A 4-way switch lets one light be controlled from three or more locations. It is not installed by itself: one 4-way device sits between two 3-way switches, and additional 4-way switches can be added in the middle. The 4-way switch reroutes two traveler pairs so the end switches can either complete or interrupt the circuit.
The safe method is to identify every conductor by its function and by the markings on the exact device, not by wire color or screw position alone. Turn off the breaker, verify the circuit is dead, and stop for an electrician when the existing wiring does not match the device instructions.

A normal light controlled from one place uses a single-pole switch. A light controlled from two places uses two 3-way switches. To add a third control point, you insert a 4-way switch between those two 3-way switches. More than one 4-way switch can be installed when four, five or more control locations are required.
Leviton Product Support describes the purpose directly: “A 4-Way switch controls light(s) from three locations.” A common example is a room with three entrances, with one switch beside each entrance. The two switches at the ends are 3-way devices; the switch between them is 4-way.

The standard circuit order
The devices normally appear in this order:
- First 3-way switch at one end of the circuit.
- One or more 4-way switches in the middle.
- Second 3-way switch at the other end.
- The light fixture connected at the circuit end.
The 4-way device does not have the 3-way switch’s common terminal. Instead, it works with two traveler pairs. Internally it connects the incoming pair either straight through or crossed over to the outgoing pair. Changing the handle changes that routing. The two 3-way switches then determine whether a continuous path reaches the light.
How the switching action works
Two possible traveler routes
A mechanical 4-way switch has four terminals arranged as two pairs. In one handle position, each incoming traveler continues to the corresponding outgoing traveler. In the other position, the paths cross. Neither position is permanently “on” or “off”; the light’s state depends on the combined positions of both 3-way switches and every 4-way switch in the chain.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThat is why a light can change state from any location. Moving one handle changes the traveler route, which either completes the path to the lamp or breaks it. The handle positions will not necessarily look identical when the light is on, so do not try to assign a universal “up means on” rule.
Why a generic picture can mislead
Terminal colors, screw locations and wire colors are not universal identifiers. TP-Link cautions that wire colors may not reliably indicate function, and Zooz notes that screw positions and diagram colors can differ from an individual installation. A conductor that looks like a neutral, ground or traveler may have been repurposed or installed differently in an older circuit.

Use the markings on the exact replacement device and its instructions. Treat labels such as “in,” “out,” paired terminal colors or manufacturer-specific symbols as device-specific directions, not as a substitute for identifying the conductors in your box.
Safety checks before opening the box
Replacing a 4-way switch is a mains-wiring task. A diagram cannot make an unknown installation safe. Deako’s guidance is to turn off the breaker, identify conductors carefully, and turn power off again before wiring after temporarily identifying a live conductor.

- Verify that the light no longer operates from any switch.
- Use an approved voltage tester to check the conductors before touching them. Test the tester on a known live source before and after the check when your procedure requires it.
- Do not rely on the switch position, a wall label or a wire color as proof that power is off.
- Photograph and label conductors before disconnecting anything. Keep each identified pair together.
- Stop and call a qualified electrician if insulation is damaged, conductors are ungrounded or unexpectedly energized, multiple circuits are mixed, or the box is overcrowded.
Local electrical rules, permit requirements and accepted wiring methods depend on your jurisdiction and the existing installation. The instructions for a particular device do not replace those requirements.
How to identify an existing 4-way switch
When the switch is out of the wall, “four-way” describes its electrical function, not simply the number of screws visible. Use the device markings and a continuity check when the traveler paths are unclear.

1. De-energize and document
With the breaker off and the circuit verified dead, remove the wall plate and gently pull the device forward without disconnecting wires. Take clear photographs showing every terminal and the cable entering the box. Mark the two conductors that form one traveler pair and the two that form the other pair according to their original terminal grouping.
2. Read the device markings
A 4-way device commonly has four terminals arranged as two matching pairs, sometimes identified by two colors or by “input/output” markings. The exact arrangement varies. Do not assume that the upper two screws are one pair or that a particular color always means a traveler.

3. Trace the cables
Look at where each cable goes, but do not infer function solely from cable count. In a standard layout, the cable from one 3-way switch brings one traveler pair to the 4-way, and another cable carries the pair onward to the next device. Existing renovations may use a different route or splice arrangement.
4. Use a continuity tester if needed
Deako recommends a continuity check when traveler paths are unclear. Perform it only with the circuit de-energized and with conductors isolated as required by the tester instructions. Record which terminals are connected in each handle position. A continuity tester helps map the device; it does not replace safe isolation or electrical competence.

Replacing a standard mechanical 4-way switch
The following procedure applies only when the wiring has been positively identified and the replacement is approved for the circuit. If you cannot identify both traveler pairs, do not proceed by copying a generic drawing.
- Choose a matching device. Confirm that the replacement is a standard mechanical 4-way switch, not a single-pole or 3-way model. Check its terminal markings, electrical rating and installation instructions.
- Turn off and verify. Switch off the correct breaker, test the box, and keep the breaker off throughout the work.
- Transfer one conductor at a time. Move each wire to the corresponding terminal on the new device, preserving the two traveler pair groupings identified from the old device or continuity test. Do not use color alone to decide where a wire goes.
- Secure the connections. Tighten terminals to the manufacturer’s specified method. Keep bare grounding conductors secured and maintain the box’s required grounding and enclosure arrangements.
- Inspect before closing. Check for loose strands, insulation under a terminal, pinched conductors and a box that is too full for the device.
- Restore power and test every location. Operate the light from each 3-way and 4-way position. The light should change state from every control point without flicker, heat, buzzing or an intermittent response.
- De-energize again for corrections. If anything is wrong, switch off the breaker and verify the circuit is dead before reopening the box.
Adding more than one 4-way switch
For four or more control locations, add additional 4-way devices in the traveler path between the two end 3-way switches. Each added device receives one traveler pair and sends a routed pair onward. The first and last devices remain 3-way switches; every device between them is 4-way.
Every additional junction increases the number of connections that must be identified and secured. A fault at any point can make the light fail from all locations or behave inconsistently. Label each pair as you work, and use the manufacturer’s diagram for the exact device rather than assuming that all 4-way switches place their paired terminals in the same physical orientation.
Mechanical versus smart-switch replacements
A standard mechanical switch is usually the simplest replacement when the existing circuit already works. A smart product may add scheduling, remote control or automation, but only if its model-specific wiring supports the same multi-location arrangement.
| Question | Standard mechanical 4-way | Smart-switch replacement |
|---|---|---|
| Does it explicitly support a 4-way configuration? | Yes, when it is labeled and listed as a 4-way device. | Must be confirmed for the exact model; a general “multi-way” claim is not enough. |
| What wiring matters? | Two traveler pairs and the device’s terminal markings. | May require a neutral, a particular traveler arrangement, a companion device or a manufacturer-specific topology. |
| Can the existing switches remain? | Normally, the two end 3-way switches and any middle 4-way switches remain part of the mechanical circuit. | Some systems require replacing one or more devices; compatibility with the existing layout must be established first. |
| Will every location still control the light? | Yes, when wired correctly. | Only if the model’s instructions explicitly preserve control at every location. |
| How should installation be guided? | By the device markings and standard mechanical 4-way instructions. | By the exact model’s wiring diagram and compatibility list, not by a generic 4-way diagram. |
TP-Link states that its HS210 smart-switch setup has not been tested for the described 4-way scenario, so it should not be presented as a universal solution. Zooz publishes arrangements for particular models, but those instructions apply only to the specified hardware and wiring. Verify the exact model before buying or rewiring anything.
Troubleshooting a 4-way circuit
| Symptom | Likely area to inspect | Safe next action |
|---|---|---|
| Light never turns on after replacement | A traveler pair may be split, a terminal may be loose, or an end 3-way common connection may be wrong. | Turn off the breaker, verify dead, then compare each conductor with the device markings and the documented original arrangement. |
| Light works from some locations but not others | One 4-way pair may be on mismatched terminals, or a conductor may be loose. | De-energize and check that each incoming pair remains together and that every terminal is secure. |
| Switch handle feels hot, buzzes or crackles | Loose connection, overloaded or damaged device, or a fault in the circuit. | Turn off the breaker immediately and have the installation inspected; do not continue operating it. |
| Breaker trips when power is restored | A short, crossed conductor, damaged insulation or incorrect device connection. | Leave the breaker off and obtain professional diagnosis rather than repeatedly resetting it. |
| Wire colors do not match the diagram | The installation may use different cable routing, repurposed conductors or a different device orientation. | Follow the exact device instructions and identify function with safe testing; never force a color-based match. |
Final commissioning checklist
- Every conductor is identified by function, not appearance alone.
- The replacement is the correct 4-way model and its terminal markings were followed.
- The two traveler pairs remain grouped from one device to the next.
- Grounding, enclosure fit and conductor insulation are intact.
- The breaker is restored only after the box is closed and clear of tools.
- The light changes state from every control location.
- There is no heat, buzzing, crackling, flicker or unusual smell.
If any item fails, turn the breaker off and stop. A continuity tester can help map traveler paths, but it cannot make an unfamiliar or damaged installation safe. When the circuit differs from the manufacturer’s diagram, a licensed electrician is the reliable way to complete the work.
