A sauna was proposed for Indiana Tea House in Cottesloe, and the Town of Cottesloe council supported the proposal in March 2025. That did not establish final approval or an opening: the site is on Crown land, and contemporaneous reporting said the Western Australian Planning Commission still had a decision to make. The available records do not confirm whether the sauna has since been approved, installed or opened.
What was proposed for Indiana Tea House?
Fiveight’s application described a portable sauna in former playground space on the south side of the Indiana building. PerthNow reported the application on 20 March 2025 as an additional visitor amenity, separate from the larger redevelopment proposal.
The Town of Cottesloe’s 25 March 2025 agenda records the applicant’s proposed specifications and operating model:
- Approximately 14.4 m² in area and 2.6 m high.
- Capacity for approximately 10 users at a time.
- Commercial operation by qualified staff, with walk-up access and pre-booking proposed seven days a week.
These are applicant-provided plans recorded in the agenda, not measurements of a completed facility or confirmation that it opened. Town of Cottesloe, 25 March 2025 council agenda; PerthNow, 20 March 2025.

Has the Cottesloe sauna been approved?
Town council support was reported on 27 March 2025, but it was not the final planning decision. The council agenda says the Town was not the determining authority; it also records that the applicant could not install and operate the sauna without support for a lease amendment. PerthNow reported that the Western Australian Planning Commission had the final approval role for proposed changes at the Crown-land site.
Those are distinct steps: council support, the relevant lease amendment or land-manager requirements, and the state planning determination. The records and reports cited here establish council support at the time, but do not confirm a later state decision or completion of the other requirements. When will the sauna open?
No opening date is established in the available reporting or council agenda. They do not confirm that the sauna was installed, identify a confirmed operator, or establish that it is currently operating. Treat any opening date or present-tense claim about access as unconfirmed unless supported by a newer official announcement or direct confirmation.
How does the sauna proposal relate to Indiana’s redevelopment?
The sauna application was an additional amenity proposal, while Indiana’s broader redevelopment followed a separate planning path. On 26 June 2024, the Town said it would not proceed with the then-current Tattarang/Fiveight business plan and endorsed parameters for a revised vision. Mayor Lorraine Young said the Town would welcome a revised proposal within those parameters. Fiveight’s portfolio currently labels Indiana “In Planning” and describes a vision that includes a boutique hotel, restaurants, cafés, family-friendly kiosks, a promenade and a covered public plaza. That company description is not confirmation of a specific approval or construction status.

Indiana is an existing landmark, not a proposed new building. Scanlan Architects says its design won a Town of Cottesloe public competition in 1994 and that the building opened in October 1996. The sauna proposal would add a small visitor amenity to the site; it should not be mistaken for confirmation that the much larger redevelopment is proceeding.
