IKEA announced 21 Matter-compatible smart-home products on November 6, 2025. The range covers smart bulbs, sensors, remotes and smart plugs. By August 2026, IKEA’s U.S. catalog showed a broader selection, including KAJPLATS bulbs, BILRESA remotes, GRILLPLATS plugs and sensors for motion, doors, leaks, temperature, humidity and air quality.
The important buying detail is that these products use Matter over Thread. Matter does not necessarily mean a phone can connect to them directly: you need a compatible Matter controller and Thread Border Router. IKEA’s DIRIGERA hub is the intended option for IKEA’s app and automations, although compatible hubs from other ecosystems may also work.

What IKEA announced
IKEA’s November 6, 2025 announcement introduced a new smart-home range built around three categories:
PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- Lighting: KAJPLATS smart bulbs in different shapes, brightness levels, sockets, white-spectrum configurations and color-and-white-spectrum versions. IKEA announced 11 KAJPLATS bulb variations.
- Sensors: devices for motion, air quality, temperature and humidity, door and window status, and water-leak detection.
- Control: BILRESA remotes and GRILLPLATS smart plugs.
IKEA described the range as an effort to make smart-home technology more affordable, simpler to install and easier to expand. The announcement included new products as well as updates to familiar smart-home categories. It should be treated as the starting point for a phased rollout, not as a permanent worldwide list of exactly 21 products. IKEA’s announcement also notes that launch timing, availability and prices vary by market.

Matter, Thread and the hub requirement
These terms describe different parts of the system:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Matter is the smart-home interoperability standard. It allows compatible products to be commissioned and controlled across supported ecosystems.
- Thread is the low-power mesh networking technology used by these IKEA devices. It is not the same as Wi-Fi.
- Matter controller is the software and hardware that adds and manages Matter devices.
- Thread Border Router connects the Thread network to the rest of the home network and is required for Matter-over-Thread devices.
Consequently, a phone alone is generally not enough. IKEA’s product information says Matter-over-Thread products need a Thread Border Router, such as DIRIGERA, for phone-based control. A Matter controller that supports only Matter over Wi-Fi or Ethernet may not include the Thread radio required by these devices.

- You can use TRÅDFRI remote to control up to 10 LED light bulbs at a time - dim, switch on and off, choose colors and step by step change from warm to cold light.
- You can use TRÅDFRI gateway and app to create several groups of light sources and control them in different ways.
- The remote control works with TRÅDFRI bulbs.
- With TRÅDFRI remote control you can dim your lights without a hardwired installation.
- A magnet makes it easy to attach the remote control to the wall bracket.
Do you need DIRIGERA?
You do not necessarily need DIRIGERA, but you do need a compatible Matter controller and Thread Border Router.
DIRIGERA is the most straightforward choice for an IKEA-first installation. It supports the IKEA Home smart app, IKEA scenes and automations, and can bring new Matter products together with older IKEA devices. IKEA also describes DIRIGERA as a Matter controller for compatible third-party products.
Alternatively, a supported Apple, Google, Amazon, Samsung or Homey setup may be able to commission the devices directly. The exact result depends on the platform, its Thread hardware and support for the particular Matter device type. Matter compatibility does not guarantee identical features in every app.

- Reliable Long-Range Connections: The Tapo Hub operates on a lower frequency broadband, resulting in fewer signal interferences and ensuring stable connectivity for all your devices throughout your home. With a maximum connection distance of up to 30m, the Tapo Hub outperforms wireless network systems in the 2.4 GHz band. Our internal laboratory tests confirm the coverage and range of the Tapo Hub, but keep in mind that actual results may vary depending on environmental conditions.
- A Low-Power Way to Connect Everything- The Tapo Hub serves as the central hub for your Tapo smart home, linking smart sensors, switches, and buttons via an ultra-low power wireless protocol. This technology extends the battery life of devices by up to 10 times, in contrast to devices powered by the Wi-Fi protocol.
- Smart Action- With Tapo Smart Hub H100, you can trigger a Shortcut or control Tapo devices (such as smart plugs, smart lights and smart switches) based on sensor detection or with a button press. (Tapo H100 cannot directly connect to Tapo smart plugs or smart lighting, 2.4GHz Wi-Fi is required.)
- All Devices in One Hub- Each Tapo Hub can connect up to 64 Tapo devices throughout your home. Build and manage your smart home ecosystem with ease.
- Protect Your Home Day and Night- By integrating with Tapo motion sensors, door/window sensors, and other devices, the Tapo Hub can activate a high-decibel siren (up to 90 dB) to alert of potential hazards or discourage intruders.
That is different from the new products being Matter-over-Thread devices themselves. Older products have not automatically become native Matter devices. They may continue to depend on DIRIGERA and may expose different capabilities in third-party platforms than the newer products do.
Platform compatibility
IKEA’s U.S. product pages cite compatibility examples including Amazon, Apple, Google, Homey and Samsung. Samsung announced in April 2026 that SmartThings supports 25 IKEA Matter-over-Thread devices directly through a SmartThings hub, including bulbs, plugs, remotes and sensors.
This does not mean every product offers every feature on every platform. Before buying, confirm:
Recommended Free Tools
- that your hub includes Thread Border Router functionality;
- that the platform supports the required Matter device category;
- which measurements, controls and alerts the platform exposes;
- whether the product must be added directly to the third-party platform or through DIRIGERA;
- how the device will be shared if you use multiple Matter ecosystems.
What to buy for common setups
Cheapest useful starter
Choose one KAJPLATS bulb and a BILRESA remote, or use a GRILLPLATS plug for a lamp. This is inexpensive if you already have a compatible Matter controller and Thread Border Router. Without one, the hub cost can be much greater than the accessory cost.

IKEA-first smart home
Start with DIRIGERA, then add KAJPLATS bulbs, a BILRESA remote and a sensor such as TIMMERFLOTTE or KLIPPBOK. This setup is the clearest route to the IKEA Home smart app and provides a way to manage newer devices alongside supported older IKEA products.
Leak and entry alerts
Use KLIPPBOK for water-leak alerts and MYGGBETT for door or window monitoring. MYGGSPRAY can add motion-triggered lighting or notifications. These products provide monitoring and alerts; they are not professionally monitored security equipment, automatic water shutoff systems or substitutes for certified smoke or carbon-monoxide alarms.
Room climate monitoring
TIMMERFLOTTE provides temperature and humidity readings. ALPSTUGA is intended for air-quality monitoring. Their usefulness depends on the measurements and automations exposed by the chosen platform. An air-quality sensor should not be treated as a medical, fire or carbon-monoxide safety device.
Outdoor appliance control
TOFSMYGGA is listed as an outdoor smart plug. Check the product’s environmental rating, local electrical requirements and the equipment manufacturer’s instructions before using it outdoors. Do not assume that every outdoor appliance is suitable simply because the plug is marketed for outdoor use.

How to set up the products
- Choose the ecosystem: use IKEA Home smart with DIRIGERA, or a different Matter platform with a compatible controller and Thread Border Router.
- Check support: verify that the platform supports the specific device category and desired functions.
- Power the device: install the required batteries or connect the plug or lamp. Batteries are sold separately for some products.
- Update the system: install current versions of the IKEA Home smart app, DIRIGERA firmware and third-party platform software.
- Commission the product: scan the Matter QR code or enter the setup code supplied with the product. Add it through IKEA Home smart when using DIRIGERA, or through the selected third-party platform when connecting directly.
- Place it appropriately: Thread is a mesh network. Positioning and nearby powered Thread devices can affect connectivity. IKEA’s listings do not establish a universal range figure.
- Test the automation: try the intended action, such as motion-controlled lighting, a door notification, a leak alert or a smart-plug schedule.
If pairing or control fails
- Check battery orientation, charge and replacement batteries.
- Confirm that the device is actually in pairing mode.
- Move it closer to the Thread Border Router and retry.
- Update the hub, app and platform software.
- Remove an incomplete pairing entry before trying again.
- Confirm that the selected platform supports the product category.
- Check whether the device was added to DIRIGERA or directly to another Matter fabric.
Multiple ecosystems can complicate setup: a device commissioned into one Matter fabric may require additional sharing steps before it appears elsewhere. Exact reset and recovery procedures vary by product, so use the relevant IKEA manual rather than applying a generic reset sequence.
Is IKEA’s Matter range worth buying?
The range is most compelling for IKEA households and for people who already own a compatible Matter-and-Thread hub. The prices for basic sensors, remotes, plugs and bulbs are low, and Matter gives the newer products a path into several major smart-home ecosystems.
The value is less obvious for someone starting from nothing. A $9.99 sensor still needs a controller and Thread Border Router, and the need for a hub removes the appeal of a completely hub-free setup. Buyers who need professional safety equipment, detailed local analytics, power monitoring or highly granular automation should also look beyond this range.
