18 IKEA MALM Dresser Upgrades That Look Custom and Hold Up

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An IKEA MALM dresser can be a sharp-looking piece of furniture, but the difference between a clean custom upgrade and a weekend project that starts peeling in six months comes down to prep, fastening, and safety. The best MALM hacks are not complicated. They are controlled: clean surfaces, light materials, straight layout lines, and proper wall anchoring.

On our job sites, we treat furniture modifications the same way we treat built-ins and trim work: level first, measure twice, test adhesion, and avoid asking particleboard to do the job of solid lumber. MALM dressers are not solid wood. Many units use foil or veneer over engineered material, so paint, glue, screws, trim, and legs all need to be chosen with that in mind.

Below are 18 IKEA MALM dresser hacks that a careful homeowner can DIY, with realistic 2026 costs, time estimates, durability notes, and safety cautions. Most fall between $25 and $350 in materials. Premium custom fronts or carpenter-built built-in work can reach $700 to $1,200 or more, but plenty of strong upgrades cost less than a nightstand.

Start Here: Safety, Recall Status, and Wall Anchoring

Before you paint, wrap, add legs, or turn a MALM dresser into a built-in, confirm the dresser is safe to keep in service. IKEA’s 2016 chest and dresser recall covered 17.3 million units, including MALM models, because of tip-over risk. IKEA has offered remedies such as refunds, store credit, and wall-anchoring kits for affected products. If your dresser is older, secondhand, missing hardware, or not anchored, check IKEA’s recall and product support pages before modifying it.

Ougourim Furniture Anchors 10 Pack, Anti Tip Kit for Baby Proofing
  • Baby Safety Guard: Let your little one explore and climb to their heart's content! Baby proof furniture anchors help keep furniture secure from the potential tip-over hazard of curious children. • Easy to Install: Secure your dressers and other large furniture in just a few minutes with anti-tip furniture straps! Following the included instructions, use the hardware pieces provided with the package and easily install with a screwdriver and a drill driver. Choose from vertical or horizontal siding installation for your furniture and potentially save a life!
  • Earthquake-Resistant: Secure your furniture from the unexpected with our heavy-duty straps! Perfect for anchoring bookcases or tall furniture, they can help prevent sliding or toppling during an earthquake with a 5.5 magnitude or lower. For optimal protection, we recommend using two straps per item.
  • Versatile Use: Our anti-tip furniture anchors are the perfect solution for securely anchoring furniture, such as bookcases, bookshelves, dressers, cabinets and wardrobes, to the wall and protecting against unnecessary incidents with toddlers. Additionally, the anti-tip anchor is detachable, so you can easily remove it when needed for cleaning or furniture removal.
  • High Quality Material: These furniture anchors for baby proofing are crafted from high-quality stainless steel material, offering superior corrosion resistance and lasting protection against rust. Fire and heat resistant, they are sturdier and more durable than plastic straps, providing the perfect safeguard for your baby.

The current federal stability rule for clothing storage units applies to products manufactured after September 1, 2023 and is codified at 16 CFR Part 1261 under the STURDY Act and ASTM F2057 framework. That matters because many MALM dressers in homes today predate the newer standard. Even newer furniture should still be anchored according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

CPSC’s 2026 tip-over data estimated that U.S. emergency departments treated an annual average of 17,800 tip-over injuries in 2020-2022, and 44% of victims were under 18. This is not a theoretical risk. If the dresser is in a bedroom, nursery, playroom, rental, or guest room, anchor it.

Use the anti-tip hardware provided by IKEA or request a replacement anchoring kit if yours is missing. If you add legs, a taller base, heavy trim, stone-look panels, or a changing pad, re-check the anchor position. Baseboards often create a gap behind the dresser, so a low-profile anti-tip strap or properly spaced wall cleat may be needed. Fasten to wall studs whenever possible, or use wall anchors rated for the wall type and load.

Quick Cost and Difficulty Guide

Here is the practical budget range for the most common MALM dresser upgrades in 2026. These numbers assume DIY labor and U.S. retail pricing for supplies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Hack Type Typical DIY Cost Time Difficulty Rental-Friendly?
New knobs, pulls, or leather straps $25-$75 1-2 hours Easy Usually
Peel-and-stick paper or faux marble top $25-$90 1-3 hours Easy Yes, if removable
Painted drawer fronts or full paint job $60-$180 1 weekend plus cure time Moderate No
Fluted or reeded drawer fronts $120-$350 1-2 weekends Moderate No
Cane or rattan drawer detail $90-$275 1 weekend Moderate No
Legs, plinth, or base frame $50-$250 2-5 hours Moderate Sometimes
Custom fronts or overlays $200-$700+ 2-6 hours after delivery Moderate No
Built-in closet or wall unit look $300-$1,200+ 1-3 days Advanced No

A basic refresh is a good one-hour project. Painting is a weekend project because primer, enamel, and topcoat need dry time. Trim, cane, and built-in work take longer because drawer gaps, filler strips, and scribing have to be accurate.

Tools and Materials That Make MALM Hacks Look Professional

You do not need a full shop, but a few tools make a large difference. For most upgrades, plan on a tape measure, pencil, painter’s tape, sanding sponge in the 180- to 220-grit range, microfiber cloths, a cabinet hardware jig, drill, sharp utility knife, small foam roller, quality brush, and clamps or blue tape for holding trim while adhesive sets.

For paint, use a bonding primer made for slick laminate or furniture surfaces, then a cabinet, trim, or furniture enamel. Standard wall paint is too soft for drawer fronts that get touched every day. Expect $15-$60 or more per gallon for paint and about $20-$60 per gallon for primer, although a MALM project usually needs quarts rather than full gallons. Low- or zero-VOC coatings cost more but are worth considering in bedrooms and nurseries. The EPA identifies volatile organic compounds as indoor air quality pollutants, so ventilate, follow label instructions, and allow full cure time before loading drawers back into a closed room.

For adhesives, construction adhesive is not automatically better. On thin trim, a high-quality panel adhesive, contact cement, or manufacturer-approved craft adhesive may give better control. Too much wet adhesive can swell engineered material. For hardware, avoid oversized screws that bite too deeply into particleboard. Use the shortest screw that fully engages the hardware, and test on one drawer before drilling all six.

18 IKEA MALM Dresser Hacks Anyone Can DIY

1. Swap in Proper Drawer Pulls

Cost: $25-$90. Time: 1-2 hours. Durability: High if drilled cleanly.

MALM’s flat fronts are perfect for hardware. Choose knobs, bar pulls, half-moon pulls, or edge pulls, then use a cabinet hardware jig so every hole lands on the same centerline. For a 6-drawer dresser, hardware alignment is the first thing people notice. Measure drawer height, mark the center, and make a test template from scrap cardboard before drilling.

Use painter’s tape over the drill location to reduce chipping. Do not overtighten the screws. Particleboard and foil surfaces can compress, leaving a dimple around the pull.

2. Add Leather or Suede Pulls

Cost: $20-$70. Time: 1 hour. Rental-friendly: Usually, if you use existing or minimal holes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Leather pulls soften the MALM’s flat modern look and work especially well in bedrooms. Use 3/4-inch to 1-inch wide leather strips, Chicago screws, or machine screws with washers. Pre-punch holes in the leather so the pull sits flat.

For child safety, avoid long loop pulls on low drawers where children may tug or climb. Keep the loop short enough to grab but not long enough to invite hanging weight.

3. Use peel-and-stick wallpaper on Drawer Fronts

Cost: $25-$75. Time: 1-3 hours. Durability: Moderate.

This is the easiest renter-friendly MALM hack. Remove drawers, clean the fronts with mild detergent, dry completely, and apply removable wallpaper horizontally with a felt squeegee. Wrap only slightly around the back edge so drawers still clear the frame.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose thicker peel-and-stick material for better coverage over dark finishes. Avoid wet rooms and high-humidity spaces unless the product is rated for that use.

4. Install a Faux Marble or Stone-Look Top

Cost: $25-$90. Time: 1-2 hours. Best for: Dressers used as vanities, entry storage, or nightstand pairs.

A faux marble top gives MALM a cleaner finished surface without adding real stone weight. Use peel-and-stick vinyl, thin laminate, or a removable desktop mat cut to size. Real stone is usually too heavy for this type of furniture unless a carpenter builds a proper support base.

Keep the top surface dry and use trays under cosmetics, plants, and lamps. Water rings and adhesive failure usually start at the edges.

5. Paint the Drawer Fronts Only

Cost: $60-$140. Time: One weekend plus cure time. Difficulty: Moderate.

Painting only the drawer fronts gives you a two-tone look without painting the whole carcass. Remove the drawers, label their positions, clean, scuff sand with 180-220 grit, wipe with tack cloth, apply bonding primer, then use cabinet or furniture enamel.

Do not skip the primer. MALM foil and veneer surfaces are slick, and paint failure usually starts around pulls and drawer edges. Give the finish several days to harden before heavy use; many coatings take a week or more to reach practical toughness.

6. Paint the Whole Dresser Like Cabinetry

Cost: $80-$180. Time: 2-3 days of work spread over a week. Durability: High with proper prep.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A full paint job is worth doing when the dresser is visible from multiple sides. Work horizontally when possible. Remove drawers and hardware, scuff every surface, prime, sand lightly, then apply two thin coats of enamel. A small foam roller gives a smoother finish than a cheap brush.

For bedrooms, let the finish cure in a ventilated area before reinstalling. Low- or zero-VOC paint helps, but ventilation still matters.

7. Add Fluted Half-Round Trim

Cost: $120-$350. Time: 1-2 weekends. Durability: High if bonded well.

Fluting is one of the highest-impact MALM upgrades. Use half-round molding, dowels ripped in half, or pre-made fluted panels. Keep profiles thin, often 1/4 inch to 3/8 inch deep, so drawers do not look bulky or interfere with adjacent furniture.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stop trim slightly short of drawer edges to preserve clean gaps. Dry-fit every piece before glue. If using individual strips, build a spacer jig so the reveal stays consistent from drawer to drawer.

8. Apply Reeded or Tambour Panels

Cost: $100-$300. Time: 4-8 hours. Difficulty: Moderate.

Reeded sheet goods are faster than individual dowels. Cut panels to the drawer front size, sand cut edges, and bond with an adhesive compatible with both the panel and the dresser surface. Weight the panel evenly while it cures so it does not crown in the middle.

Because this adds thickness, check clearances at the top and sides before committing. Open and close every drawer after temporarily taping a sample in place.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9. Add Cane or Rattan Insets

Cost: $90-$275. Time: 1 weekend. Best look: Natural, coastal, nursery, or warm modern rooms.

Cane webbing works well when framed with thin molding. You are not usually cutting into the MALM drawer; you are creating a framed cane panel on top of the existing front. Soak cane only if the manufacturer calls for it, and keep excess moisture away from the dresser material.

Use trim to hide edges and fasteners. Paint the dresser first, then apply cane and trim after the finish has cured enough to handle.

10. Create Campaign-Style Drawer Fronts

Cost: $75-$220. Time: 3-6 hours. Materials: Corner brackets, brass pulls, thin trim, primer, paint.

Campaign hardware gives MALM a structured, furniture-store look. The key is restraint: thin corner brackets, centered pulls, and consistent spacing. Lay out all brass pieces with painter’s tape before drilling.

If the hardware is purely decorative, use small screws or high-bond tape rated for the material. Heavy brass hardware can add unnecessary weight to drawer fronts.

11. Use Decorative Overlays

Cost: $100-$300. Time: 2-5 hours plus paint. Durability: High when bonded and painted properly.

Decorative overlays are pre-cut panels or trim patterns installed over flat drawer fronts. They are useful when you want a paneled, geometric, or traditional look without building trim from scratch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Paint the overlays and drawer fronts together for the most custom result. If the overlay material is plastic or MDF, confirm primer compatibility first. Different materials expand and accept paint differently.

12. Add Thin Wood veneer

Cost: $80-$250. Time: 4-8 hours. Finish: Warm wood without replacing the dresser.

Wood veneer can make a MALM look more expensive, but it requires patience. Use peel-and-stick veneer or contact-cement veneer designed for furniture surfaces. Cut oversize, apply carefully, then trim with a sharp blade.

Seal veneer with a clear finish after installation. Avoid thick edge buildup that catches when drawers slide past the frame.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

13. Build a Safer Leg or Base Upgrade

Cost: $50-$250. Time: 2-5 hours. Safety note: Re-anchor after raising the dresser.

Legs can improve proportions, but do not simply screw four legs into weak particleboard corners and call it done. A safer method is to build a continuous plywood or solid-wood base frame that spreads the load across the dresser bottom. Add levelers if the floor is uneven.

Once the dresser is raised, the center of gravity changes. Reinstall anti-tip hardware at the new height. In a child’s room, a low plinth base is usually smarter than tall tapered legs.

14. Add a Plinth Base for a Built-In Look

Cost: $75-$225. Time: 3-6 hours. Best for: Bedrooms, closets, and media walls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A plinth base makes MALM look grounded and intentional. Build a rectangular base from 1x material or plywood, set the dresser on top, shim level, then trim the front to match nearby baseboards.

Do not force the dresser to follow an uneven floor. Level the furniture first, then scribe trim or filler pieces to the room. That is how our crews make cabinet runs look straight in older houses.

15. Pair Two MALM Dressers as a Long Credenza

Cost: $75-$300 beyond the dressers. Time: Half day to weekend. Use: Dining storage, bedroom wall, office storage, or media console.

Two matching MALM dressers can read as one long custom credenza if the tops align and the center gap is controlled. Level both units independently, clamp temporarily, and use a continuous top panel if you want a unified surface.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For media use, do not overload the dresser with an oversized TV unless the furniture and wall anchoring are appropriate. Wall-mounting the TV and anchoring the storage below is the cleaner and safer setup.

16. Convert MALM Into a Closet Built-In

Cost: $300-$1,200+ depending on trim, shelves, and labor. Time: 1-3 days. Difficulty: Advanced DIY or pro.

This is where furniture hacking becomes light carpentry. Set the dresser level, anchor it, then add side fillers, a top shelf, hanging rods, and baseboard trim. Scribe fillers to walls instead of leaving uneven gaps.

Keep access to the anti-tip hardware. If you add lighting, outlets, or hardwired electrical, hire a licensed electrician and check local permit requirements. Most paint and trim work does not need a permit, but electrical changes often do.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

17. Use a MALM as a Desk or Vanity Base

Cost: $100-$400 depending on desktop and supports. Time: 3-8 hours. Best practice: Support the desktop independently.

A MALM dresser can support one side of a desk or vanity, but long spans need legs, brackets, or a wall cleat. A 60-inch to 72-inch desktop should not rely on one dresser and hope. Use proper support at the free end and fasten the top so it cannot slide.

For vanities, protect the top from cosmetics, water, and heat tools. Use trays, a glass top, or a laminate work surface for better durability.

18. Convert a MALM Into Nursery Storage or a Changing Station

Cost: $50-$250. Time: 2-4 hours. Safety priority: Anchor first, accessorize second.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A MALM dresser is often the right height for changing supplies, but it must be anchored and used carefully. Add a changing pad only if it fits securely and does not overhang dangerously. Keep diapers and wipes within reach so no one steps away from the child.

Do not add tall legs to a nursery dresser. Do not install hardware that creates climbing holds. Keep heavy items in lower drawers, and avoid loading the top with baskets that can fall.

Finish Compatibility: What Works on MALM Surfaces

The most durable hacks respect the surface. Peel-and-stick products are lowest commitment and best for renters. Paint is moderately permanent and depends heavily on cleaning, scuff sanding, bonding primer, and cure time. Trim, fluting, cane, and overlays are permanent because adhesive removal will usually damage the foil surface. Custom fronts are premium and may outlast the dresser, but they cost more and require accurate sizing.

If the surface is glossy, greasy, or dusty, nothing sticks well. Clean first with mild detergent or a deglosser compatible with the finish. Sand lightly; you are creating tooth, not grinding through the foil. Vacuum or wipe dust. Prime before paint. Test adhesive on an inconspicuous area before applying panels across the whole dresser.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to DIY vs. When to Hire a Pro

DIY is the right call for hardware swaps, leather pulls, peel-and-stick finishes, painted fronts, decorative overlays, light trim, and simple plinth bases. A careful homeowner can complete those with basic tools and a clean workspace. Budget $25-$180 for simple upgrades and $120-$350 for more involved texture work.

Hire a pro when the dresser is being built into a wall, paired with electrical work, modified to support heavy tops, or used in a room where safety risk is higher. Professional furniture refinishing or carpenter-built built-in work commonly lands around $300-$1,200 or more depending on finish quality, trim, wall scribing, anchoring, and local labor rates. A smaller handyman visit for assembly or anchoring may cost less, but minimum trip charges vary by market.

Also hire help if the dresser is damaged, racked out of square, missing structural parts, or difficult to anchor because of masonry, plaster, metal studs, or unusual baseboards. The price of a professional anchoring visit is small compared with the risk of unstable furniture.

Common Mistakes That Make MALM Hacks Fail

The most common mistake is painting MALM like raw wood. It is not raw wood. Skipping cleaning, sanding, and bonding primer leads to peeling around drawer edges and pulls. The second mistake is using soft wall paint where a harder cabinet or trim enamel belongs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Another common failure is adding too much weight to drawer fronts. Thick hardwood trim, heavy metal plates, stone tops, and oversized hardware can stress slides and fasteners. Keep materials thin and light. If you add legs, use a continuous base frame rather than relying on corner screws alone.

Finally, do not bury the anchoring hardware behind a built-in surround where it cannot be checked. Any modification that changes height, weight, or wall clearance should end with the dresser being re-anchored and tested.

Best MALM Hack by Goal

For renters, choose peel-and-stick paper, leather pulls, or hardware that uses existing holes. For the lowest cost, change pulls and add a removable top surface for $25-$75. For the biggest visual change under $200, paint the drawer fronts with bonding primer and enamel. For the most custom look, use fluting, overlays, or paired dressers with a continuous top. For closets and alcoves, a scribed plinth base and filler panels create the built-in effect without pretending the dresser is custom cabinetry.

The best finished result is usually not the most complicated one. It is the one where the drawer gaps still work, the hardware lines up, the finish has time to cure, and the dresser is anchored properly. That is the difference between a quick furniture hack and a piece that actually earns its place in the room.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you paint an IKEA MALM dresser without sanding?

You can, but it is not the best method. MALM foil and veneer surfaces are slick, so scuff sanding with 180- to 220-grit paper plus bonding primer gives paint a much better chance of lasting.

What primer works best on IKEA MALM laminate or foil surfaces?

Use a bonding primer labeled for slick surfaces such as laminate, veneer, or previously finished furniture. After primer, use cabinet, trim, or furniture enamel rather than standard wall paint.

Is it safe to add legs to an IKEA MALM dresser?

It can be safe if the load is spread through a continuous wood or plywood base frame and the dresser is re-anchored afterward. Avoid screwing isolated legs directly into weak particleboard corners.

Do IKEA MALM dressers need to be anchored to the wall?

Yes. MALM dressers and other clothing storage units should be anchored according to IKEA’s instructions, especially older units, nursery furniture, tall dressers, and any dresser modified with legs or added weight.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How much does an IKEA MALM dresser hack cost in 2026?

A simple DIY refresh usually costs $25-$75. Paint projects commonly run $60-$180. Fluted or cane upgrades often cost $90-$350, while custom fronts or built-in carpentry can reach $700-$1,200 or more.

Do I need a permit to turn IKEA dressers into built-ins?

Paint, trim, and freestanding furniture work usually do not need a permit. Electrical additions, hardwired lighting, outlet changes, or structural modifications may require a licensed electrician and local permits.
