IKEA’s 21 Matter-Compatible Smart-Home Gadgets: The Ones Worth Buying

Verdict: IKEA’s new Matter-compatible range is most appealing when you buy one inexpensive device that solves a real household problem—a leak sensor, door sensor, physical remote, smart plug or bulb. You do not need to buy the entire IKEA system, but Matter does not mean completely hub-free: you still need a compatible Matter controller, and Thread-based devices need Thread network infrastructure.

IKEA announced the range on November 6, 2025, and products have been rolling out by market. U.S. availability, stock and prices can change.

What are IKEA’s “21 gadgets”?

The headline count includes product variations rather than 21 completely different device categories. The range consists mainly of:

  • 11 KAJPLATS smart-bulb variations, including E12/E14, E26/E27 and GU10 formats, white-spectrum and color versions, and different brightness levels.
  • Five sensors: MYGGSPRAY, MYGGBETT, TIMMERFLOTTE, ALPSTUGA and KLIPPBOK.
  • Four BILRESA remote products: dual-button and scroll-wheel remotes, each sold both individually and in kits.
  • GRILLPLATS, a smart plug.

See IKEA’s full product announcement for the global range. Socket standards and exact product names vary by country, so U.S. buyers should check the local product page rather than relying on the global list.

My favourite IKEA Matter devices

These picks are based on price, practical usefulness, ease of placement and whether the product remains useful without committing to a complete IKEA setup.

1. KLIPPBOK: the most practical safety purchase

The KLIPPBOK water-leak sensor is the easiest product in the range to justify. Place it beneath a kitchen sink, washing machine, dishwasher, water heater or basement utility connection. IKEA describes it as providing an audible alert, with phone notifications when connected to a hub.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The observed U.S. price was $9.99, before batteries. That is inexpensive insurance against discovering a slow leak after it has damaged cabinets, flooring or drywall.

It is not a professionally monitored alarm and cannot shut off your water supply. Treat it as an early-warning sensor, not a replacement for plumbing maintenance, a leak-shutoff system or a monitored safety installation. See the KLIPPBOK product page.

2. MYGGBETT: the easiest automation starter

MYGGBETT detects whether a door or window is open or closed. That makes it useful for more than entry notifications:

  • Turn on a closet light when the door opens.
  • Notify you if a window is left open.
  • Trigger an arrival or departure routine.
  • Monitor a medicine cabinet, storage room or child-safety gate.

At an observed U.S. price of $9.99, it is a straightforward first Matter sensor. It detects state; it is not a burglar alarm or professional security system.

3. TIMMERFLOTTE: low-cost temperature and humidity monitoring

TIMMERFLOTTE measures temperature and humidity and has a local display that appears when its button is pressed. It suits bedrooms, nurseries, home offices, plant rooms and areas where excess humidity may be a concern.

The observed U.S. price was $9.99, with two AAA batteries sold separately. It should be treated as a household monitoring device, not a medical, laboratory or HVAC-calibration instrument. The IKEA product page has the current regional details.

4. BILRESA dual-button remote: the best physical control

Smart-home systems are less frustrating when people can control them without opening an app. The BILRESA dual-button remote is listed at an observed U.S. price of $6.99 and is designed for functions such as on/off, brightness, color and scenes, according to IKEA.

It is especially useful for guests, children, older household members and anyone who prefers a wall or handheld control. The scroll-wheel model was listed at $9.99, while remote kits cost more. Exact scene and color functions can vary by the Matter platform you use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. GRILLPLATS: a useful renter-friendly upgrade

GRILLPLATS can make a suitable table lamp, floor lamp or small appliance controllable from a smart-home system. The observed U.S. price was $7.99, or $14.99 with a remote.

  • MULTI-PROTOCOL SUPPORT WITH EXTENDED RANGE: A single hub covers Matter 1.5, Z-Wave 800 Series with Long Range, Zigbee 3.0, and Bluetooth, so existing devices stay compatible without extra bridges or adapters; 800 Series Z-Wave and Zigbee 3.0 deliver improved reliability and mesh stability, backed by Z-Wave Alliance membership; 2 dedicated external antennas, one for Z-Wave and one for Zigbee, extend wireless reach in larger homes and device-dense environments where signal consistency is critical
  • AI-ASSISTED AUTOMATION AND ADVANCED RULE ENGINE: The AI-assisted routine builder suggests and builds automations based on your connected devices, no programming required; Rule Machine enables multi-condition logic across lighting scenes, geofenced arrivals, layered security responses, and whole-home scheduling; when your family arrives after dark, the hub can unlock the door, activate pathway lights, and adjust the thermostat, turning complex sequences into reliable hands-free routines

Use it conservatively. Avoid heaters, irons, stoves, medical equipment, continuously running pumps and appliances that could restart unsafely when power returns. Check the U.S. model’s electrical rating and the appliance manufacturer’s instructions. A smart plug does not replace built-in safety controls.

IKEA’s global announcement mentions energy tracking, but regional specifications can differ. Confirm that feature on the exact U.S. listing before buying for that purpose.

6. KAJPLATS color bulbs: inexpensive Matter lighting

KAJPLATS covers several socket types, brightness levels and color options. Examples seen on IKEA’s U.S. site included:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • E26 1,100-lumen color and white-spectrum bulb: $12.99 per pack.
  • E26 1,600-lumen white-spectrum bulb: $13.99 per pack.
  • E12 800-lumen color and white-spectrum bulb: $9.99 per pack.
  • GU10 517-lumen color and white-spectrum bulb: $9.99 per pack.
  • E12 450-lumen white-spectrum bulb: $8.99 per pack.

Before ordering, check the socket, physical dimensions, lumen output and whether the bulb is color-changing or white-spectrum only. The U.S. smart-lighting catalogue is the better reference for current stock and pricing.

7. ALPSTUGA: worthwhile when air-quality data matters

ALPSTUGA measures carbon dioxide, PM2.5 particles, temperature and humidity. At an observed U.S. price of $34.99, it is more specialised than TIMMERFLOTTE and makes sense for people who specifically want air-quality information.

Do not treat it as a medical diagnostic device or assume its readings alone explain a health problem. Ventilation, filtration and professional assessment may still be necessary.

What Matter changes—and what it does not

Matter is an interoperability standard. IKEA says these products can work with platforms including Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings, Homey and other compatible systems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That can reduce platform lock-in: a Matter device may be added to the smart-home ecosystem you already use instead of requiring IKEA’s app. However, “Matter-compatible” does not guarantee identical features everywhere. One platform may expose temperature and humidity separately, while another may offer fewer controls or different automation triggers. Check current support in your chosen platform before buying a large batch.

Matter also does not mean that every product connects directly to your Wi-Fi router. Many of these low-power devices use Matter over Thread.

Do you need the DIRIGERA hub?

Not necessarily—but you do need the right infrastructure. A Matter controller manages Matter devices and automations. A Thread Border Router connects Thread devices to your home network. Some hardware performs both roles, but they are not the same function.

IKEA’s U.S. guide says DIRIGERA is not required for Matter devices, while recommending it for a simpler IKEA-centred setup. DIRIGERA provides Matter controller, bridge and Thread Border Router functionality and is particularly useful if you have older TRÅDFRI or other IKEA devices.

  • SEVEN(!) TECHNOLOGIES IN ONE LOCAL-FIRST HUB: Homey Pro features Wi-Fi, Zigbee, Z-Wave Plus, Infrared, BLE, Matter and Thread. That’s more protocols than any other smart home hub. These are all controlled locally: Homey Pro processes everything on-premise. Your data is stored on Homey Pro itself, and cloud-dependency is minimalized.
  • POWERFUL ENERGY SAVINGS: Automate your home to save energy, or schedule your usage according to solar generation or dynamic tariffs. Save on your energy bill without losing any comfort.

The observed U.S. price was $119.99. It is a sensible purchase when you want the IKEA Home smart app, IKEA routines, older-device integration or one dedicated IKEA hub. It is poor value if you already have a compatible Matter controller and Thread Border Router and only want one $9.99 sensor.

Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa and SmartThings users should check the exact capabilities of their controller hardware. Not every Apple, Nest, Echo or SmartThings device supports every Matter and Thread function.

How to set up an IKEA Matter device

  1. Install the required batteries or connect the device to power.
  2. Put it into pairing mode using the product instructions.
  3. Open IKEA Home smart, Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings or another supported Matter app.
  4. Scan the Matter QR code on the product or packaging.
  5. If scanning fails, enter the 11-digit numeric Matter code printed on the device or packaging.
  6. Assign the product to a room.
  7. Create an automation or scene and test it before relying on it.

Matter supports multi-admin sharing, so a device can potentially be shared with another ecosystem. The process is not always identical between platforms. Keep the product’s code information until setup and any later reset or transfer is complete.

Common problems to expect

The device will not pair

Check that the product is in pairing mode, the QR code is legible, the app is current and the Matter controller is active. Try entering the numeric code manually.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The sensor goes offline

Thread devices depend on a functioning Thread network. Check the Thread Border Router, home-network stability, distance from the nearest Thread device and battery level. A device that works near the router may be unreliable at the far end of a house or in a heavily obstructed area.

The device works in one app but not another

That can be a platform feature difference rather than a faulty product. Confirm that the device has been shared correctly through Matter’s multi-admin process and check which measurements or controls the second platform supports.

The battery cost changes the bargain

Several sensors require two AAA batteries sold separately. Include replacement batteries when comparing the real cost with a competitor that includes one in the box.

Best choices by use case

Use case Best starting point Why
Preventing water damage KLIPPBOK Low-cost early warning under likely leak points.
Closets and cabinets MYGGBETT plus a KAJPLATS bulb Door opening can trigger useful lighting.
Bedroom or nursery monitoring TIMMERFLOTTE Simple temperature and humidity information.
Physical lighting control BILRESA dual-button remote Low-cost control without a phone.
Renters GRILLPLATS or KAJPLATS Portable upgrades without rewiring.
Air-quality awareness ALPSTUGA Measures CO2, PM2.5, temperature and humidity.
Existing IKEA smart home DIRIGERA plus compatible Matter devices Better fit for older IKEA products and IKEA’s app.

What I would approach cautiously

  • Do not buy DIRIGERA solely for one Matter sensor if your existing smart-home hardware already supplies Matter and Thread.
  • Do not assume every ecosystem exposes every Matter feature identically.
  • Do not describe MYGGBETT or MYGGSPRAY as a complete security system.
  • Do not use KLIPPBOK instead of a professional leak-shutoff or monitored system where the consequences are serious.
  • Do not use GRILLPLATS with dangerous or safety-critical appliances.
  • Do not buy a bulb before checking its socket, brightness, dimensions and color capability.

Prices and availability

Prices below were observed on IKEA’s U.S. website in August 2026 and may change:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • MYGGSPRAY, MYGGBETT, TIMMERFLOTTE and KLIPPBOK: $9.99 each.
  • ALPSTUGA: $34.99.
  • BILRESA dual-button remote: $6.99.
  • BILRESA scroll-wheel remote: $9.99.
  • GRILLPLATS: $7.99, or $14.99 with remote.
  • KAJPLATS bulbs: approximately $8.99–$13.99 per pack among the listed examples.
  • DIRIGERA: $119.99.

Availability and product selection vary by country and local store. Check IKEA’s U.S. smart-home catalogue, remote and sensor listings and regional product pages before purchasing.

The sensible way to start

Buy one or two devices that solve a specific problem, then test pairing, Thread coverage and the features exposed by your preferred platform. A $9.99 leak sensor or $6.99 remote is a better first experiment than automatically adding a $119.99 hub.

For most households, I would start with KLIPPBOK, MYGGBETT, TIMMERFLOTTE or the BILRESA dual-button remote. Add KAJPLATS bulbs if you need lighting, GRILLPLATS for a suitable low-risk lamp, and DIRIGERA only when an IKEA-centred system or older-device support justifies it.
