Check the potting mix rather than following a fixed schedule: when the surface is dry, water thoroughly at the soil line or briefly soak the pot from below, then let it drain. Keep the mix evenly moist, not waterlogged. This supports healthy mums, but extension guidance does not show that a watering trick can keep them blooming continuously all season.
How to water potted mums
- Check the mix. Feel the growing medium with a finger. If it is wet, wait; if the surface is dry, water. UGA Cooperative Extension recommends watering dry medium until water drains from the bottom of the pot: UGA’s mum-care guidance.
- Water the soil, not the flowers. Pour slowly at the plant’s base until excess runs through the drainage holes. Alternatively, set the pot in a bucket of water temporarily so the mix can absorb moisture from below.
- Let the pot drain. Empty runoff from its saucer or decorative cover. Missouri Extension advises keeping potted chrysanthemum soil consistently moist but not too wet, and not leaving pots sitting in saucers of water: Missouri Extension’s chrysanthemum guidance.
Mississippi State Extension horticulturist Dr. Gary Bachman writes, “Did you know that watering mums from the bottom is best?” The article also recommends directing water at the plant base and explains that wet leaves make fungal growth easier. This is practical care advice, not evidence from a controlled comparison showing that bottom watering extends flowering: Mississippi State Extension on watering mums.
Bottom watering or watering at the soil line?

Adjust care to the kind of mum
Florist mums indoors
For florist mums kept indoors, Iowa State Extension recommends frequent checks, watering when the soil surface is dry, and placing the plant in a brightly lit, cool location. Its stated indoor temperature range is 60–70°F. This advice is specific to florist mums indoors.

Garden mums outdoors
Garden mums need a consistent moisture supply, according to Iowa State Extension. Check the mix as weather and container conditions change rather than assuming an indoor florist mum’s care routine applies outdoors. Whichever type you have, avoid leaving its roots in standing runoff.

Missouri Extension says properly cared-for potted mums typically last several weeks to a month at home. That is general care guidance, not a guarantee for every plant or a measured result from a watering study. The reviewed extension guidance does not establish that bottom watering—or any single watering technique—keeps mums blooming all season.
