Matter and Thread are reducing ecosystem dependence, mobile wallets and biometrics are expanding credential choices, and multifamily operators are connecting locks to property-management systems. Yet installation fit, battery resilience, offline access, privacy, and long-term software support still matter more than a long feature list.
How large is the smart-lock market?
Published forecasts disagree because “smart lock” can mean a residential electronic lock, a commercial access-control product, credential software, or some combination. Future Market Insights estimates a global market of $3.5 billion in 2026, reaching $9.4 billion by 2036 at an 11.6% CAGR (Future Market Insights). Grand View Research forecasts $4.0 billion in 2026 and $14.3 billion by 2033 (Grand View Research). Fortune Business Insights projects $4.22 billion in 2026 and $17.75 billion by 2034 (Fortune Business Insights).

These are competing estimates, not a settled market total. The defensible conclusion is directional: connected access is a high-growth category, driven by residential retrofits, builders, multifamily housing, hospitality, and access-management software. Remote access, activity notifications, temporary credentials, geofencing and ecosystem integration are repeatedly identified as demand drivers (Meticulous Research).
What counts as a smart lock?
A smart lock is an electronic lock that accepts one or more digitally managed credentials. Those may include a phone app, PIN, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Zigbee, Z-Wave, Matter over Thread or Wi-Fi, NFC or a mobile-wallet key, fingerprint, palm recognition, temporary code or recurring guest credential. Some electronic locks work only locally; not every smart lock offers internet-based remote unlocking.

Why demand is increasing
- Phone-based authentication is familiar to consumers.
- Temporary access helps guests, cleaners, contractors, caregivers and short-term-rental operators.
- Locks can connect with cameras, alarms, lighting and property-management platforms.
- Retrofit products reduce installation risk and are attractive to renters.
- Builders and multifamily owners increasingly use connected access as an amenity.
- Mobile-wallet credentials make digital keys easier to understand.
- Matter can reduce platform fragmentation, although it does not eliminate it.
Smart locks usually sell convenience, access management and visibility rather than guaranteed resistance to forced entry. A connected lock cannot compensate for a weak door, poor strike-plate installation or an insecure account.
Technologies reshaping the category
Matter and Thread
Matter provides a common application layer for participating ecosystems, while Thread is a low-power mesh network suited to battery devices. Together they can reduce platform lock-in and lower standby-power demands compared with Wi-Fi-only designs. A Matter-over-Thread lock normally still needs a compatible Matter controller and Thread border router. Feature exposure, setup, remote access and firmware updates can remain manufacturer- or platform-specific. Matter also cannot fix mechanical misalignment or a weak motor.
Yale’s Matter lock was reported at a $189.99 launch price in June 2025, and Schlage introduced the Matter-over-Thread Sense Pro at CES 2025; both figures are historical launch signals, not universal current prices (Meticulous Research).

Ultra-wideband hands-free entry
UWB can provide more precise distance and directional information than ordinary Bluetooth. Aqara’s U400 was described as distinguishing an approach to the door from simply passing by and determining which side of the door the user occupies; it also supports fingerprints, passcodes, NFC, app control and Apple Home Key (TechRadar). UWB requires compatible phones, watches, lock hardware and software, so it is not a universal feature.
Biometric credentials
Fingerprint and palm readers can help children, older adults, workers and anyone who does not want to carry a phone. Reliability can fall with wet, dirty, gloved or injured fingers. Biometric templates create privacy and security obligations, and a reader still needs a backup credential.
Battery and energy improvements
Manufacturers are exploring rechargeable packs, solar-assisted charging, wireless charging, lower-power Thread radios, battery alerts and external emergency power. CES 2026 coverage highlighted solar-assisted designs from Desloc and wireless charging in Lockin’s V7 Max; availability and pricing varied by product, so these are emerging directions rather than category standards (TechRadar).
Retrofit installation
Retrofit locks preserve exterior hardware, reduce drilling and can be removed at move-out. They are particularly useful where a landlord requires the original cylinder to remain. The trade-off is a bulkier interior mechanism and dependence on a smooth, correctly aligned existing thumb-turn. August and SwitchBot are prominent retrofit examples (TechRadar).

What consumers actually value
Convenience is usually the first purchase trigger: no physical key, remote guest access, temporary codes, lock notifications and automatic locking. But many households prefer a keypad or physical key over hands-free entry because those options are easier to understand and less dependent on phones or cloud services.
NIST cites an estimate that 45% of U.S. internet households had at least one smart-home device in 2024 and 18% had six or more; this is not a smart-lock adoption rate (NIST). A July 2026 Horowitz summary said four in ten U.S. consumers owned smart-home devices and grouped doorbells, cameras and locks among widely adopted categories, so it cannot establish lock penetration by itself (Horowitz Research).
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAmong homeowners without smart-home products, Nationwide reported that 53% felt they did not need them, 41% cited cost, 30% lack of knowledge, 20% cybersecurity, 20% data collection and 13% installation difficulty. These are broad smart-home findings, not lock-specific results (Nationwide). NIST’s survey of 401 U.S. users found security and privacy perceptions differed by device category, showing why consumers should evaluate a lock’s data practices rather than rely on a generic “smart-home security” label (NIST).

How to evaluate a smart lock
Choose replacement or retrofit
- Replacement: best when the existing deadbolt is worn, misaligned or due for a complete upgrade.
- Retrofit: best for renters, preserved exterior hardware and reversible installation.
Confirm door thickness, backset, cylinder type, swing, strike alignment and interior clearance before ordering.
Match the connection to the job
| Connection | Advantages | Limitations |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi | Direct remote access in some models | Higher battery demand and network dependence |
| Thread | Low-power mesh and strong Matter fit | Needs a compatible controller and border router |
| Bluetooth | Low energy and useful local phone access | Usually needs a bridge for remote control |
| Z-Wave or Zigbee | Mature automation ecosystems | Requires a compatible hub |
| Cellular or commercial gateway | Useful for managed properties | Higher cost and often service-dependent |
Test authentication and offline behavior
- Can keypad codes work without internet?
- Are codes temporary, recurring and revocable?
- Does the lock retain local credentials during an outage?
- Is there a physical key, emergency battery contact or other external power method?
- Are low-battery warnings timely, and does cold weather affect the cells?
- Can auto-unlock be disabled?
Assess privacy and lifecycle support
Ask where access logs are stored, who can view them, how long they remain available, whether two-factor authentication is offered, how accounts are recovered, whether firmware is signed and updated, and what remains functional if cloud support ends. For rentals, confirm who owns the logs and controls credentials.
Buying paths by situation
- Homeowner replacing a deadbolt: prioritize mechanical fit, keypad reliability, physical-key fallback and local operation before wallet or UWB features.
- Renter: choose a reversible retrofit, retain the existing key where possible, and obtain written permission if required.
- Apple household: verify the exact model’s Apple Home Key support; Matter alone does not imply Home Key.
- Mixed-platform household: prefer documented Matter support, then check which features each ecosystem actually exposes.
- Multifamily operator: evaluate credential provisioning, revocation, audit trails, resident turnover and property-management integration.
- Biometric buyer: test enrollment and failure recovery for every intended user and maintain a non-biometric fallback.
- Subscription-averse buyer: confirm that keypad, key, NFC or Bluetooth access remains usable without a paid cloud tier.
Failure modes the market still has to solve
Battery and alignment failures
A dead battery, inaccessible emergency contacts or a backup key left indoors can prevent entry. A rubbing deadbolt can also drain batteries and cause motor failures; that is an installation problem, not necessarily an electronics defect.

Outages and cloud dependence
Local keypad, NFC or Bluetooth access may continue during an internet outage, while remote control fails. Exact behavior is product-specific. “Matter compatible” does not guarantee remote access without a controller, identical features across Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa and SmartThings, or freedom from a proprietary app.
Best Value
- Passcode Entry: This keypad lock offers 20 access codes for family use and a temporary code for single-use guest entry
- One-Time Code: A one-time PIN code can be set for door opening and will automatically be deleted after use
- Smart Locking: Features an automatic door lock that can be set to lock in 10-99 seconds (off by default) and one-touch auto-lock by pressing and holding any key on the keypad for 2 seconds
- Long Battery Life & Low Battery Indicator: Powered by 4 AA batteries (not included), lasts up to 365 days. A red light indicator alerts you when battery level drops below 15%
- Security Deadbolt: Provides reliable home protection with its sturdy aluminum alloy construction, weather resistance (IP54), durability, anti-peeping user code protection, low battery indicator, and solid lock cylinder
Credential and physical attacks
Risks include reused passwords, compromised guest accounts, lost phones, exposed PINs, insecure Bluetooth implementations, vulnerable cloud APIs and mechanical bypass. Future Market Insights cites a March 2024 NVD record involving hard-coded credentials and Bluetooth beacon exposure in Chirp Access, illustrating why security claims should be checked against vulnerability records (Future Market Insights).
Product discontinuation
A lock may outlast its app. Before buying, check firmware history, warranty, battery availability, account-transfer procedures and whether local credentials survive a cloud shutdown.
Where the market goes next
- More cross-platform wallet credentials and feature parity.
- Lower-maintenance power systems and clearer battery testing.
- Longer software-support commitments for a physical product expected to last years.
- Better privacy governance for resident and household access logs.
- Clearer security disclosures and certifications.
- More renter-compatible designs and transparent accessory pricing.
The strongest products will combine reliable mechanics, simple installation, flexible credentials, interoperability, local fallback, privacy controls and a credible support lifecycle. The lock with the most authentication methods will not necessarily be the best lock.
