A faulty capacitor may be swollen, leaking, cracked, burned, unusually hot, or physically ruptured—but it may also look completely normal. Electrical failure can mean reduced capacitance, high equivalent series resistance (ESR), excessive leakage, an open circuit, a short circuit, or an intermittent fault that appears only when the equipment is hot or under load.
Capacitors in HVAC systems, motors, power supplies, control boards, inverters, microwaves, CRT displays, and capacitor banks can retain a dangerous charge after shutdown. Visual inspection is appropriate for basic screening, but high-voltage and mains-powered equipment should be tested, discharged, and repaired only by a suitably trained person following the equipment maker’s procedure and applicable lockout/tagout requirements.

What a capacitor does
A capacitor stores electrical charge and releases energy in a controlled way. Depending on its position in a circuit, it may smooth and filter DC power, suppress electrical noise, couple or block signals, control timing and frequency, help a motor start or run, or correct power factor in an industrial electrical system.
That is why the same symptom can have different meanings. A failed electrolytic capacitor on a circuit board may cause ripple or random resets; a failed motor capacitor may leave a motor humming without starting; and a failed capacitor-bank section may cause abnormal heat or reduced power-factor correction.

The most common signs of a bad capacitor
Visible damage
- A bulging or domed aluminum electrolytic can.
- A split, lifted, or opened pressure vent.
- Leaked electrolyte, oil, or other fluid.
- A cracked, chipped, distorted, or ruptured case.
- Burn marks, soot, or severe discoloration.
- Corrosion around leads, terminals, or seals.
- Discolored nearby circuit-board material or wiring.
- Lifted PCB pads, damaged solder joints, or loose terminals.
- A capacitor that has moved, detached, or expelled material from its top.
A leaking, bulging, cracked, burned, or ruptured capacitor should normally be treated as failed and removed from service or professionally evaluated. Do not energize equipment to see whether the capacitor becomes hot.
Visual inspection is not conclusive. A capacitor can have high ESR, low capacitance, excessive leakage, internal arcing, or a temperature-dependent fault without showing any external defect. The FDA’s capacitor technical guide describes electrical, thermal, mechanical, moisture-related, and connection failures that may not produce an obvious bulge.
Heat, smell, and sound
Warning signs can include a burning electrical or rubber-like smell, hissing, clicking, buzzing, popping, or a capacitor that is substantially hotter than comparable components. Repeated fuse or breaker operation can also indicate a shorted capacitor.

In an HVAC system, for example, a burning smell may come from the compressor, fan motor, wiring, or a loose connection rather than the capacitor. Stop using the equipment and arrange professional inspection if there is smoke, arcing, a strong burning smell, or repeated protective-device operation.
Equipment symptoms
- The equipment will not start or repeatedly shuts down.
- Random resets, display flicker, or unstable operation.
- Excessive electrical ripple, audio hum, or noise.
- A motor hums but does not start.
- A motor starts slowly, has weak starting torque, or needs manual assistance.
- A motor trips its overload or overheats.
- An HVAC outdoor fan does not start or the compressor clicks or hums without running.
- A fuse blows or a breaker trips repeatedly.
- Power-factor-correction equipment drops out or shows abnormal heating.
- The equipment works when cold but fails after warming up.
Every one of these symptoms has other possible causes, including incorrect supply voltage, loose or oxidized terminals, a failed fuse, relay, contactor, centrifugal or thermal switch, damaged wiring, a failed motor winding, a jammed load, poor ventilation, a blocked HVAC fan, a compressor problem, harmonics, or a faulty control board.

Symptoms by application
Circuit boards and power supplies
Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are widely used for power-supply filtering and DC motor controls. Failure may cause excessive ripple, unstable DC voltage, startup failure, display flicker, audio hum, random resets, or intermittent shutdowns. High ESR is a common concern: the capacitor may measure near its marked capacitance while producing excessive ripple voltage, internal heating, and unreliable operation.
Tantalum capacitors often fail as shorts and may crack, burn, or char with little visible swelling. Ceramic capacitors may crack, chip, lose a termination, become intermittent, or short after mechanical or thermal stress. Film capacitors may show a cracked or deformed case, burn damage, oil leakage in oil-filled designs, an open circuit, or insulation breakdown. None of these types should be judged solely by appearance.
Motors, fans, and pumps
In a single-phase capacitor motor, a deteriorated or open capacitor can reduce starting torque, cause humming without startup, slow acceleration, overload trips, and motor overheating. A shorted capacitor can draw excessive current and may damage or burn a motor winding.
Before blaming the capacitor, check the equipment’s service information and consider supply voltage, mechanical obstruction, bearings, switching components, wiring, and the motor winding. The symptom identifies a troubleshooting path—not a confirmed component fault.
HVAC systems
HVAC equipment commonly uses start capacitors, run capacitors, and dual-run capacitors. A dual-run unit contains separate sections, often for the compressor and outdoor fan. Labels normally state capacitance in microfarads, shown as µF or MFD, together with a voltage rating. Trane notes that many HVAC capacitors fall approximately within 5–80 MFD, but the installed capacitor’s label and the equipment manufacturer’s specification control.

Possible capacitor-related symptoms include an outdoor fan that will not spin, a compressor that hums or clicks without starting, failure to start, poor cooling or heating, and a burning odor. These symptoms can also result from a failed motor, compressor, contactor, wiring, power supply, or control board. Trane advises that HVAC capacitor testing, discharge, and replacement be performed by a trained professional. Its consumer guidance gives an approximate replacement range of $100–$400, but actual cost varies by location, equipment, labor, and service-call charges. Use the Trane dealer locator or a qualified local HVAC contractor rather than opening a live outdoor unit.

In capacitor banks and power-factor-correction equipment, clues may include blown fuses, uneven phase current, abnormal heat, bulging or leaking cans, damaged terminals, and reduced power-factor correction. Harmonic currents, overvoltage, poor connections, and excessive temperature can accelerate failure.
Thermal imaging can help qualified maintenance personnel locate abnormal heating, loose connections, blown-fuse conditions, or an overheating bank. Fluke gives approximately 20°C above ambient as an example field guideline for a sound connection in a particular context; it is not a universal capacitor temperature limit. External inspection of energized equipment requires appropriate arc-flash precautions, and opening or testing the enclosure requires qualified personnel.
Capacitor types and their characteristic failure clues
| Type | Common uses | Possible failure clues |
|---|---|---|
| Aluminum electrolytic | Power supplies, audio equipment, appliances, control boards | Bulging, venting, electrolyte residue, corrosion, low capacitance, high ESR, leakage, or an open circuit |
| Tantalum | Compact electronic circuits | Short circuit, cracking, burning, or charring with little swelling |
| Ceramic | Noise suppression, filtering, timing, high-frequency circuits | Cracks, chips, detached terminations, intermittent operation, or an internal short |
| Film | AC applications, suppression, timing, motor and power circuits | Cracked or deformed case, oil leakage in some designs, burn marks, open circuit, or insulation breakdown |
| Motor or HVAC | Starting and running single-phase motors | Humming, failure to start, weak torque, overload trips, fan failure, or compressor startup problems |
Many electrolytic capacitors are polarized. AC motor, film, ceramic, and many other capacitors are non-polarized. Follow the component markings and schematic; never assume that all capacitors have a positive and negative connection.
How to test a capacitor safely
Safety warning: Capacitors can retain a potentially lethal charge after equipment is switched off. Do not use this general procedure for HVAC units, mains equipment, capacitor banks, motor drives, inverters, UPS systems, microwaves, CRT displays, high-voltage power supplies, or any equipment you are not trained to service. Use the manufacturer’s service procedure, correctly rated instruments, and lockout/tagout controls.

1. Identify the application and markings
Record the capacitance, tolerance, rated voltage, polarity, temperature rating, frequency or AC rating, start/run designation, and safety classification. A capacitor on an isolated low-voltage circuit is a different risk from one connected to mains or a high-energy DC bus.
2. De-energize and verify
- Switch off and isolate the equipment.
- Follow the service instructions and prevent unexpected re-energization.
- Verify the absence of voltage with an appropriately rated meter.
- Discharge the capacitor using the manufacturer’s procedure or a properly designed, correctly rated discharge tool.
- Confirm that the terminals are at a safe voltage before touching or measuring.
- Remove at least one lead, or remove the capacitor entirely, before a capacitance test.
Fluke’s capacitance-measurement guidance likewise says the circuit must be powered off and discharged, and that the capacitor should be detached from the circuit to avoid misleading readings.
3. Inspect it without powering the equipment
Look for bulging, leakage, cracks, burn marks, corrosion, damaged terminals, and lifted solder pads. Any severe physical damage is sufficient reason to remove the component from service. Do not deliberately operate the equipment to observe heating or listen for venting.
4. Measure capacitance
- Set a suitable meter to capacitance mode.
- Observe polarity when testing a polarized capacitor.
- Connect the probes and allow the reading to stabilize.
- Compare the result with the marked value and the specified tolerance.
An overload display can mean the value is outside the meter’s range or that the capacitor is faulty; consult the meter manual. For a motor-capacitor example, Fluke uses an acceptance range within ±20% of the label value. That is not a universal tolerance: the capacitor or equipment manufacturer’s specification takes priority.

5. Use resistance testing only as a limited screen
A resistance or continuity test may reveal a near-short, a completely open component, or a charging response on some capacitor types. It cannot establish that the capacitor is healthy. A plausible charging response may coexist with high ESR, low capacitance, excessive leakage at operating voltage, temperature-dependent failure, or intermittent internal arcing.

- High Accuracy and low power consumption.
- Large LCD screen for easy reading.
- Massive measure range from 0.1pF to 20000uF.
- Suitable for digital analysis ,Choose capacitance, measure the unknown capacitance , Matching capacitance, Measurement cable and capacitance, etc.
6. Test ESR, leakage, insulation, or thermal behavior when necessary
An ESR meter is particularly useful for electrolytics in switching power supplies, computers, televisions, audio equipment, and control boards. Compare ESR with an appropriate reference for the capacitor’s capacitance, voltage, construction, temperature, and test frequency; there is no single universal “good ESR” number. The FDA explains that ESR is AC resistance at a given frequency and that ESR-related voltage drop can produce internal heating and shorten service life.
High-voltage and industrial capacitors may require DC leakage, insulation-resistance, dissipation-factor or power-factor, dielectric-withstand, controlled-charging, phase-current, or thermal testing. Fluke’s high-voltage capacitor guidance notes that abnormal charging behavior can indicate an open circuit or internal arcing and that unstable readings should be treated as suspicious.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What readings mean
- Capacitance below specification: The capacitor is suspect, although measurement method, temperature, tolerance, and circuit connection must be considered.
- Near-zero resistance: May indicate a short, but confirm that the capacitor is isolated and that the meter and component type are appropriate.
- Infinite resistance: May indicate an open capacitor, though meter behavior varies and does not replace a proper capacitance test.
- Normal capacitance with high ESR: The capacitor may still fail under ripple or load.
- Unstable or voltage-dependent readings: May indicate intermittent behavior, leakage, or internal arcing.
- Normal results but persistent equipment symptoms: Recheck the wider circuit rather than replacing parts at random.
Choosing a replacement capacitor
Do not select a replacement by physical size or microfarad value alone. Confirm all of the following:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Same capacitance and an acceptable tolerance.
- Equal or otherwise appropriately specified voltage rating.
- Correct polarity, if applicable.
- Correct AC or DC type and safety classification.
- Suitable temperature rating and ripple-current capability.
- Appropriate ESR and frequency characteristics.
- Correct start, run, or dual-run classification for a motor or HVAC system.
- Compatible terminal layout, lead spacing, mounting, and clearances.
- Required approvals and compatibility with the equipment manufacturer’s specifications.
A higher voltage rating may be acceptable in some circuits, but it is not an automatic approval. Physical fit, charging behavior, ESR, safety requirements, and the manufacturer’s instructions still matter. Never install a higher-µF capacitor simply because the equipment fails to start; excessive capacitance can damage motors or other circuitry.
For electrolytics, verify polarity before installation. For suppression capacitors, use the correct safety class. For HVAC and motor capacitors, match the marked µF/MFD value, voltage, terminal arrangement, and start/run function exactly.
When to call a professional
Use qualified service for HVAC systems, mains-powered equipment, capacitor banks, inverters, variable-frequency drives, UPS systems, microwaves, CRT displays, high-voltage power supplies, and any capacitor that remains charged after isolation. Professional help is also appropriate when the fault requires live testing, insulation or leakage testing, thermal imaging, arc-flash controls, or diagnosis of repeated capacitor failures.
Repeated failures usually indicate an underlying problem such as overvoltage, excessive ripple, harmonics, excessive temperature, poor ventilation, a loose connection, mechanical overload, moisture, reverse polarity, or a defective motor or control circuit. Replacing the capacitor without finding that cause may lead to another failure.
Why capacitors fail
Common causes include age-related electrolyte drying, excessive temperature, ripple current, voltage spikes, reverse polarity in polarized electrolytics, moisture ingress, vibration or shock, internal dielectric breakdown, failed welds or connections, poor sealing, loose terminals, and harmonic currents in power-factor-correction systems. Panasonic notes that overvoltage and excessive ripple can reduce capacitance in aluminum electrolytic capacitors. The FDA’s technical material also identifies dielectric breakdown, electrolyte leakage, thermal expansion, moisture, mechanical stress, and open connections as relevant failure mechanisms.
