The appeal of Govee Curtain Lights is not that they make a wall brighter; it is that you can turn a wall into a playful, low-resolution canvas for colors, patterns, and animated images. That is the enthusiasm behind BGR’s July 24, 2024 article, “I’m Having Way Too Much Fun Playing With Govee Curtain Lights”. It describes the original model, not every product now sold under the Curtain Lights name. If you are shopping today, the model number matters: the original H70B1, Curtain Lights 2, and Curtain Lights Pro differ in size, features, and expansion compatibility.
What the original Govee Curtain Lights are
The original Curtain Lights are a wide top bar with multiple hanging strands of addressable RGB light beads. Hung against a wall or window, they form a light grid that can show patterns and animated, pixel-like images. BGR described the original display as roughly 5 feet wide by 6.6 feet long, with 520 LEDs. Govee’s U.S. refurbished listing identifies that generation as model H70B1 and also lists 520 LEDs, app control, DIY mode, Music Mode, and DreamView support.

That makes them different from ordinary curtain or string lights. They are decorative lighting, but their distinctive purpose is to make a broad vertical surface behave like a programmable light canvas. The effect is closer to a very low-resolution animation than to a screen.

BGR’s writer emphasized the interaction: choose a scene, sketch something, or try an image or GIF, then see a wall-sized lighting effect rather than a single lamp changing color. That quick loop of making, previewing, and changing a design is the product’s central novelty. It can suit a gaming or streaming backdrop, a party, holiday decor, or a room where animated ambience is more appealing than a fixed color.

Expect stylized results, not faithful video playback. The original article celebrates GIF uploads but does not establish display resolution, supported file formats, upload limits, latency, or image quality. As a practical rule for a sparse light grid, bold shapes and strong color separation are better candidates than detailed photographs, small lettering, subtle gradients, or intricate animation. Logos, icons, silhouettes, fireworks, and simple seasonal motifs are natural experiments; a monitor, projector, or purpose-built LED video wall is the better choice when detail matters.
What the original H70B1 can do
BGR’s 2024 account reports about 90 dynamic scenes, an Enhanced Music Mode, a DIY editor, and the ability to upload images and GIFs. It also says the top strip can be cut to make an installation narrower and mentions placing units side by side. These are claims about the original article’s experience, not guarantees that every later model has identical functions or that every combination of units is compatible. Treat any modification or multi-unit plan as model-specific and check Govee’s instructions before acting.
Govee’s current U.S. refurbished listing for H70B1 separately identifies app control, DIY mode, DreamView, and Music Mode. Its listing showed the refurbished model at $93.49 against a $129.99 reference price when checked for this article, but it was marked sold out. That listing is not evidence of dependable stock.
How to approach the app and custom effects
The broad workflow is straightforward, although Govee’s app labels and screens can change. The official product listings confirm app control and custom-content features, but do not establish a permanent menu path.

- Where the model and app offer them, adjust effect speed, brightness, color, or timing. DreamView can coordinate the original model with compatible Govee lighting.
If music effects disappoint, remember that a music mode is not necessarily a precise synchronization system for every song, speaker, or room. The available documentation here confirms music modes, but does not establish the exact sound-detection method or synchronization performance for each generation.
Measure and plan the installation before buying
Measure the intended wall or window and account for the top bar, hanging strands, controller, adapter, outlet, and route for the power cable. Leave room to reach the controller, and avoid locations where people, pets, doors, chairs, or moving curtains can snag the strands.
Govee’s H70B1 refurbished listing names hooks, adhesive tape, and seamless nails among the installation accessories. Choose a mounting approach suitable for the surface; adhesive can be unreliable on dusty, damp, or textured walls, and the strands should not carry tension. If you are considering cutting the original model’s top strip, BGR says it can be done to narrow the installation, but cutting is irreversible. Do not cut the hanging LED strands, and do not modify the product unless the exact model’s documentation permits the specific cut.

Outdoor placement needs component-level caution
Govee’s H70B1 listing gives IP65 ratings for the curtain lights and control box, and an IP44 rating for the adapter. Those ratings apply to named components; they do not make every connection or the complete installation equally weatherproof. Keep the adapter and vulnerable connections protected from rain and standing water, and follow the placement guidance for the exact model. Outdoor exposure, condensation, temperature, and mounting conditions still matter.

Start with the actual width and height you can cover. The H70B3 Curtain Lights 2 is the smaller current option in the supplied Govee listing, with 520 LEDs over 4.9 by 6.6 feet. The original H70B1 is worth considering only if you find a suitable listing and have confirmed condition, model identity, and compatibility for your intended setup.

Choose based on the visual effect you want, not just a feature count. The original’s GIF and DIY appeal is the point of BGR’s article; Curtain Lights 2 adds listed AI tools and more presets; Pro offers the highest stated per-unit LED count here, a layered DIY canvas, and specified three-set splicing. None should be mistaken for a high-resolution camera-ready screen.

A large wall or window
Compare the Curtain Lights 2 sizes against the measured surface. Govee lists H70B4 and H70B5 at 9.8 and 14.8 feet wide respectively, while Pro’s stated expanded canvas reaches 16.2 feet wide with up to three spliced sets. These are different expansion approaches; do not assume the products can be mixed.
A seasonal outdoor display
Confirm the exact model’s installation and weather guidance before using it outdoors. For H70B1, the listed IP65/IP44 distinction means the adapter and connections require particular care; a rating for the curtain itself is not a blanket promise for a fully exposed setup.
A budget purchase
The refurbished H70B1 listing may appeal if available, but the observed listing was sold out. Compare a specific unit’s model number and condition with a current Curtain Lights 2 offer rather than treating the historical BGR promotion or an old reference price as the going price.
When another kind of lighting is a better fit
- Addressable LED strips: Better suited to outlining shelves, desks, and room edges; not designed to turn a broad wall into a GIF-like light grid.
- Modular light panels: Better for geometric wall compositions, but they do not make the same continuous curtain backdrop.
- Projectors: Better when image size and detail matter more than direct-emitting decorative light and a compact mounting setup.
- LED video panels or pixel displays: Better for fidelity and deliberate animation, with greater expense and setup complexity.
- Standard curtain fairy lights: Simpler decorative lighting, without the programmable imagery and app-driven pixel effects.

- You prefer lighting that needs no app setup or custom-content tinkering.
- You need guaranteed compatibility across generations or expect any two units to splice together.
- You need an outdoor installation where the adapter and all connections can remain exposed.
- You have no safe mounting surface, practical cable route, or suitable place for a wide hanging fixture.
- You require a specific smart-home integration or offline behavior; confirm the exact model’s support rather than inferring it from the product family.
Verdict: a programmable light canvas, not a screen
The fun BGR describes is credible as a description of the product’s appeal: making and swapping animated wall effects is more engaging than selecting one room color. That does not make the original article a long-term reliability or performance review. It does not assess app stability, brightness, energy use, installation difficulty, or image quality under controlled conditions. Buy this kind of light for playful decoration and experimentation; choose a display technology if picture detail is the goal.
