Yes—reports of connection problems with IKEA’s new Matter smart-home devices were real. The most visible failures involved initial pairing, Matter commissioning, devices disappearing after setup, and some products later going offline. IKEA acknowledged setup difficulties and has since released several DIRIGERA firmware updates addressing Matter onboarding, Thread routing, mDNS traffic, and stability. As of the latest release listed publicly—version 2.975.2, dated July 1, 2026—the issue is better described as an improved but configuration-dependent problem, not proof that every IKEA Matter product is defective.
What was going wrong?
IKEA’s new Matter range includes 21 devices across lighting, sensors, plugs, and controls. Products include KAJPLATS bulbs, BILRESA controls, MYGGSPRAY motion sensors, TIMMERFLOTTE environmental sensors, ALPSTUGA air-quality sensors, and GRILLPLATS smart plugs. They do not all use identical hardware or networking requirements, so a problem with one model should not automatically be generalized to the entire range.

- Devices worked initially and later appeared offline.
- Pairing worked in IKEA Home smart but failed when the device was shared with Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, or Home Assistant.
Tom’s Guide reported Reddit users claiming failure rates as high as 50%, but that figure is anecdotal—not an official IKEA statistic or the result of a controlled test. Tom’s Guide’s report also recorded IKEA’s acknowledgment that some customers were having trouble with initial setup.

Is this a hardware defect or a software problem?
The available evidence points strongly to software, interoperability, and network-topology problems being significant contributors. IKEA’s subsequent DIRIGERA releases specifically mention Matter onboarding, Thread routing, IPv6 behavior, mDNS traffic, and stability improvements.
That does not prove every failure was software-related, and it does not rule out an individual faulty device. It does mean the evidence does not support saying that IKEA recalled defective products or that the entire range was broken.
What IKEA has fixed
IKEA’s public release history lists several updates relevant to Matter and Thread:
| DIRIGERA version | Date | Relevant change |
|---|---|---|
| 2.901.5 | February 3, 2026 | Improved Thread-network performance and addressed a rare incorrect Thread-role advertisement. |
| 2.934.0 | March 3, 2026 | Continued improvements to Matter onboarding stability. |
| 2.934.5 | April 24, 2026 | Fixed a Thread IPv6-routing issue that could affect systems with multiple Thread border routers or Matter controllers. |
| 2.975.2 | July 1, 2026 | Added Matter and Thread stability improvements, reduced mDNS network noise, upgraded the Matter Controller to version 1.4.2, and included other performance improvements. |
These notes show that IKEA has been actively addressing the problem, but they are not a guarantee that every combination of device, router, phone, Matter controller, and Thread border router will work without troubleshooting. Check the firmware actually installed on your DIRIGERA hub rather than assuming the latest update has arrived.
For context, DIRIGERA has two different practical roles. It can act as a Matter controller for connecting supported Matter products to IKEA Home smart, and as a Matter bridge that exposes older Zigbee-based IKEA products to Matter ecosystems. The Connectivity Standards Alliance lists DIRIGERA as a certified Matter Bridge; that certification record is separate from IKEA’s internal DIRIGERA firmware numbering.

- 【Matter: All-Round Compatibility】With Matter, users are no longer tied to specific platforms and works with all certified smart home platforms, such as Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Google Home and Samsung SmartThings. You can control all your smart home devices from a single app, reducing the need for multiple apps for different devices.
- 【Matter: Smooth LAN Control】All Matter-certified devices in your local area network (LAN) will work smoothly even when your home internet goes offline. Matter allows effective communication directly between devices, without the need for a specific 'forwarding' device. For example, a Matter smart switch or sensor can turn on/off a Matter bulb directly without being connected to a cloud service, or other specific action. Once configured, communication and control between Matter devices can be achieved directly on the local network.
- 【Matter: Future-Proofing】Matter devices will be compatible with future updates and advancements in technology, ensuring that your smart home system remains up-to-date and compatible with new devices and features.
- 【Compact & Flame Retardant Design】Avoid blocking additional outlets with its compact design, and plug in your WiFi smart plug with confidence thanks to its UL certified flame retardant design and 2-year limited warranty.

Why Matter did not make setup automatic
Matter is an interoperability layer, not a promise that every smart-home setup will be plug-and-play. Several technologies can be involved:
- Matter defines how compatible devices communicate with controllers and ecosystems.
- Thread is a low-power mesh network used by many newer sensors and other devices.
- Bluetooth Low Energy may be used during initial commissioning.
- Wi-Fi and Ethernet connect the phone, router, hub, and local network.
- mDNS and IPv6 help local devices discover and communicate with one another.
- Zigbee remains relevant to older IKEA products connected through the DIRIGERA bridge.
A setup can therefore fail even when the device itself is powered and the QR code is valid. Discovery may be blocked by a guest network, VLAN, client isolation, multicast filtering, an incompatible IPv6 configuration, or competing Thread border routers.

Do you need a DIRIGERA hub?
Not universally. IKEA says its Matter devices can work with other compatible Matter systems. However, DIRIGERA is IKEA’s recommended route because it can combine newer Matter products with older IKEA devices and provide both controller and Thread Border Router functions.
Some products have more specific requirements. New MYGGSPRAY sensors need DIRIGERA or another compatible smart-home hub that functions as a Thread Border Router for app-based operation. KAJPLATS bulbs require a Matter-capable system and Matter hub for app-based smart-home control, although they can also be paired directly with certain IKEA remotes. An older TRÅDFRI gateway is not the same as a compatible Matter and Thread setup.
Buying DIRIGERA can simplify the IKEA experience, but it is not a guaranteed cure for commissioning failures. It also adds another hub for people who already have a fully compatible Matter controller and Thread Border Router.

How to troubleshoot IKEA Matter connection problems
Work through these steps in order. Avoid factory-resetting the hub or every device before checking the simpler causes.
Recommended Free Tools
1. Update every relevant component
- Update the IKEA Home smart app.
- Confirm that DIRIGERA has internet access and is running the latest available firmware.
- Update the app and hub software for Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, or another Matter ecosystem you are using.
IKEA specifically recommends updating the app and DIRIGERA before connecting a Matter product.
2. Check power and the pairing window
- Leave smart bulbs switched on at the wall.
- Install fresh batteries in sensors and remotes.
- Power the product on and begin setup promptly.
IKEA says a product is ready to connect for about 15 minutes after being powered on. If that window expires, press the system button once to reopen it. For bulbs, follow the app’s power-cycle instructions rather than applying a generic reset procedure.
3. Put the phone, product, and hub close together
During first setup, keep the phone, device, and DIRIGERA hub near one another. Matter products can use a different network arrangement from older IKEA products, and proximity helps the initial Bluetooth, Thread, and local-network handoff succeed.
4. Check the local network
- Connect the phone to the same Wi-Fi network as DIRIGERA.
- Do not use guest Wi-Fi during setup.
- Check for client isolation, VLAN separation, multicast filtering, or mesh-node isolation.
- Enable local IPv6 if your router supports it.
IKEA also says that disabling IPv6 on the WAN side may help with some configurations. That is an IKEA troubleshooting recommendation for particular setups, not a universal Matter rule.

5. Temporarily disconnect other Thread border routers
If you have multiple Thread-capable hubs, temporarily power down the others and try pairing with DIRIGERA as the active Thread Border Router. IKEA specifically identifies devices such as a second-generation Google Nest Hub and a second-generation-or-newer Apple TV as examples. After pairing, power the other hubs back on and allow the Thread mesh time to rebuild.
6. Restart the network in the recommended order
- Unplug the Wi-Fi router for 30 seconds, then reconnect it.
- Unplug and reconnect DIRIGERA.
- Restart the phone.
7. Reset only the affected product
Reset the individual device after the steps above. Many IKEA products use a system-button hold of approximately 10 seconds, but the exact procedure varies. Some remotes and sensors use four presses of the system button to enter pairing mode, while IKEA smart bulbs commonly use a six-times power-cycle procedure. Follow the instructions for the exact model; a reset clears previous connection data.
8. Reset the Thread network
Use this only after ordinary pairing and network checks fail. IKEA says a Thread network can become mismatched after repeated failed attempts. Its instructions in the IKEA Home smart app point to hub settings for resetting the Thread network. Devices on that Thread network may then need to be reset and paired again.
9. Factory-reset DIRIGERA last
A DIRIGERA factory reset deletes the hub’s previous information. IKEA’s support instructions say to insert a pin into the reset hole on the underside until the status lights turn off; the center light then blinks red four times when the hub is ready. Use this only when less-destructive troubleshooting has failed and you are prepared to rebuild the setup.
Use the symptom to identify the likely cause
| Symptom | Likely categories | Best first response |
|---|---|---|
| The device never appears | Expired pairing window, incomplete reset, distance, or Thread/Matter discovery failure | Reopen pairing mode, move the device closer, update software, and retry. |
| Matter says setup succeeded, but IKEA says no product was found | Handoff or commissioning failure | Restart the app and hub, reset the product, check same-network access, and update DIRIGERA. |
| It works in IKEA Home smart but not Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, or another platform | Third-party ecosystem or multi-admin issue | Confirm IKEA pairing first, update the other controller, then contact that platform if necessary. |
| Several devices go offline together | Hub firmware, router, mDNS, IPv6, VLAN, or Thread-network issue | Treat it as an infrastructure problem before replacing individual products. |
| Only one unit fails | Product reset state, placement, model firmware, or a defective unit | Reset and test it near the hub; exchange it if it remains the only failure. |
| An older TRÅDFRI gateway is being used | Compatibility limitation | Use DIRIGERA or another compatible Matter/Thread system. |
| The sensor works but settings are missing | Hubless or third-party feature limitations | Use a compatible hub and the app that exposes the required settings. |
Should you buy IKEA’s Matter devices now?
They are a reasonable fit for IKEA customers who already use DIRIGERA, want inexpensive lights or sensors, and are comfortable updating firmware and checking their home network. DIRIGERA is particularly useful if you want newer Matter devices and older IKEA Zigbee products in one system.

They are a weaker fit if you expect a completely frictionless scan-and-go installation, cannot change router settings, or need every advanced feature to appear identically in Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, and Home Assistant.
Before buying, verify the exact model and regional SKU, whether it uses Thread or another connection method, whether a Thread Border Router is required, which features your chosen ecosystem supports, the current firmware path, stock, and the retailer’s return policy. IKEA’s Matter system guide is the best starting point for the current range.
Alternatives include established Zigbee ecosystems, native devices designed primarily for Apple Home, Google Home, or Alexa, other Matter-over-Thread products, and Home Assistant. Each has different costs and setup burdens, and there is not enough product-specific evidence to call any category universally more reliable.

IKEA’s Matter connection problems were legitimate, especially during initial setup and commissioning. Multiple DIRIGERA updates through July 1, 2026 address relevant Matter, Thread, IPv6, mDNS, and stability issues, so launch-era reports should not automatically be treated as a description of every current installation.
The practical question is no longer simply whether IKEA Matter devices are “broken.” It is whether a particular device, controller, firmware version, Thread topology, router, and local network are compatible and up to date. Diagnose those layers before returning hardware; if one device still fails after an individual reset and a near-hub test while comparable devices work, then a defective unit becomes a more plausible explanation.
