How to Verify the Origin and Listing of Fire-Rated Glass

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You cannot determine where a finished fire-rated glass assembly comes from by looking at a door brand, a glass brand or the words “fire-rated.” A project may involve one company making the base glass, another converting or laminating it, a fabricator cutting it, a distributor supplying it, a door or frame manufacturer, and an installer assembling the opening on site. Ask for the exact glazing product, its manufacturing location and its certification record, then check that the delivered glass, frame and installation match the listed assembly.

“Where it comes from” also needs a precise definition. It could mean where the raw glass was melted, where the fire-rated product was manufactured, where it was cut or laminated, or where the complete door, window or wall assembly was made. Those may be different places.

Why the country of origin is not obvious

Fire-rated glazing is often supplied separately from a fire door. UL guidance explains that the door manufacturer may provide the door while a glazing supplier, distributor or installer provides and fits the glass during project installation. The finished opening therefore has a supply chain rather than one automatic country of origin.

A label can identify the glazing manufacturer or certification holder without identifying where every component was made. Conversely, a door label may identify the listed door assembly but say nothing about the factory that produced the glazing installed in it. A distributor’s invoice may identify the seller, not the manufacturing plant. Treat each statement as applying only to the named product and supplier unless documentation shows otherwise.

No comprehensive public map establishes where all fire-rated glass is made or what percentage comes from any particular country. A company statement is useful for tracing one product, but it is not evidence of the whole market. For example, SAFTI FIRST describes its operation as vertically integrated and based in the United States, while also stating that other distributors import products from overseas. Those are company-specific claims; they do not establish the origin of competing products.

First identify which kind of “fire-rated” glass you need

“Fire-rated glass” is a broad trade phrase, not a single interchangeable specification. The key distinction is between fire-protection-rated and fire-resistance-rated glazing. They are tested for different purposes and are permitted in different applications.

Classification What the test addresses Typical standards and applications Important limitation
Fire-protection-rated glazing Restrains fire and, depending on the product, limits passage of flames, smoke and radiant heat for the listed duration. Fire-window tests under NFPA 257 or UL 9; fire-door tests under NFPA 252, UL 10B or UL 10C. May have restrictions on application, exposed area, temperature rise and maximum size. It is not automatically acceptable in a wall that requires fire-resistance performance.
Fire-resistance-rated glazing Forms part of a wall assembly and is evaluated for fire endurance plus heat-transfer control on the unexposed side. ASTM E119 or UL 263 wall-assembly evaluations. Must be used within the specific listed wall, framing and size configuration; a duration number alone does not authorize substitution into another assembly.

The National Glass Association’s 2023 technical primer describes standard fire-endurance tests lasting from 20 minutes to three hours, depending on the listing required. That range describes test durations in the primer, not a universal catalog of every product or an assurance that a particular duration is available in every market.

Read the classification marks, not just the minutes

UL’s category guidance uses different identifiers for different opening types. Fire-resistance-rated glazing in wall designs carries a W identifier with the rating in minutes. Fire-protection marks vary by use and can include OH for fire-window applications, or combinations such as D/H/NH and T/NT for door-glazing conditions. The meanings and required combinations are category-specific. Do not interpret a mark from one category as if it applied to another.

  • One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips

A “90-minute” statement without its category, test standard, temperature-rise information, size limit and frame conditions is incomplete. The opening’s code designation determines which characteristics must be present.

What to record from the glass and paperwork

Before accepting a shipment or approving a substitution, create a record that ties the physical pane to the certification and purchase documents. Photograph permanent markings before the glass is installed, because an edge mark or label may be inaccessible afterward.

  • Manufacturer name and, where shown, the product family, model or design number.
  • Certification mark and the category or application identifier, such as a W, OH, D, H, NH, T or NT designation.
  • Listed fire rating in minutes and any temperature-rise classification.
  • Applicable test standard or listing reference.
  • Pane dimensions, thickness, construction and any safety-glazing marking required for the location.
  • Frame, door or wall system identified in the approved design.
  • Delivery documents identifying the supplier, batch or order and any stated factory or country of origin.

If there is no permanent mark, the mark is illegible, or the paperwork identifies only a distributor, stop the approval process and request traceability from the supplier. Do not infer identity from color, wire pattern, thickness or appearance; different constructions can look alike while having different listings.

How to verify a listed product

Use the certification agency’s live database rather than relying on a photocopied certificate or an old product brochure. UL Product iQ allows searches by manufacturer, category, product, model and file or design number for UL-listed and certified products.

  1. Identify the opening. Write down whether the glass is for a fire door, fire window, sidelight, transom or rated wall. Note whether the opening is in a wall requiring fire resistance or an opening-protective assembly.
  2. Capture the marking. Photograph every label, etch and edge marking. Record the exact spelling of the manufacturer and all letters, numbers and symbols.
  3. Search the certification database. Search by manufacturer first, then narrow by category, product or model. If the label supplies a file or design number, use that exact identifier.
  4. Open the complete listing. Check the rating, test standard, classification mark, maximum dimensions, glazing orientation, framing materials and any temperature-rise or hose-stream conditions.
  5. Compare the delivered pane. Confirm that construction, thickness, dimensions and markings match the listing. A product that is listed in one size or frame is not automatically listed in another.
  6. Check the entire assembly. Verify the door or wall design, frame, glazing beads, stops, sealants, fasteners and hardware against the same approved configuration.
  7. Save the evidence. Keep a dated copy of the listing, supplier correspondence, photographs, packing slip and installation instructions in the project record.

A certification mark represents evaluation of representative product samples. UL states that it periodically audits production at manufacturing facilities; the guidance does not state a fixed audit interval. The mark is therefore evidence of certification under the agency’s program, not a substitute for checking that the installed product and configuration remain within the listing.

Verify the assembly, not just the pane

Fire performance belongs to the tested assembly. A compliant pane can become noncompliant when installed in an unlisted frame, with the wrong glazing bead, outside the permitted size, or in a door prepared differently from the tested design.

Doors and frames

Confirm the door, frame and glazing are approved together. Check the required preparation, glass thickness, setting blocks, stops, beads, fasteners and clearances. If a door and glazing arrive from separate companies, the installer must follow the applicable listing and installation instructions for the combined opening. UL guidance points to NFPA 80 where its requirements apply; the authority having jurisdiction may enforce a particular adopted edition.

Walls, windows and sidelights

For a rated wall, verify that the glazing is part of the listed wall design and that the frame, mullions, anchors and perimeter conditions match it. A fire-protection-rated window product cannot be substituted for fire-resistance-rated wall glazing merely because both carry the same number of minutes.

Size and field changes

Measure the visible and concealed dimensions against the listing. Cutting, drilling, edgework, replacing beads, changing sealants or adding films can invalidate the tested configuration unless the listing expressly permits it. Obtain written approval before modifying a certified product.

Ask for country-of-origin documentation that follows the order

Request a written statement for the specific product and project, not a general marketing claim. At minimum, ask the supplier to identify:

  • The factory where the fire-rated glazing product was manufactured.
  • The country where the base glass was produced, if different.
  • Any downstream location where the glass was cut, laminated, insulated, coated or otherwise fabricated.
  • The company that supplied the frame or door and the location where that component was made.
  • The order, batch or lot reference connecting those statements to the panes delivered to the project.
  • The certification record and listed configuration that cover the delivered product.

There is no single universal format for this documentation. A manufacturer certificate, commercial invoice, packing list, mill or factory declaration and traceability statement may each cover part of the chain. Read them together and ask the supplier to resolve inconsistent country names or product numbers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Be precise in project records: “glass converted in Country A from base glass melted in Country B” is more informative than “made in Country A.” If the supplier cannot establish a particular stage, record that limitation rather than filling the gap with an assumption.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Assuming the door brand identifies the glass

Why it fails: glazing may be supplied by a separate party. Correction: trace the pane’s own manufacturer, mark and listing, then check it against the door listing.

Choosing by the rating number alone

Why it fails: the same duration can appear in protection and resistance categories with different heat-transfer and application rules. Correction: verify the category mark, test standard, temperature-rise requirement and opening type.

Relying on a distributor’s country statement

Why it fails: the distributor may not be the factory and may describe only one processing stage. Correction: request the named manufacturing location and documentation for the specific order.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using a valid pane in an unlisted frame

Why it fails: the assembly’s fire performance depends on compatible framing, beads, hardware and installation. Correction: compare every component and dimension with the complete listing and instructions.

Ignoring the adopted code edition

Why it fails: technical primers and certification guidance may reference different editions from the code enforced on your project. Correction: confirm the locally adopted building and life-safety codes and the authority having jurisdiction’s interpretation before approval.

A practical approval checklist

  • Opening type and required protection or resistance classification are documented.
  • Manufacturer, product identifier, certification mark and rating are legible and photographed.
  • Certification database record matches the physical product.
  • Test standard, category mark, size and temperature-rise limits are suitable.
  • Glass, frame, door or wall and hardware are a listed combination.
  • Installation follows the listing, manufacturer instructions and applicable NFPA 80 provisions.
  • Factory and country-of-origin statements cover the actual product and any downstream fabrication.
  • Local code edition and authority having jurisdiction requirements are confirmed.
  • Submittals, correspondence, photographs and delivery records are retained for future inspection.

What a defensible answer sounds like

A reliable project answer is specific: “The 60-minute fire-protection-rated door glazing is product X, listed under design Y, manufactured at the named factory in the stated country, cut by the identified fabricator, and installed in the listed frame and door configuration.” If you can state only that a distributor supplied “fire-rated glass,” you do not yet know the product’s origin or whether the installed assembly is compliant.

Origin is one part of due diligence. The decisive question is whether the exact glass and the complete opening match a current certification and the code-required application. Country-of-origin information should travel with that evidence, not replace it.
