They are clues, not diagnoses: the source may be indoor humidity, water getting in, a failed insulated-glass seal, or pests. Clean up what you can, then check when and where it returns.
Start by noticing where the sign appears
Window clues are easier to interpret when you distinguish moisture on the room-side glass from cloudiness between panes and dampness around the frame. Note whether a mark returns after cleaning, whether it appears after rain, and whether it is limited to one window. These patterns can help guide an inspection, but appearance alone cannot confirm the cause.

- Wet room-side glass: Consider indoor humidity and cold glass; check whether other windows are affected.
- Cloudiness that will not wipe away: If both sides are clean, the haze may be between the panes.
- Wet frame or sill after rain: Look for water around the window-wall junction, especially if the glass is dry.
- Recurring particles or insect remains: Record where they appear and whether they return, but do not identify a pest from one mark.
Condensation on the inside of the glass
Moist indoor air can condense on cold window glass. Wiping away water protects the sill and frame from prolonged wetting, but it does not address the moisture source. Constantine Anest, owner of Ethos Roofing and Restoration, warns: “If you don’t wipe it away, water can run down onto the frame and sill, and over time, that moisture can damage the finish and lead to mold.”

What to check
- Notice whether condensation appears on several windows or repeatedly on just one.
- Measure indoor relative humidity with a digital hygrometer or humidity meter. The tool can show humidity, but cannot determine whether a window leaks or has a damaged seal.
- Check that kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans are working and being used to remove moisture.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) advises keeping indoor relative humidity below 60 percent, ideally between 30 and 50 percent. If one window remains wet while others are dry, inspect that window and its surroundings; weatherstripping or installation issues are possibilities, not conclusions from condensation alone. Dry wet surfaces and investigate the moisture source rather than relying on wiping as a fix. EPA guidance on moisture and mold explains that cold window surfaces can collect condensation and recommends moisture control.

Small piles that look like sawdust
Particles that reappear near a wood frame or sill may be a reason to inspect the area more closely. Possible sources include carpenter ants, wood-boring beetles, or carpenter bees, but the particles alone do not identify a pest. Anest says: “If small piles of sawdust keep reappearing near a window frame or sill even after you clean them up, then carpenter ants, wood-boring beetles, or even carpenter bees may be damaging the wood.”
What to do
- Note the exact location and whether the material returns after you remove it.
- Look for nearby holes or visible damage without assuming that either proves a particular pest.
- If the debris keeps returning or the wood appears damaged, ask a qualified pest professional to identify the source.
Cloudiness that remains after cleaning both sides
If a cloudy patch remains after you clean the inside and outside surfaces, it may be between the panes of insulated glass rather than on the surface. Corbett Proctor, owner of Window World Panama City, says: “If you’ve cleaned the inside and outside of a window and that cloudy patch is still staring back at you, it’s probably between the panes.” Persistent haze warrants assessment by a window professional. Ask whether the glass unit needs attention; this clue does not establish that the entire window must be replaced.

Mold, mildew, or dark staining around the frame
Staining or visible mold around a window can indicate a moisture problem, but it does not by itself reveal where water is coming from. Check whether the frame or sill becomes wet after rain while the glass stays dry. Anest advises: “See whether condensation is running down the glass onto those areas. If they’re wet after it rains but the glass is dry, water may be getting in where the window meets the wall,”
Find and address the water source as well as cleaning affected material. The EPA cautions that mold can return if cleanup is done without fixing the underlying water problem. It says that, in most cases, homeowners can handle cleanup of a moldy area under about 10 square feet by following its guidance. For substantial water damage or mold growth over about 10 square feet, consult the EPA’s further remediation guidance. The figure is general EPA guidance, not a universal legal threshold; the actual damage and occupants’ circumstances matter. EPA mold cleanup guidance covers cleanup and when to seek further help. EPA does not recommend routine use of a biocide such as chlorine bleach during mold cleanup. For leaks or spills, dry wet or damp materials within 24–48 hours; EPA says mold will not grow in most cases when this is done, but the interval is not a guarantee in every circumstance.

Wings, droppings, egg sacs, or webs
Discarded wings, mud tubes, dark specks, egg sacs, or multiple webs may justify a closer look around the window and in the room. A single sign is not enough to diagnose termites, cockroaches, or another pest. Nicole Carpenter, pest control professional and president of Black Pest Prevention, says: “Many pests leave their ‘marks’ on windows, so checking windows is one of the first things to do when it comes to pest infestation,”
Record what you see and where it appears. If signs recur, or multiple webs or egg sacs are present, ask a pest professional to inspect and identify the evidence rather than relying on a photo or a guess.

When to bring in a professional
Arrange an assessment when a condition keeps returning, the source is unclear, or the visible damage is beyond routine cleanup. A window professional can assess persistent between-pane haze or a suspected window problem; a pest professional can identify recurring debris or insect signs; and substantial mold or water damage may call for remediation guidance. The useful first step is to describe what returns, where it appears, and whether it follows rain or indoor moisture—not to treat one visual clue as proof.
