For a built-in look with doors, choose PAX; for open, wall-mounted storage, compare BOAXEL and AURDAL. The right choice depends on your closet’s measured width, depth and height, the storage you need, and how the system attaches to your wall. Before buying, check the exact combination’s dimensions and included parts, then follow its assembly and anchoring instructions with hardware suited to your wall.
Which IKEA closet system should you buy?
These systems are not interchangeable: PAX uses wardrobe frames, while BOAXEL and AURDAL are open systems with wall-attached components. Compare the form and dimensions of the specific combinations you plan to buy, not just the system name.

How much ceiling clearance does PAX need?
IKEA’s January 2024 US buying guide gives minimum ceiling heights for these two 22 7/8-inch-deep PAX frame sizes:

These clearances apply to the specified frame depth and heights in that guide; do not apply them automatically to a different frame or configuration. Verify the exact frame dimensions and the current assembly instructions before purchase. Also consider whether the assembled frame can be positioned in the room without hitting the ceiling or other obstructions.
How to plan a closet system that fits
- Decide what the closet needs to hold. List clothing and other items, then estimate what should hang and what belongs on shelves, in drawers or in baskets. IKEA’s JONAXEL planning guide also starts with the items to be stored.
- Measure the actual space. Record the available width, depth and height, including the closet opening. Note trim, doors, windows and other obstructions, and make sure doors and windows can still operate.
- Match the system to the room. For PAX, check the frame’s depth and height against the ceiling-clearance guidance. For BOAXEL or AURDAL, map the proposed rail and components onto the actual wall and confirm that the layout fits.
- Check the complete bill of materials. Read the listing for the exact combination. PAX doors and interiors may be separate purchases; BOAXEL combinations enumerate their components, and the cited AURDAL set includes a suspension rail, side panels with legs, shelves and clothes rails.
- Review the installation guide before starting. Confirm the required assembly sequence, wall attachment and any space needed to assemble or position the components. Use the instructions for the exact product rather than assuming another system’s method applies.
For practical measuring and obstruction checks, IKEA’s JONAXEL guide recommends measuring the storage area and accounting for doors and windows. AURDAL’s assembly and planning guide includes checking the suspension rail’s fit.

How to install and anchor the system safely
Wall material and product design affect the appropriate attachment hardware. The product instructions govern; there is no universal screw or plug suitable for every wall. Do not treat a rail as a substitute for any additional securing method specified by the manufacturer.
- PAX: IKEA’s January 2024 guide says to mount frames flush to the wall and secure them using appropriate hardware. It also says two people are required for safe assembly. Follow the guide for the exact frame and configuration.
- BOAXEL: IKEA says to anchor the system with screws and plugs suitable for your home. The product page advises getting professional help if you are uncertain about the appropriate attachment.
- AURDAL: Follow the assembly guide and wall-securing instructions for the exact combination and planned layout.
If you cannot identify suitable attachment hardware for your wall or confirm the required installation method, ask a qualified installer before loading the system. IKEA’s US storage category page also references its partnership with Taskrabbit for furniture assembly; local availability and terms may vary.

- The combination’s full width, depth and height—not just the dimensions of one component.
- Whether the PAX doors and KOMPLEMENT organizers you want are included or listed separately.
