The I-10 Katy Freeway-Downtown HOV connector is scheduled to close at 9 p.m. Friday, October 9, 2026, for demolition and reconstruction of its elevated structure. The eastbound connection is estimated to reopen in fall 2027; the westbound connection is estimated to reopen in summer 2028. Both dates may change as construction progresses.
When does the connector close?
Houston TranStar lists the HOV facility between Franklin Street and Studemont Street as closed beginning at 9 p.m. Friday, October 9, 2026, until further notice. The work is part of TxDOT’s I-10 White Oak Bayou project and involves demolishing the existing elevated HOV structure and building a replacement. Check TranStar’s construction report for current closure information.
What detours should drivers use?
- Eastbound I-10 drivers headed to downtown: Stay on the freeway and take the Smith Street exit.
- Drivers on Franklin Street seeking westbound I-10 access: Use Louisiana Street.
These are the detours listed by Houston TranStar. Conditions and notices can change, so check the live construction report before traveling.

TxDOT’s reported windows are estimates, not guaranteed completion dates. The directional connections have different target seasons; construction progress may affect either schedule. The project is described as TxDOT’s $413 million I-10 White Oak Bayou elevation project, according to the Houston Chronicle’s October 6, 2026 report.

What happens to METRO bus service?
METRO buses that use the connector on the U.S. 290 and I-10 Katy corridors are expected to be rerouted. The affected routes identified in the report are 161 Wilcrest Express and 162 Memorial Express. METRO plans to post service notices at affected stops and Park & Ride locations, including the Northwest Transit Center. Because these are planned changes rather than a permanent schedule, review the reported bus impacts and confirm your route’s current detour with METRO before departing.
