beam-to-beam connection

How Wood Beams Connect: A Video Guide to Bearing, Hangers, and Concealed Details

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wood beams meet in three common ways: one beam bears on a support or another beam, a metal hanger carries the supported member, or a concealed connector transfers forces inside the joint. Each arrangement creates a different load path. The connection that looks neatest is not automatically the safest or strongest; loads, timber species and grade, member dimensions, fasteners, moisture movement, and exposure all have to be checked together.

This guide explains what a beam-to-beam connection is, what the main details are intended to do, and how to use video training without mistaking a general demonstration for project approval. It applies to ordinary wood framing as an overview, while calling out where guidance from APA—The Engineered Wood Association is specifically about glulam (glued laminated timber).

What a beam-to-beam connection must accomplish

A beam connection is a structural detail, not merely a way to align two pieces of wood. The joint must provide a continuous, understandable path for the forces entering the supported beam. Depending on the framing geometry, that path may run through direct bearing, a hanger seat, bolts or screws, plates, or a concealed steel component before reaching the supporting beam, post, wall, or foundation.

APA—The Engineered Wood Association states in its Glulam Connection Details construction guide: “Proper connection details are critical to the structural performance and serviceability of any timber-framed structure.” That statement is particularly important at a beam intersection, where a large reaction can be concentrated in a small area.

  • Gravity transfer: reactions from joists, rafters, floors, or roofs must reach the supporting member without crushing the wood or overstressing a fastener group.
  • Stability: the detail may need to restrain rotation, lateral movement, or uplift, not just carry downward weight.
  • Serviceability: deflection, vibration, squeaks, splitting, and long-term movement can make a technically adequate-looking joint perform poorly.
  • Durability: moisture, treated timber chemicals, and outdoor exposure can corrode a connector or alter the wood around it.

Because those requirements vary with the structure, a connector catalog listing is not a design approval. The selected model, fasteners, spacing, and installation must match the actual members and the locally adopted building code or engineered drawings.

Three ways wood beams commonly meet

1. Bearing or seating on a support

In a bearing detail, the supported beam rests on a ledge, post, wall, notch designed for the purpose, or another beam. Downward force is transferred through contact at the bearing surface rather than relying entirely on a metal connector. A properly proportioned seat can be simple and visually quiet, which is why it appears in many traditional and contemporary frames.

Bearing still requires design. The support must be wide and strong enough to prevent crushing, and the supported beam needs adequate end distance and lateral restraint. A notch or pocket that removes too much wood can weaken the member; a shallow seat can allow slipping or rotation. Where uplift, wind, seismic action, or reversing loads are possible, a separate tie or connector may be required even when gravity bearing is adequate.

2. Face-mounted or top-mounted hangers

A hanger wraps around or attaches to the supported beam and transfers its reaction through a steel seat, side plates, or both. Hangers are useful when a beam cannot be placed on top of its support, when the framing needs a consistent elevation, or when a connection must be installed after the supporting beam is in position.

The hanger’s published capacity depends on the exact product, wood species and grade, supported-member size, fastener type, fastener count, and installation geometry. Substituting ordinary screws for specified nails or structural fasteners can invalidate the rating. The supporting beam also needs enough edge distance and cross-section to receive the fasteners without splitting or localized failure.

3. Concealed beam-to-beam connectors

Concealed connectors place a steel plate, knife plate, or proprietary fitting inside slots or pockets in the beams. Once assembled, the hardware is largely hidden, producing a clean timber-to-timber appearance. This is common where exposed steel is undesirable or where a flush architectural finish matters.

Concealment does not remove structural demands. Cutting slots, drilling holes, or routing pockets changes the member’s effective section and must follow the connector’s design documents. The installer must maintain the specified tolerances, fastener pattern, and assembly sequence. A concealed detail that is difficult to inspect can also make future moisture damage or missing fasteners harder to detect.

Connection arrangement Typical load path Visible finish Design checks that commonly govern
Bearing or seating Beam reaction passes through a bearing surface into a wall, post, or supporting beam Often minimal hardware; seat or notch may be visible Bearing stress, seat length, crushing, rotation, uplift and lateral restraint
Face-mounted or other hanger Beam reaction enters a steel seat and side plates, then fasteners and the supporting member Hardware remains visible unless covered Model rating, specified fasteners, member dimensions, edge distance, splitting and corrosion
Concealed connector Internal plate or fitting and its fasteners transfer forces between members Mostly flush or hidden Slot or pocket geometry, tolerances, fastener schedule, eccentricity, inspection and moisture protection

These categories are alternatives, not interchangeable recipes. A hanger’s capacity cannot be assigned to a concealed fitting, and a bearing detail cannot be assumed to resist uplift simply because the beams touch.

Why the same-looking joint can require a different design

Loads and load combinations

Start with the forces at the joint: dead load from the structure itself, live load from occupants or storage, roof or snow load where applicable, wind uplift, seismic actions, and any concentrated reactions from posts, joists, or trusses. The governing case may not be the largest downward load. A connector that works in gravity may need additional provisions for uplift or lateral force.

Member material and dimensions

Solid-sawn dimensional lumber, glulam, laminated veneer lumber, and other engineered products do not have identical strength, grain orientation, or allowable connection behavior. Width, depth, end distance, side distance, and the location of knots or laminations affect the result. APA’s guide is written for glulam connection detailing; it should not be treated as a universal sizing manual for every two-by member or site-built beam.

Localized stress and grain-related failure

Connections concentrate force. APA identifies tension perpendicular to grain, localized stress concentrations, and connection eccentricity as key glulam detailing concerns. Tension perpendicular to grain can split wood across the grain even when the beam’s overall bending stress appears acceptable. Eccentricity can make a joint twist or pry away from its intended bearing line. These are reasons to use a designer’s detail rather than improvise extra holes or a deeper notch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Moisture movement and end-grain exposure

Wood expands and contracts as its moisture content changes. A tight interior joint can open, bind, or transfer force differently when the timber dries or absorbs moisture. End grain is especially vulnerable to water entry. Exterior beam ends, open decks, and unprotected pockets need a drainage and protection strategy as well as corrosion-compatible hardware.

Exposure and corrosion compatibility

For exterior work or pressure-treated wood, the connector coating and fasteners must be suitable for the exposure and treatment chemicals. Corrosion-protected or stainless-steel options may be required, but the correct choice depends on the manufacturer’s recommendations and the project environment. Do not mix a corrosion-resistant connector with unapproved fasteners and assume the assembly has the same durability.

How to evaluate a connection before construction

  1. Draw the framing geometry. Identify which beam supports which, where each reaction enters, the beam elevations, and whether the joint must resist uplift or lateral forces.
  2. Record the materials. Note species or engineered-product designation, grade, actual dimensions, treatment, moisture condition, and whether the members are new, existing, or exposed outdoors.
  3. Obtain the design actions. Use the project’s structural drawings or have a qualified designer determine reactions and load combinations. Do not infer capacity from beam appearance.
  4. Shortlist an arrangement. Decide whether direct bearing, a hanger, or a concealed connector suits the geometry, available installation access, inspection needs, and desired finish.
  5. Check the complete assembly. Verify the connector model, allowable loads, fastener type and length, hole or slot requirements, edge distances, member capacity, and any required blocking or reinforcement.
  6. Check the environment. Confirm coating or stainless-steel requirements for exterior, wet, coastal, or treated-wood conditions, and provide a way for water to drain rather than collect in a pocket.
  7. Verify the governing rules. Follow the locally adopted building code, permit requirements, and project-specific engineering. A code chapter from another edition or jurisdiction is background information, not authorization to build.
  8. Plan inspection and sequencing. Decide when fasteners, concealed plates, bearing surfaces, and protective measures will be visible and how they will be checked before the joint is closed.

Using a connecting wood beams video responsibly

Video is valuable for seeing terminology, framing geometry, and the difference between a visible hanger and a concealed beam-to-beam detail. It is not a substitute for the calculations and product instructions that establish a project’s capacity.

The City of Santa Clarita Building & Safety page presents a four-part residential wood-framed construction series. Its stated scope includes structural loads, vertical framing elements, lateral framing elements, connection details, and the California Building Code with city amendments. That makes it useful contextual viewing for someone learning how the pieces fit together. The published scope does not establish that a particular episode demonstrates a complete beam-to-beam installation, so treat it as training rather than a step-by-step approval for your joint.

When watching any connecting wood beams video, pause when the presenter reaches the connection and ask:

  • Is the example solid-sawn lumber, glulam, or another engineered product?
  • Which member is carrying the reaction, and where does that force go next?
  • Are the fasteners identified by type, diameter, length, and quantity?
  • Is the detail rated for gravity only, or also for uplift and lateral actions?
  • Does the exposure match the proposed location, including treated wood or outdoor moisture?
  • Are the cuts, pockets, and clearances tied to a manufacturer drawing or engineer’s detail?

If the video leaves any of those questions unanswered, use it to learn the vocabulary and ask a designer or building official for the missing project-specific information.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Choosing by appearance

A flush, hidden joint may look stronger than a visible hanger, but appearance says nothing about capacity or durability. Select the load path first, then the finish.

Using a catalog image as a universal detail

Manufacturer catalogs show families of connectors, not permission to combine any model with any beam. Confirm the exact table, fastener schedule, species assumptions, and installation orientation.

Changing fasteners in the field

Replacing specified nails or structural screws with whatever is available can reduce withdrawal or shear resistance and may create corrosion incompatibility. Stop and obtain an approved substitution from the designer or manufacturer.

Adding unplanned holes or notches

Extra drilling, routing, or notching can create stress concentrations, reduce section capacity, or trigger tension-perpendicular-to-grain failure. Follow the approved detail; do not enlarge a pocket to make misaligned parts fit.

Ignoring moisture at beam ends

Sealants alone do not solve standing water. Provide flashing, drainage, end-grain protection, and compatible hardware where the detail is exposed, as directed by the project documents.

Closing a concealed joint before inspection

Photograph and inspect concealed plates, fasteners, bearing surfaces, and required clearances before covering them. If a component is missing or inaccessible, obtain direction before proceeding.

What to ask a designer, supplier, or inspector

  • What reaction, uplift, and lateral forces must this joint resist?
  • Is the member glulam, solid-sawn, or another engineered product, and what grade or layup applies?
  • Which connector model and fasteners are approved for these actual dimensions?
  • Does the detail require blocking, reinforcement, a seat, bolts, or a specific installation sequence?
  • What corrosion category and treatment compatibility apply to this exposure?
  • How will moisture drain, and how will the concealed work be inspected?
  • Which edition of the locally adopted code governs the permit?

A clear answer to those questions turns a generic connection idea into a buildable detail. Without it, a beam-to-beam joint remains an unverified assumption, regardless of how convincing a video or catalog illustration appears.
