HS2’s Wendover green tunnel has reached a major construction milestone: the two halves of its central structure were joined after the final concrete segment was lifted into place on Monday, 5 October 2026. The central structure is complete, but the tunnel and its surrounding works are not. Portal construction, the floor slab, internal fitout, backfilling, road realignment and landscaping remain.
What is the Wendover green tunnel?
The Wendover green tunnel is a cut-and-cover railway structure in a cutting beside the A413, west of Wendover in Buckinghamshire. HS2 describes it as about one mile (1.4 km) long. It is formed from 2,740 precast concrete segments arranged in an M shape, with separate halves for northbound and southbound trains. As each section is built, earth is placed over it so the railway can be integrated into the landscape. HS2 Ltd’s announcement of 6 October 2026 explains the project’s design and latest milestone.
Unlike a deep-bored tunnel, this structure is built in an excavated cutting: the concrete sections are assembled at the surface level of the works and then covered. The earth covering and landscaping are intended to help the railway blend into its surroundings. HS2 Project Manager Umesh Gorasia said the completed tunnel is also intended to “dramatically reduce disruption from passing trains”; that is a project-side description of the design’s purpose, not a reported post-completion measurement.
Has the Wendover tunnel been completed?
No. The milestone announced on 6 October 2026 is the joining of the two halves of the central structure, not completion of the full tunnel or site works. EKFB says it installed the first segment in spring 2025 and lifted more than 2,000 segments in less than 18 months to complete the central structure. Most segments were lifted into place by crane. Beneath the temporary Ellesborough Road bridge, a self-propelled modular transporter (SPMT) lifted beams from underneath and positioned them. EKFB’s contractor update describes that construction work.

What happens next at the Wendover green tunnel?
HS2 says work remains at both portals, along with construction of the floor slab and internal fitout. Backfilling is in progress. Ellesborough Road, which links Wendover in the direction of Princes Risborough, currently crosses the works on a temporary bridge; the road will ultimately be realigned over the tunnel, followed by landscaping. The 6 October announcement does not give a final completion date for the Wendover tunnel.
How does Wendover fit into HS2’s wider tunnel programme?
HS2 describes five green tunnels between London and Birmingham. Wendover is one of five shallower cut-and-cover tunnels; the others named by HS2 are Chipping Warden, Greatworth, Burton Green and Copthall. HS2’s announcement also gives project-wide prospective figures of about 65 miles (105 km) of tunnels to be built between London and the West Midlands and 130 million tonnes of earth to be excavated. Those are HS2’s estimates or plans for the wider project, not measured totals for Wendover or claims that the work is already complete.

EKFB is HS2’s main works contractor for the central section through Buckinghamshire and into South Warwickshire. It is a joint venture of Eiffage, Kier, Ferrovial Construction and BAM Nuttall.
