IKEA’s 21 New Smart-Home Devices: U.S. Prices, Matter Compatibility, and What You Need

IKEA’s affordable smart-home range is real, but the $7-to-$10 device prices do not tell the whole story. Here are the products, U.S. prices, Matter and Thread requirements, and when DIRIGERA is worth buying.

Yes, IKEA’s affordable smart-home expansion is real—but the headline needs context. IKEA announced 21 Matter-compatible products on November 6, 2025, including KAJPLATS bulbs, sensors, BILRESA remotes, and GRILLPLATS smart plugs. By August 2026, many were listed in IKEA’s U.S. catalog. The devices are inexpensive individually, but most buyers still need a compatible smart-home controller, and Thread-based products require suitable Thread networking infrastructure.

There is also an important counting distinction: Samsung said SmartThings supported 25 IKEA Matter-over-Thread devices on April 21, 2026. That is an expanded or differently counted current range—not evidence that IKEA’s original announcement contained 25 products.

What IKEA announced

IKEA described the November 2025 launch as a rebuild of its smart-home range around Matter, the interoperability standard intended to let compatible devices work across multiple platforms. The announcement covered three broad groups:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Lighting: 11 KAJPLATS bulb variations covering common bulb shapes, brightness levels, white-spectrum lighting, and color-and-white-spectrum models.
  • Sensors: five products for motion, doors and windows, temperature and humidity, air quality, and water leaks.
  • Controls and plugs: BILRESA physical remotes and GRILLPLATS smart plugs.

The 21-product total includes bulb variations and remote kits, rather than 21 entirely different types of hardware. IKEA says the new bulbs offer more color choices and broader intensity ranges than its previous TRÅDFRI range. Availability and pricing vary by country and market.

  • You can use TRÅDFRI remote to control up to 10 LED light bulbs at a time - dim, switch on and off, choose colors and step by step change from warm to cold light.
  • You can use TRÅDFRI gateway and app to create several groups of light sources and control them in different ways.
  • The remote control works with TRÅDFRI bulbs.
  • With TRÅDFRI remote control you can dim your lights without a hardwired installation.
  • A magnet makes it easy to attach the remote control to the wall bracket.

The new product families

KAJPLATS smart bulbs

KAJPLATS includes bulbs for several regional socket standards and fixture types:

  • E26/E27 globe bulbs
  • E12/E14 compact bulbs, depending on market
  • GU10 spotlights
  • Clear-glass decorative bulbs
  • White-spectrum models
  • Color-and-white-spectrum models
  • Several lumen levels and dimmable options

IKEA’s global announcement listed approximate configurations including E26/E27 bulbs from 470 to 1,521 lumens, E14/P45 bulbs from 470 to 806 lumens, a 470-lumen GU10 color bulb, a 575-lumen GU10 white-spectrum bulb, and decorative bulbs ranging from roughly 470 to 810 lumens.

U.S. shoppers should not treat E14 and E27 as interchangeable with American socket names. The U.S. catalog uses E12 and E26 listings, while European markets commonly use E14 and E27. Check the exact socket and voltage information for the regional product before ordering.

Sensors

  • MYGGSPRAY: An indoor/outdoor motion sensor for lighting routines and other automations. Confirm the specific model’s environmental rating before using it outdoors.
  • MYGGBETT: A door/window sensor that can trigger lights, routines, or notifications through a compatible hub and app.
  • TIMMERFLOTTE: A temperature and humidity sensor for monitoring indoor conditions.
  • ALPSTUGA: An air-quality sensor measuring CO2, PM2.5, temperature, and humidity. It is a household monitoring device, not a medical-grade air-quality instrument.
  • KLIPPBOK: A water-leak sensor with a local sound alert and possible phone notifications when connected through a compatible hub and platform.

These products serve different purposes. A motion sensor is primarily an automation trigger; a door sensor can support occupancy or entry routines; TIMMERFLOTTE and ALPSTUGA monitor environmental conditions; and KLIPPBOK is intended to provide an early warning of household water leaks.

BILRESA remotes

BILRESA provides physical control for people who do not want to depend entirely on a phone app or voice assistant. The dual-button remote supports basic on/off, dimming, color, and scene control. The scroll-wheel version offers more granular dimming and color-temperature adjustment. IKEA also lists remote kits containing three remotes in different colors.

Remote behavior can depend on the selected platform. A remote may control one bulb, a group, or a scene, and the available actions may not be identical in IKEA Home smart, Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, or another Matter controller.

GRILLPLATS smart plug

GRILLPLATS can remotely switch lamps and smaller appliances, track energy use, and pair with remotes or sensors. Do not treat it as a universal controller for every appliance. Check the U.S. product’s electrical rating and restrictions before connecting heaters, high-load equipment, medical devices, or anything that must operate safely without interruption.

What Matter means in practice

Matter is designed to reduce platform lock-in. A Matter-compatible bulb or sensor may be added to a compatible Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings, Home Assistant, or IKEA setup rather than being restricted to one manufacturer’s ecosystem.

However, Matter does not mean hub-free. IKEA says Matter-enabled products need a smart-home hub, such as DIRIGERA or a compatible hub from another brand. Thread-based Matter devices also need an appropriate Matter controller or Thread-capable border-router arrangement. The exact requirements depend on the platform and device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

DIRIGERA’s role

DIRIGERA is IKEA’s central hub for the IKEA Home smart ecosystem. IKEA describes it as both a Matter controller and a Matter Bridge. That means it can control compatible third-party products and expose older, non-Matter IKEA products to Matter platforms.

DIRIGERA is especially relevant to TRÅDFRI owners. Older IKEA products may use Zigbee or other legacy ecosystem technologies rather than Matter. New products should not automatically be assumed to use the same connection method as existing products. Keeping legacy devices connected through DIRIGERA may be the simplest way to combine them with newer Matter products.

You may not need DIRIGERA if you already have a compatible Matter controller and only want to use the new devices. But adding DIRIGERA can make sense if you want IKEA Home smart management, need to bridge older IKEA products, or prefer IKEA’s central ecosystem. It is not automatically the best purchase for someone who already has suitable Matter hardware.

Confirmed SmartThings example

Samsung said on April 21, 2026, that SmartThings supported 25 IKEA Matter-over-Thread devices, including bulbs, plugs, remotes, temperature and humidity sensors, air-quality sensors, motion sensors, door sensors, and leak sensors. Samsung says the referenced IKEA devices can connect directly to a SmartThings hub.

This does not guarantee identical behavior across every platform. Pairing may succeed while particular functions—such as energy reporting, multi-button events, firmware updates, remote access, alerts, or advanced automations—remain platform-dependent.

What will a starter setup really cost?

The low individual prices are genuine, but a first-time buyer should calculate the complete system rather than looking only at the sensor or bulb price.

Cheapest Matter lighting experiment

A KAJPLATS white-spectrum bulb may cost approximately $9.99, assuming you already own a compatible Matter controller. That is the approximate incremental cost, not necessarily the cost of a complete working setup.

IKEA-centered lighting setup

A KAJPLATS bulb at roughly $9.99 to $14.99, a BILRESA remote at about $6.99 to $9.99, and a DIRIGERA hub at approximately $119.99 produce a total of about $137 to $145 before tax. The exact total depends on the bulb and remote selected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Budget household monitoring setup

MYGGBETT, KLIPPBOK, and MYGGSPRAY were each listed at approximately $9.99. Adding DIRIGERA produces an illustrative total of roughly $150 before tax. If an existing compatible Matter controller can handle the desired devices, the hub cost may not be necessary.

Also account for batteries, the capabilities of your controller, Wi-Fi and Thread network conditions, app permissions, and whether the platform requires an account or offers optional cloud services.

Best uses for IKEA’s new range

  • Cheapest entry point: A KAJPLATS white-spectrum bulb, especially if you already own a compatible Matter controller.
  • Low-cost automation: MYGGSPRAY for turning lights on when someone enters a hallway, closet, stairway, or entry area.
  • Affordable household warning: KLIPPBOK beneath a sink, near a washing machine, or beside another potential leak source, provided its notifications are configured correctly.
  • Physical control: BILRESA for bedrooms, living rooms, rentals, or households where guests and children need a straightforward control method.
  • Indoor-air monitoring: ALPSTUGA for readers specifically interested in CO2 and PM2.5 readings, with the understanding that it is not a medical or professional monitoring instrument.
  • Simple lighting automation: MYGGSPRAY paired with KAJPLATS bulbs for motion-triggered lighting.

Who should buy IKEA’s smart-home devices?

IKEA is a strong fit for budget-conscious buyers who want basic smart-home functions without paying premium ecosystem prices. It is particularly attractive if you already own IKEA lighting, prefer physical remotes, rent your home, or have a Matter-compatible controller already installed.

The sensors, remotes, plugs, and entry-level bulbs offer the clearest value. Matter also makes IKEA more useful for people who want to mix brands instead of building an entire home around one manufacturer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who should be cautious?

  • Buyers wanting a hub-free system: Matter still requires a controller, and Thread devices need suitable Thread infrastructure.
  • Buyers seeking professional security: Door, motion, and leak sensors are not replacements for professionally monitored security or water-protection systems.
  • Lighting enthusiasts: Premium ecosystems may offer more elaborate effects, scene libraries, integrations, and advanced color controls.
  • High-load appliance users: Do not connect GRILLPLATS to an appliance without checking its electrical rating and suitability.
  • Cross-platform buyers: Do not assume Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, IKEA Home smart, and Home Assistant expose exactly the same controls or notifications.
  • International shoppers: Confirm socket type, voltage, regional model, outdoor rating, and local availability.

Troubleshooting common problems

A Thread device cannot be discovered

Confirm that your chosen controller supports Matter over Thread and that a Thread border router is available. A Wi-Fi-only Matter setup may not be sufficient for a Thread product.

The device pairs but lacks expected controls

Check the platform’s support for that specific device type and Matter functionality. Successful pairing does not guarantee feature parity with IKEA’s own app or hub.

Older IKEA products disappear

Legacy TRÅDFRI-era devices may need to remain connected through DIRIGERA. Do not assume a new Matter setup will automatically replace the bridge function required by older products.

Notifications do not arrive

Check hub connectivity, app permissions, remote-access settings, account configuration, and whether the selected platform supports alerts for that sensor. A sensor cannot guarantee phone notifications on its own.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A bulb or remote behaves unexpectedly

Check whether the remote is assigned to an individual device, a group, or a scene. Also confirm that the bulb’s socket, regional model, and supported color or dimming functions match your expectations.

Bottom line

IKEA’s 21-product announcement was genuine, and the U.S. catalog now shows a broader, increasingly available Matter-focused range. The best value is in inexpensive sensors, remotes, plugs, and basic KAJPLATS bulbs. Just compare the total system cost—including DIRIGERA or another controller, Thread requirements, batteries, and platform limitations—rather than assuming a $7 or $10 device is a complete smart-home solution.
