To wrap a tree with lights, use a set labeled for outdoor use, plan the route and power before hanging it, and secure the cord without damaging its insulation or the tree. There is no reliable universal spacing or lights-per-foot rule: measure the tree and follow the light maker’s instructions for strand length and connections.
Choose lights made for outdoor use
Use string lights explicitly labeled or rated for outdoor use. Indoor-only lights are not designed for outdoor conditions, and being LED does not by itself make a set suitable for use outside. Check the product label and instructions for weather exposure, installation, and safety testing or certification. The U.S. Fire Administration and Massachusetts Department of Fire Services advise using lights intended for the setting.
Outdoor-rated LED string lights are a practical option, but choose by the actual strand length, plug and connection arrangement, and manufacturer’s limit on connected strands—not by an assumed universal bulb count or energy saving.
How many lights do you need for a tree?
There is no established standard for light spacing or lights per foot that applies to every tree and product. A narrow trunk, spreading limbs, and a full canopy require different amounts of light, as do a close spiral and a loose outline.

- Decide whether to spiral the trunk, follow main limbs, or outline part of the canopy.
- Measure the trunk and the portions of the tree you intend to light. Estimate the route the cord will take rather than measuring only straight-line height.
- Compare that planned route with the strand’s stated length and the manufacturer’s instructions. Account for where the power connection must reach without stretching the cord.
- If you need multiple strands, check the maker’s maximum number of connected strands and the product’s plug arrangement before buying or installing them.
Treat the result as an estimate for your project, not a formula that guarantees coverage. The U.S. Fire Administration’s instruction is: “Read manufacturer’s instructions for the number of light strands to connect.”
Inspect the lights before hanging them
Unplug the set and check the full length of every strand, including sockets, plugs, and connection points. Do not install a set with frayed or pinched wires, bare wire, cracked sockets, or loose connections. The U.S. Fire Administration recommends checking lights for damage; the Consumer Product Safety Commission also advises using lights in good condition.

Secure the lights without harming the tree or cord
Fasten the lights firmly enough to resist wind, but do not drive nails, tacks, or staples through a cord or use a holder that cuts, pinches, or abrades its insulation. Suitable hooks or insulated holders can help secure the strand; choose ones compatible with the product and use them in a way that does not injure the bark. Guidance from the National Park Service, the U.S. Fire Administration, and the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services emphasizes safe attachment and avoiding damaged cords.
Plan a safe route to power
Use an outdoor-rated extension cord only if the outlet location requires one, and make sure its rating suits the intended use and electrical load. Follow the light and extension-cord instructions; a specific cord length or gauge cannot be chosen safely without knowing the setup. Plug outdoor electric decorations into a GFCI-protected outdoor receptacle, and keep connections from becoming overloaded or exposed to conditions contrary to the product instructions. - Avoid overloading outlets, cords, or circuits.
- Do not use an indoor-rated extension cord outdoors.
- Follow local electrical requirements; requirements can vary by jurisdiction.
Turn the lights off and remove temporary displays after the season
Switch the lights off whenever you leave home or go to bed. After the season, bring temporary outdoor lights inside as directed by the product instructions. Before using them again, inspect the cords, plugs, sockets, and connections for damage.

In a 2025 survey reported by UL Standards & Engagement, 52% of holiday decorators said they daisy-chained power strips or extension cords, while 57% said they checked whether lighted decorations were tested and certified by an accredited organization. The same survey found that 83% inspected lights for damage, 84% inspected power cords, and 81% made sure outdoor lighted decorations were plugged into weatherproof outlets. These are survey findings from ULSE in 2025, not universal rates for all households.

The U.S. Fire Administration, attributing the figure to the National Fire Protection Association, says almost one-third of home Christmas tree fires are caused by electrical problems. The USFA page does not state a year for that figure.
