Transport for London (TfL) confirmed the theft, which occurred in early September 2026, and said measures had been introduced to prevent further incidents.
What happened at Culling Road
The Culling Road shaft was stripped of nearly all its green, patinated copper bands during a scrap-metal theft in early September 2026. The incident was reported to police, and TfL has confirmed that protective measures are now in place. Public information available so far does not state whether anyone has been arrested or charged, how much copper was removed, its resale value, or when the architectural cladding will be reinstated.

The theft was reported by The Architects’ Journal on 15 October 2026. Ian Ritchie, founder of ritchie*studio, responded: “The Culling Road Vent and Escape Shaft has clearly been recognised as one by the criminal urban underworld as well.” Ritchie and other observers had previously described the Jubilee Line structures as “hidden gems”.
Why the shaft is more than a utility enclosure
Culling Road is one of six ventilation and escape shafts created for the Jubilee Line Extension between London Bridge and Canary Wharf. Ian Ritchie Architects conceived the group as a family of sculptural objects expressing air movement, planting, escape and access rather than hiding standard railway equipment behind conventional louvres.

Each shaft responds to its setting, with a palette that includes copper, basalt-aggregate concrete, creamy cast concrete, stainless woven mesh and painted steel. Their functions vary across ventilation, emergency escape and related railway infrastructure, while their surfaces and forms are deliberately site-specific.
How the Culling Road cladding was built
The copper was a specified architectural system, not loose decorative sheet. Ritchie Studio describes 2 mm C106 half-hard copper sheet assembled into panels on stainless-steel horizontal rails. Those rails were fixed to galvanised-steel supports, and the copper was patinated on site to produce its characteristic green appearance.

Photographs and descriptions of the original work show thick horizontal bands wrapped around a steel support structure. Removing those bands therefore changes the shaft’s appearance and exposes parts of the engineered assembly that were intended to remain behind the copper skin.

Copper’s value has risen sharply since the Jubilee Line structures were built. The Architects’ Journal reported that copper was worth about 60 pence per pound when the vents were constructed, compared with more than £5 per pound in 2026. Those figures provide context for the theft but do not establish the quantity or cash value of the material taken from Culling Road.

The same report cited a metals4U study saying copper thefts accounted for one in five metal thefts, compared with about one in ten in 2023. These theft-rate figures are reported through The Architects’ Journal; the underlying study should be consulted for its methodology and coverage before drawing wider conclusions.
What is known about repairs and security
TfL says measures have been put in place to prevent further incidents. It has not publicly confirmed a completion date for replacing the copper bands, whether the replacement will match the original patinated C106 system, or whether the support rails and galvanised steel suffered damage during removal.

Any repair will need to address more than colour. The original design depended on repeated horizontal bands, stainless rails and a carefully developed patina. Reinstatement choices could affect the shaft’s visual character, maintenance requirements and resistance to future theft.

Why the loss matters architecturally
The Jubilee Line Extension shafts were designed as public works that make infrastructure legible and distinctive. Their material differences—copper at Culling Road alongside concrete, mesh and painted steel elsewhere—help each site respond to its surroundings while belonging to the same family.

Stripping Culling Road bare removes the visible material that carried much of that design intent. The incident also highlights a practical tension in civic architecture: valuable metals can give a structure durability and identity, while making it attractive to thieves decades after completion.
Where to learn more about the shaft
Open City’s 23 April 2026 episode, “Deconstructed: Culling Road Ventilation Shaft – Adventurous Vents,” discusses the structure with author Judy Ovens and identifies the book Adventurous Vents: A Journey through the Ventilation Shafts of Britain. The episode places Culling Road within the wider history of Britain’s ventilation infrastructure.
For now, the established facts are limited to the theft, TfL’s confirmation and its statement that preventive measures have been taken. Police action, the amount of copper removed and the timetable for restoration remain unreported.
