A standard 3-way lighting circuit uses two 3-way switches to control one light from two locations. To add a third control location, install one 4-way switch between those two endpoint 3-way switches. The first and last 3-way switches have common and traveler terminals; the intermediate 4-way switch only changes the connections between the traveler pairs.

The diagrams below show the conventional arrangement, but terminal layouts differ by product. Turn off the circuit breaker or fuse, verify that every conductor is de-energized, and follow the exact instructions supplied with the switch. If the conductors or box wiring do not match the diagram, stop and have a qualified electrician identify the circuit.

What “3-way” and “4-way” mean

In North American wiring terminology, “3-way” and “4-way” describe the switching function, not the number of wires in a cable or the number of control points on the wall.

Two control locations: two 3-way switches

A conventional two-location circuit has a 3-way switch at each end. One endpoint receives the incoming line (hot) on its common terminal. The other endpoint sends its common terminal to the lighting load. Two traveler conductors run between the switches, allowing either switch to change the current path.

Three or more control locations: two 3-way switches plus 4-way switches

For three locations, place one 4-way switch between the two 3-way endpoints. The 4-way does not replace an endpoint 3-way; it either passes the traveler pairs straight through or crosses them. For four control locations, use two 4-way switches between the same two endpoint 3-way switches. In general, additional locations are created by adding 4-way switches in the traveler run, while the circuit always starts and ends with a 3-way switch.

Conventional 3-way circuit diagram

The following simplified diagram shows the electrical roles. It is a functional map, not a substitute for the terminal diagram supplied with your device.

Panel/source First endpoint Second endpoint Light/load
Line hot ───────────────► COMMON (dark screw) COMMON (dark screw) ─────────► switched hot
                                  │ │
                         Traveler 1 ────────────────────────────────┤
                         Traveler 2 ────────────────────────────────┤
  Neutral ───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────► neutral at light
Equipment grounding conductor ──► green ground screw/grounding means at each box and device

On the cited Leviton conventional device, the black (dark) screw is the common terminal, the two brass screws are the traveler terminals, and the green screw is equipment ground. Confirm those markings on the actual switch: manufacturers may use different terminal shapes, labels, or layouts.

The common at the line-side endpoint carries incoming hot. The common at the load-side endpoint carries switched hot to the light. Therefore, “common” does not always mean line; it identifies the common terminal of that particular 3-way switch.

Three-location diagram with a 4-way switch

Source/panel 3-way endpoint 4-way intermediate 3-way endpoint Load
Line hot ─────────────► COMMON
                         ├─ Traveler A ───────► input pair ───────────────► output pair ───────► traveler

Neutral ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────► light neutral
Grounding conductors ───► bonded to boxes/devices as required

A 4-way switch has two traveler terminals on one side and two on the other. Depending on the product, the terminals may be marked “in/out,” “1/2/3/4,” or by paired colors. Do not infer the pair arrangement from a generic picture; use the diagram printed on that exact switch. Reversing one pair can leave the circuit permanently on, permanently off, or operable only in certain switch combinations.

Identify terminals without relying on insulation color

Insulation colors are not a reliable way to identify common, line, load, or travelers. Cable practices, older installations, and previous repairs can use a conductor differently from what its color suggests. The Home Depot wiring guide and Leviton instructions both emphasize identifying the common before removing the old device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. With power off and verified dead, photograph the existing connections and the back of the switch.
  2. Locate the conductor on the old 3-way’s dark screw. Tag it “common” before loosening it. At one endpoint it may be line; at the other it may be the load conductor.
  3. Tag the two conductors on the brass screws as travelers. Keep each traveler pair together as it passes through the boxes.
  4. Identify the grounding conductor and any bonded metal box. A neutral normally continues through the box to the light in a conventional circuit; it is not a switched terminal on the standard 3-way diagram.

If the old switch has more conductors than shown, multiple cables spliced in the box, a reconfigured circuit, or no clearly identifiable common, do not guess. A non-contact tester can provide an initial check, but use an appropriate meter or approved tester according to its instructions and local practice.

Parts, ratings, and compatibility

Choose a device that is approved for the circuit’s voltage, load, conductor material, box, and intended function. A 3-way switch is not interchangeable with a single-pole switch, and a 4-way switch cannot serve as an endpoint.

Item Role What to verify
3-way switch Endpoint control; one common plus two travelers Voltage and amperage rating, terminal labels, approved wire material and gauge, grounding method
4-way switch Intermediate traveler switching Four traveler terminals, paired terminal markings, voltage/amperage rating, box depth and grounding requirements
Standard dimmer May replace a compatible endpoint or intermediate device only when its instructions permit Whether it is 3-way/4-way compatible, minimum load, lamp type, neutral requirement, and companion-device rules
Smart switch or remote Electronic control that may change the circuit topology Neutral requirement, line/load location, traveler or communication-wire requirements, companion compatibility, and hub/app setup
Commercial example Leviton CS320-2I 3-way switch Rated 20 A at 120/277 V according to the current product page accessed in 2026; this rating applies to that named model, not to household switches generally

The Leviton 5601/5603 installation sheet specifies copper or copper-clad conductors for those devices. Other switches may have different conductor or terminal requirements, so do not transfer that limitation to an unrelated model.

Safety and code requirements

Leviton’s 5601/5603 installation sheet gives this warning: “WARNING: TO AVOID FIRE, SHOCK, OR DEATH; TURN OFF POWER AT CIRCUIT BREAKER OR FUSE AND TEST THAT THE POWER IS OFF BEFORE WIRING!” Follow it literally. Turning a wall switch off does not isolate the box.

  • Switch off the correct breaker or remove the fuse, then prevent accidental re-energizing while you work.
  • Test every conductor in the box, including wires that appear to be neutral or unused. The Home Depot guide also calls for testing each wire after the breaker is turned off.
  • Use a tester that is rated and maintained for the task. Verify the tester on a known live source before and after checking the circuit.
  • Follow the device instructions and the electrical code enforced in your jurisdiction. Product instructions are not a replacement for local rules.
  • Do not work on damaged insulation, overheated terminals, loose aluminum conductors, water-damaged boxes, or crowded boxes without professional assessment.

How to wire a conventional two-location 3-way circuit

This procedure assumes an existing, identifiable circuit and a replacement device with the same function. New wiring, cable selection, box fill, and grounding must comply with local code.

  1. Map the circuit. Determine which box contains the incoming line and which contains the cable to the light. Mark the common conductor on each old 3-way and mark both travelers.
  2. De-energize and test. Turn off the breaker or fuse. Test all conductors and confirm the tester’s operation before and after the test.
  3. Connect the line-side 3-way. Put the tagged line conductor on the new switch’s common (dark) screw. Put the two tagged travelers on the two brass traveler screws. Connect the equipment grounding conductor to the green screw or approved grounding lead, and bond a metal box where required.
  4. Connect the load-side 3-way. Put the conductor going to the light on this switch’s common screw. Put the two travelers on the brass screws and connect grounding as specified. Do not move the neutral onto a switch terminal in this conventional arrangement.
  5. Inspect before closing. Ensure no bare copper is exposed beyond the terminal, screws are tight to the manufacturer’s torque guidance when provided, conductors are folded without strain, and the device’s ground is not omitted.
  6. Restore and test. Reinstall covers, restore power, and operate both switches through every combination. The light should respond from either location regardless of the other switch’s position.

How to insert a 4-way switch for a third location

  1. Choose the intermediate box. It must lie electrically between the two endpoint 3-way switches. The cable arriving from the first 3-way carries one traveler pair; the cable leaving toward the second 3-way carries the other pair.
  2. Keep the pairs identified. Label the two conductors from the first endpoint “pair A” and the two going to the second endpoint “pair B.” Do not use insulation color as the only identifier.
  3. Read the device diagram. Match pair A to one terminal pair and pair B to the other exactly as marked on the 4-way switch. Terminal orientation and markings vary by manufacturer.
  4. Ground the device and box. Connect grounding conductors using the method specified for the box and switch. A 4-way has no common terminal and should not receive the line or load conductor.
  5. Test all combinations. After restoring power, operate each of the three switches in every sequence. A correct circuit changes the light state from any location.

Symptoms, causes, and fixes

Symptom Likely cause Safe next action
Light works from one switch but not the other Common conductor on a traveler terminal, loose connection, or failed device De-energize, recheck the tagged common against the dark screw, and inspect terminations
Light is always on or always off after adding a 4-way Traveler pairs landed on the wrong 4-way terminal groups Turn power off and match each pair to the product’s in/out markings
Breaker trips immediately Shorted conductor, pinched insulation, miswired device, or damaged equipment Leave the breaker off and have the circuit diagnosed; do not repeatedly reset it
No power at either switch Wrong breaker, upstream disconnect, open splice, or unrelated fault Verify the circuit identity and call an electrician if the supply path is not clear
Smart switch will not operate Missing neutral, wrong endpoint location, incompatible companion, or model-specific wiring Use that model’s instructions; never copy conventional 3-way terminal mapping onto it
Warm, buzzing, discolored, or loose device Overload, loose terminal, incompatible load, or damaged device De-energize and replace or repair only after the cause is identified

Dimmer and smart-switch differences

Electronic controls can require a neutral in the switch box, a particular line/load location, a companion remote, or a dedicated communication traveler. Some are permitted only at one endpoint; others require a matching device at the other locations. A conventional diagram cannot establish those requirements. Read the exact installation sheet, confirm the lamp and load are compatible, and check whether the device is listed for multi-location use.

Leviton’s IPP0R-1LW multi-location instructions illustrate why this matters: the traveler identification and remote configuration are product-specific, and the instructions direct users to consult a qualified electrician when existing wiring does not resemble the shown configurations.

When to stop and call an electrician

Professional help is the prudent choice when the box contains unfamiliar modifications, multiple circuits, aluminum or damaged conductors, missing grounding, crowded splice compartments, evidence of overheating, or a wiring layout that cannot be matched confidently to the device diagram. Also stop if the circuit remains energized after the expected breaker is opened, if a breaker trips during testing, or if the installation would require changing cable routing or adding a neutral.

A diagram can show the intended current paths, but it cannot verify the condition of an existing installation. Use the manufacturer’s terminal labels, preserve the common/traveler identification, and apply the electrical rules in force where the work is performed.
