A signed detour is planned. The closure affects a downtown surface street—not the I-65 corridor, which reopened to traffic in July but remains under construction.
When does Gray Street close, and when is it expected to reopen?
The October 2 project notice anticipated closing Gray Street under I-65 early Monday, October 5, with reopening by late November. The dates are the project’s published expectation, not a guarantee; check the I-65 Central Corridor project updates for the latest status before traveling. A signed detour is to be in place.
How should drivers reach JCTC?
The project notice gives guidance for drivers exiting northbound I-65 at Broadway. If you are headed to a LOUMED destination, including JCTC, follow the signed detour and current directions. For drivers not going to LOUMED, the notice directs them east on Broadway; Clay Street can be used to travel north into downtown. The notice does not specify a dedicated student-parking route.
Drivers whose destinations are outside the downtown medical district are advised to use alternate routes and avoid nearby sections of Broadway, Brook, Chestnut, Floyd, Gray, Jacob, Muhammad Ali Boulevard and Preston during construction. This is a caution about the affected nearby sections, not an announcement that every named street is closed.

- Going to JCTC or another LOUMED destination: Follow signed detours and check live directions before setting out.
- Passing through downtown to another destination: Use an alternate route where practical and avoid the nearby construction-affected sections identified in the notice.
- Walking: The October 2 notice gives vehicle directions, not a specific pedestrian route. Follow posted signs and use current campus guidance rather than assuming a vehicle detour is also a safe walking route.
The project notice says mapping apps may provide the best route at the time of travel and offers project updates and email or text alerts. A route that works one day may change with construction; the dated notice and signs on site should take precedence over a static route description.
Why are some JCTC students frustrated?
Local reporting captured individual experiences, not a survey of students. Timothy Rutledge, a JCTC student who commutes from Jeffersonville, told WDRB/WAVE that the commute was already long and that traffic and the way it was directed made reaching the parking garage difficult. “It was horrible. The commute here is long for me already because I live in Jeffersonville, Indiana,” he said.

Jael Durham described a different disruption: construction noise during a lecture. “It’s just really, really loud in my classes,” she told WDRB/WAVE. Her comment describes her experience; it does not establish conditions in every JCTC classroom.
Is I-65 still closed?
No. The Gray Street notice concerns a surface street beneath the interstate. Kentucky announced that the five-mile section of I-65 between I-264 and downtown reopened shortly after 12:01 a.m. July 29, 2026—three days ahead of schedule. The reopening restored I-65 traffic, but the state said construction and reduced-capacity conditions continued.

How the Gray Street closure fits the larger project
The July reopening followed an initial full-closure phase that replaced three I-65 bridges: those over Kentucky Street/Brook Street, Hill Street/CSX Railroad/Burnett Avenue, and Bradley Avenue. At the time of the announcement, work on those bridges was expected to finish in March 2027. The broader project also identified six additional bridges for later phases, including the grouping over Jacob Street, Broadway and Gray Street. The July schedule and scope may have changed since that announcement, so it should not be treated as the current street-closure schedule.
The distinction matters for travelers: reopening the interstate did not mean the surrounding downtown construction ended. The October Gray Street closure is a later, local-access impact within that continuing corridor work.

What campus guidance says
The University of Louisville says its campuses remain open and classes continue, while warning that the I-65 project can increase surface-street traffic and change walking routes around the Health Sciences Center. Its guidance is to allow extra travel time, follow posted detours and check current updates. That is general university advice; use the I-65 project notice for the specific Gray Street closure.
