Howard Tellepsen Jr. received the Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors’ inaugural Odyssey Award at Phoenix RISE–Houston on September 24, 2026. The luncheon in Houston recognized his decades of leadership, philanthropy, advocacy and service to people affected by burn injury. Tellepsen, chairman of Houston-based Tellepsen Corporation, became a burn survivor after a home furnace explosion in 1969. Phoenix Society says his recovery experience shaped a lifetime of work supporting other survivors and advancing its mission.

A recovery that shaped his public service
In 1969, a furnace explosion at his home left Tellepsen with extensive burns. Construction Citizen reported in 2026 that more than half of his body was burned, including 30% third-degree burns. The publication also reported that he underwent 20 skin-grafting surgeries and spent three months in the hospital. Those figures are from Construction Citizen’s account of his recovery.
A career rooted in Houston
Tellepsen is chairman of Tellepsen Corporation, a fourth-generation, family-owned Houston construction company operating since 1909. His biography also lists a Bachelor of Civil Engineering degree from Georgia Tech and the university’s 2012 Alumni Distinguished Service Award. His civic and health-related board service has included CHI St. Luke’s Health, the YMCA of Greater Houston and the Sam Houston Area Council of the Boy Scouts.

Kechi Okwuchi received the 2026 Phoenix RISE Champion Award. Okwuchi is a burn survivor, singer, author, motivational speaker and advocate who survived the 2005 Sosoliso Airlines Flight 1145 crash in Nigeria.
