How Ultrasonic Joining Bonds Wood to Polymer Composite Without Glue

Ultrasonic joining uses frictional heat to bond wood to polymer composite without adhesive. The demonstrated joint was oak to carbon-fiber-reinforced polyamide, not bare wood to metal.

Ultrasonic joining uses high-frequency vibration to bond wood to a polymer or polymer-composite surface without adhesive. The peer-reviewed demonstration at the heart of the August 2024 TU Graz report joined oak to carbon-fiber-reinforced polyamide—not bare wood directly to metal. The report also covers a separate, non-ultrasonic method called AddJoining.

How does ultrasonic joining bond wood without glue?

A sonotrode presses against the wooden part and applies high-frequency vibration with low amplitude. At the interface, friction creates heat that melts the surface of the polymer or polymer-composite part. The softened polymer enters pores in the wood; when it cools and solidifies, the materials are held together by mechanical interlocking and adhesion forces.

The resulting bond is localized rather than spread across an adhesive layer. TU Graz describes ultrasonic joining as suited to large components and two-dimensional structures where precisely placed spot joints are useful. The process depends on a polymer surface that can melt under the joining conditions; it is not sound acting as glue between any two materials.

Can sound bond wood directly to metal?

The evidence described in the TU Graz report and the peer-reviewed paper does not establish a direct ultrasonic joint between bare wood and metal. The specific published ultrasonic demonstration joined oak with carbon-fiber-reinforced polyamide (PA6-15CF), a polymer composite. Although the broader TU Graz research included metals, that does not show that the wood-and-metal pair was joined by this sound-driven process.

What materials did the researchers actually join, and how strong was the joint?

Awais Awan and coauthors’ 2024 paper, “Ultrasonic joining of carbon-reinforced polyamide with oak wood for manufacturing sustainable hybrid structures,” tested oak wood with PA6-15CF. The researchers compared untextured wood surfaces with surfaces that had been laser-textured before joining.

Oak surface in the study Reported lap-shear strength
Untextured 4.1 ± 0.8 MPa
Laser-textured 9.2 ± 0.7 MPa

These are results for the paper’s material pair and joint configuration, not general strength ratings for wood joints, metal connections, or construction assemblies. They should not be used to size a structural connection without testing the intended materials, geometry, and loads.

How is AddJoining different?

AddJoining is the other adhesive-free method discussed by TU Graz, but it does not use sound. Instead, polymer composite is printed directly onto wood. The printed material penetrates the wood’s pores and forms a bond as it solidifies.

Method How the bond forms Geometry described by TU Graz Process equipment
Ultrasonic joining Vibration produces frictional heat, melting polymer at the interface so it enters wood pores and solidifies. Localized spot joints; large components and two-dimensional structures. Sonotrode applies vibration and pressure.
AddJoining Polymer composite is printed directly onto wood and penetrates its pores. Complicated three-dimensional geometries. Additive-manufacturing equipment.

What could the techniques be used for?

TU Graz names automotive, aircraft, and furniture manufacturing as possible application areas. The broader idea is to use wood in some hybrid structures in place of materials that are energy-intensive to produce or difficult to recycle. These are prospective applications, not evidence that the joints are already qualified for particular products or building uses.

TU Graz says the application of the techniques to wood is patent pending and that the researchers are interested in working with industry partners. The cited sources do not identify a consumer product or establish commercial availability. A generic ultrasonic plastic welder or desktop 3D printer should not be assumed to reproduce the research results.

What does the reported fracture suggest?

TU Graz postdoctoral researcher Gean Marcatto said: “After the joint fractured, we were able to find polymer in the wood pores and broken wood fibres in the polymer, which suggests that the fracture occurred in the wood and polymer, but not at the joint,” This observation supports the explanation that the bond involves penetration and interlocking at the interface. It does not establish performance for other materials or uses.
