IKEA DIRIGERA Hub and MYGGSPRAY IP67 Motion Sensor Review

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verdict: IKEA’s DIRIGERA hub and MYGGSPRAY motion sensor make a compelling low-cost setup for simple, motion-triggered lighting, particularly in garages, entrances, stairways and storage areas. The $9.99 sensor is the inexpensive part; the $119.99 DIRIGERA hub makes sense mainly if you use several IKEA devices or need support for older TRÅDFRI products. MYGGSPRAY is IP67-rated and marketed for indoor and outdoor use, but IKEA’s technical manual says “indoor use only,” so it should not be treated as an unrestricted, all-weather outdoor sensor.

What are DIRIGERA and MYGGSPRAY?

DIRIGERA is IKEA’s current smart-home hub. It connects to your router with the supplied cable, provides the IKEA Home smart app with a central device-management layer, and supports scenes, groups, routines and automations.

What DIRIGERA actually does

DIRIGERA is more than a remote control for IKEA bulbs. It can:

#1 Best Overall
MoesGo WiFi IR Control Hub for Smart Appliances via Voice and Smart Life/Tuya App, Compatible with Amazon Echo and Google Home
  • 1.All-in-one infrared remote control hub activates air conditioners, TVs, fans, media players, and more; exclusively supports IR (38K kHz) and is not compatible with RF devices
  • 2.With MoesGo smart IR hub, you can use Smart Life/Tuya app to control home devices from anywhere with your smart phone; device share with family members so everyone can join in
  • 3.Use hands-free voice control with Amazon Echo or Google Home to change A/C temperature, turn on fans, change TV channel, play DVDs, turn on your set top box, etc; to see compatible brands and devices, check the Smart Life app
  • 4.Customized DIY copy function allows you to control even more devices by "learning" them from the original remote; includes LED fireplaces, heaters, ceiling fans, etc.
  • 5.Includes USB 2.0 cable and UL certified US adapter for flexible use; works best in a single room as infrared may be blocked by walls; only supports 2.4G Wi-Fi connection; includes full 2-year warranty and 60-day refund guarantee
  • Set up and manage IKEA smart products through the IKEA Home smart app.
  • Bridge older IKEA Zigbee products, including many TRÅDFRI devices, into the current IKEA system.
  • Act as a Matter controller for supported Matter products.
  • Act as a Matter bridge, exposing compatible IKEA products to supported external platforms.
  • Provide Thread Border Router functionality for compatible Thread devices.
  • Run IKEA scenes, groups and motion-based lighting routines.

That does not make DIRIGERA a universal smart-home hub. “Matter compatible” does not guarantee that every device type, sensor event, battery reading or advanced control will appear identically in IKEA Home smart, Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, Homey or Home Assistant. IKEA describes the hub’s Matter roles on its DIRIGERA product page, but compatibility remains feature- and platform-dependent.

Does MYGGSPRAY require DIRIGERA?

No—not necessarily. MYGGSPRAY uses Matter over Thread, so it needs both a compatible Matter controller and a Thread Border Router. DIRIGERA supplies the simplest IKEA-focused route, but IKEA also lists compatible Apple, Google, Amazon and other Matter platforms as possible alternatives.

Situation Best approach
You own IKEA bulbs, outlets, blinds or older TRÅDFRI products DIRIGERA is the most straightforward option.
You already have a compatible Apple, Google or Alexa Matter/Thread setup You may be able to use MYGGSPRAY without DIRIGERA.
You need broad third-party Zigbee support Consider a more general-purpose hub instead.
You want only one sensor and no other IKEA devices DIRIGERA’s cost may outweigh the sensor’s low price.

Before buying without DIRIGERA, confirm that your existing platform exposes MYGGSPRAY as a motion or occupancy sensor and supports the automations you want. A phone alone cannot normally commission or operate a Thread sensor.

MYGGSPRAY specifications and practical limits

Connectivity Matter over Thread
Power Two AAA/HR03 batteries, not included
Rating IP67
Stated range Up to 10 m in open air, according to the technical manual
Temperature guidance 0–40°C (32–104°F), according to the manual
Mounting guidance Below 2 m, according to the manual
Grouped lighting Up to 10 light sources
Estimated battery life Approximately 15 months with two fresh LADDA AAA batteries; actual life varies

Thread range is affected by walls, concrete, metal, appliances and sensor placement. The manual’s 10 m figure is an open-air specification, not a guarantee for a garage, basement or detached outbuilding.

IP67 does not mean unrestricted outdoor installation

IP67 indicates substantial dust protection and resistance to temporary water immersion under standardized test conditions. It does not automatically prove suitability for permanent rain exposure, sprinklers, pressure washing, salt air, direct sun, freezing temperatures, condensation or standing water.

The documentation is particularly important here. IKEA’s product information markets MYGGSPRAY for indoor and outdoor use, while the available technical manual says “indoor use only,” warns against direct sunlight and heat, and specifies 0–40°C operation.

The sensible conclusion is that MYGGSPRAY is IP67-rated hardware with unresolved outdoor-installation restrictions. For a porch, covered entrance or sheltered garage wall, use a shaded, protected location and keep it away from pooling water, heat and direct sun. Do not mount it in a fully exposed position, flood-prone area or location subject to freezing conditions without confirming current regional guidance and the return policy.

Setup: the normal installation path

  1. Update the IKEA Home smart app and DIRIGERA hub.
  2. Install two correctly oriented AAA/HR03 batteries.
  3. Open the IKEA Home smart app and choose to add a device.
  4. Follow the pairing instructions and scan the Matter QR code on the product or packaging.
  5. Assign MYGGSPRAY to a room.
  6. Add compatible lights or create a motion-triggered automation.
  7. Test detection from the sensor’s final mounting position before securing it permanently.

A newly powered Matter device has an approximately 15-minute pairing window. If it expires, press the system button once to reopen it. If the sensor was previously paired, hold the system button for 10 seconds to factory-reset it; this clears its previous connection data and opens another pairing window. IKEA documents this procedure in its Matter pairing FAQ.

If pairing fails

  • Check battery orientation and charge.
  • Update the app, hub and relevant smart-home platform.
  • Pair close to DIRIGERA or the Thread Border Router, then move the sensor after commissioning.
  • Press the system button once if the pairing window has closed.
  • Factory-reset with a 10-second hold if it was previously connected elsewhere.
  • Remove stale Matter entries from the target ecosystem if necessary.
  • Move the sensor away from metal, thick concrete and likely radio obstructions.
  • Confirm that the home has both an active Matter controller and Thread Border Router.

Useful automations

MYGGSPRAY is best suited to straightforward lighting logic:

  • Turn on an entry light when someone approaches.
  • Illuminate a garage, bicycle store or shed temporarily.
  • Use low-brightness lighting in a hallway at night.
  • Trigger several IKEA lights as a group.
  • Use motion as one condition in an arrival or nighttime routine.

IKEA’s Home smart guide describes motion lighting with adjustable on-time and brightness contexts. More advanced behavior—complex conditions, detailed occupancy logic, cross-brand triggers, reliable “motion stopped” handling or security alerts—depends heavily on the controller and platform.

MYGGSPRAY is a motion-triggering automation sensor, not a camera, alarm component or precise presence sensor. It should not be treated as a security-grade detector without separate confirmation that the complete system meets that requirement.

Matter and Thread: the important distinction

Matter is the smart-home application and interoperability standard. Thread is the low-power mesh network used by MYGGSPRAY to communicate. The sensor does not simply connect directly to Wi-Fi because it carries a Matter label.

DIRIGERA connects to the home router using a supplied cable and manages IKEA devices through the app. MYGGSPRAY communicates over Thread to a Border Router, while Matter controllers and ecosystems determine how its motion events are presented and automated.

IKEA lists Apple Home, Google Home and Amazon Alexa among compatible ecosystems, but that should be read as ecosystem compatibility rather than a promise that every feature is exposed everywhere. Verify motion events, battery status, routines and multi-platform sharing for the exact software and hardware versions you own.

Cost in the United States

At the prices listed when checked, DIRIGERA costs $119.99 and MYGGSPRAY costs $9.99. A buyer who needs the IKEA hub therefore pays at least $129.98 before batteries and tax. Batteries are not included, and the exact U.S. price of the required AAA LADDA pack should be checked separately; the cited IKEA battery result surfaced an AA page, not the required AAA product.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • MYGGSPRAY only: $9.99, plus AAA batteries, if you already have suitable Matter/Thread equipment.
  • DIRIGERA plus one sensor: $129.98 before batteries and tax.
  • Complete lighting installation: Add the cost of IKEA bulbs, outlets or fixtures, plus any required mounting and battery supplies.

The sensor’s low price is most persuasive when spread across an existing IKEA installation. Buying the hub for one sensor makes the economics much less attractive.

Customer experience and maintenance

The U.S. IKEA listings show mixed customer sentiment: approximately 3.6/5 for DIRIGERA from more than 700 reviews and approximately 3.2/5 for MYGGSPRAY from more than 300 reviews at the time checked. These are anecdotal signals, not controlled reliability measurements. Reported themes include pairing and connectivity problems alongside positive comments about simple setup and useful automations.

Thread behavior is still receiving firmware attention. IKEA’s public GPL page records DIRIGERA firmware version 2.805.7, dated February 3, 2026, with changes addressing Thread performance in some edge cases. It should not be assumed to be the latest version at publication; update the hub and app before installation.

For offline behavior, separate local sensor-to-hub lighting from remote control, voice assistants, notifications, firmware updates and external Matter integrations. The cited official material establishes the hub’s router and app architecture but does not prove that every feature continues without internet access. Test the specific automation during a controlled internet outage before depending on it.

Common failure modes

The sensor is powered but will not pair

Check the pairing window, reset the sensor if it was previously commissioned, move it near the Border Router and confirm both Matter and Thread support. A Matter QR code does not replace the required network infrastructure.

The sensor works in IKEA Home smart but not elsewhere

The second ecosystem may not expose the relevant Matter sensor event, the device may not have been shared correctly to the additional Matter fabric, or stale commissioning data may remain. Recheck the target platform’s current sensor support rather than assuming all Matter features are universal.

The sensor goes offline

Check batteries, distance, concrete or metal obstructions, hub and app firmware, Thread network health and old Matter-fabric entries. Multiple Thread Border Routers can also complicate troubleshooting if networks are not behaving as expected.

Motion lighting does not behave correctly

Check whether the lights and sensor are managed by the same controller, whether a time-of-day condition is active, whether manual overrides are affecting the lights, and whether the sensor is mounted at an appropriate height and angle. Some timeout, brightness and multi-condition controls may not be available in every platform.
