy. The article does not provide those technical details, so they should not be inferred from the reported numbers.

The Comet Walk and Belvedere

The Comet Walk follows a ridge surfaced with white-yellow sandstone intended to evoke comet tails. It leads to the Belvedere, a lookout over the surrounding countryside. This route demonstrates how imported visual meaning can be achieved with a narrow material palette: a ridge supplies the trajectory, contrasting stone supplies the comet-tail effect, and the lookout supplies the change from immersion in the landform to a broad view.

The North Star hand

Stones from the site were arranged into a hand with one finger pointing toward the North Star. It is a small-scale, readable gesture within a large earthwork scheme. Reusing site stones for a symbolic marker also reinforces the project’s central idea that industrial remnants can become cultural material instead of being removed and discarded.

Materials and earthwork logic

The project’s material story begins with what the mine had already left behind. ASLA says Jencks designed the earthworks and paths using materials found on site, including boulders. The reported 2,000 boulders had been partly buried before being incorporated into the landscape. In practical terms, that approach can reduce import and disposal movements, preserve a visual connection to place and give excavation a second function as construction feedstock.

Material reuse does not remove engineering obligations. A construction team adapting this principle would need to establish whether spoil is chemically suitable, classify rock by size and durability, verify bearing capacity, control erosion and design safe interfaces between steep slopes, water and public routes. The Crawick account explains the artistic rationale but does not publish geotechnical specifications, remediation records, quantities by material type or maintenance costs.

The paths and landforms also show why reclamation at landscape scale requires coordination between civil, environmental and public-realm disciplines. Grading determines views and accessibility; drainage protects slopes and lagoons; planting stabilizes and differentiates the four ecosystem zones; stone placement carries both structural and interpretive roles. The project should therefore be read as an integrated landform commission rather than a sequence of unrelated features.

How the project was intended to serve the region

The commission emerged from a local request, according to ASLA: residents encouraged the landowner to pursue a project that could help a struggling area. That origin matters because the design was not presented merely as private beautification or mitigation. It was intended to create a dynamic place that local people could use in new ways, with events, walking routes, views and symbolic landmarks all contributing to a public identity.

Jencks summarized that ambition in statements quoted by ASLA. In an interview with Fast Company, he said, “We wanted to build something positive for the community instead.” In a project video, he said, “Destroyed sites are an opportunity to renew.” He also stated, “All successful parks have to embed themselves with the locals who will use them in new ways.” These are design principles and intentions, not measured evidence of visitor numbers, job creation or regional economic growth.

ASLA’s article does not provide an independent impact evaluation. It does not establish how many people visit, whether local businesses benefited, or whether the project’s operating model has remained unchanged. A responsible account can describe the community rationale without claiming proven economic outcomes.

Two ways to reclaim a former mine

The clearest way to understand Crawick Multiverse is to compare its stated approach with a conventional pasture-restoration objective. Neither method is automatically correct; the choice depends on contamination, stability, hydrology, land ownership, community needs and the intended end use.

Decision area Flatten and restore pasture Retain and rework material as public landscape
Primary outcome A more uniform landform supporting agricultural or ecological after-use. A legible destination with designed hills, routes, gathering spaces and viewpoints.
Use of spoil and rock Usually graded, capped, relocated or removed to meet the restoration profile. Selected on-site material becomes part of the finished earthworks and stone features.
Design language Naturalistic or agricultural appearance. Explicit astronomical forms, including galaxy mounds, comet imagery and a North Star marker.
Public experience Often centered on habitat, grazing or passive open space. Routes, an amphitheater, a lookout and symbolic landmarks support cultural use.
Evidence available for Crawick Presented by ASLA as the contrasting option of flattening and returning the mine to pasture. Documented as the selected concept; broad economic superiority is not demonstrated.

This comparison is a decision framework, not a claim that one approach works at every mine. A site with hazardous residues or unstable spoil may require removal or containment before any artistic treatment. Conversely, where material is safe and stable, retaining it can preserve local identity while avoiding some import and disposal.

A construction-oriented checklist for similar projects

Crawick Multiverse does not publish a build manual, but its described strategy suggests questions a project team should answer before adopting a reuse-led reclamation brief:

  • Define the end use. Decide whether the finished site is pasture, habitat, public park, event venue or a combination. Each use sets different load, access and maintenance requirements.
  • Characterize the ground. Test spoil and rock for contamination, strength, settlement and weathering. Artistic value cannot override public-safety criteria.
  • Map material before moving it. Record where boulders, sandstone and suitable fill occur so haul routes and stockpiles can be planned around reuse.
  • Design water first. Mounds, lagoons and ravines alter runoff. Provide drainage, erosion control, overflow routes and inspection access before final grading.
  • Coordinate movement and meaning. Align paths, slopes, views and symbolic features so visitors understand the sequence without compromising gradients or emergency access.
  • Plan for settlement and maintenance. Earthworks change over time. Specify inspections, vegetation management, surface repairs and monitoring of retaining or water features.
  • Build local ownership. Consult residents early about routes, events, quiet areas and interpretation. Jencks’ comments make local use a design requirement, not an afterthought.
  • Measure outcomes honestly. Track safety, ecological performance, attendance and local benefits separately. A compelling opening story is not a substitute for post-completion evidence.

What is known—and not known—about visiting now

The documented opening was in 2015, and the source describes the intended layout at that time. It does not establish current opening hours, admission fees, parking, toilets, accessibility conditions, event schedules, path surfaces or the present condition of the earthworks. Anyone planning a visit should verify those details with an authoritative current operator or local authority rather than relying on the historical opening account.

The same qualification applies to the physical features. The reported mound heights, boulder count and amphitheater capacity describe the project as ASLA presented it in 2015. Weather, settlement, repairs, planting changes or altered management may affect how the site appears today, but no current inspection is documented here.

Why Crawick Multiverse remains a useful reclamation case study

Crawick Multiverse demonstrates a specific proposition: a damaged industrial site can be renewed by making its existing landform and materials the basis of a new public landscape. Its value as a case study lies in the integration of engineering-scale earthmoving with cultural storytelling. The former mine is not hidden beneath a generic green finish; its transformation is made visible through mounds, ridges, stone arrangements, water and routes.

That proposition has limits. The 2015 account supports the project’s design description, reported cost and dimensions, and the community rationale behind the commission. It does not prove that every mine can be reclaimed this way, that the approach always costs less, or that Crawick produced measured regional economic gains. For construction and regeneration teams, the durable lesson is methodological: start with a safe, technically understood site; reuse suitable material where it genuinely works; give the landform a coherent public purpose; and evaluate results after opening instead of assuming that an ambitious design guarantees them.
