How to Dig Up and Store Dahlia Tubers for Winter

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In a cold-winter climate, dig dahlia tubers after the foliage has died back or a hard frost has blackened it, but before the soil freezes hard. Lift the clump with a fork, cure it until the surface is dry, then keep it in a dark, ventilated place above freezing—most extension recommendations fall between 35°F and 50°F. The right packing material depends on whether your storage space tends to dry tubers or make them rot.

Warm regions may be able to leave dahlias in the ground under mulch, but winter minimum temperatures, drainage and rainfall determine whether that works. Treat zone-based advice as a starting point and use local Extension guidance for your soil and climate.

Decide whether your dahlias need to come out

Dahlia tubers are tender storage organs. Repeated freezing can destroy them, while cold, wet soil can encourage crown and tuber rot. Gardeners in regions with hard winter freezes generally lift and store the clumps. In milder areas, leaving them in the ground can work when the soil drains well and winter temperatures stay moderate.

Cold-winter gardens

Plan to lift before the ground freezes solid. A killing frost is a useful signal because it stops the season’s top growth and indicates that digging time is near. Do not wait for a long period of frozen weather: a frozen crown is difficult to extract without breaking it, and ice damage can make storage failures more likely.

Mild or frost-free gardens

Some gardeners in USDA zones 8 and warmer overwinter clumps in place, and North Carolina State guidance discusses mulching in zones 7–10. Those are regional possibilities, not guarantees. Heavy winter rain, poorly drained soil or an occasional temperature plunge can kill tubers even where the calendar says the climate is mild. Washington State University’s Yakima County guidance similarly notes that frost is not biologically required before lifting in a frost-free location if the tubers have had enough time to mature; its 2026 article gives 135 days of growth as a possible local threshold, not a universal rule.

  • Lift and store when winter freezes are normal for your area.
  • Consider in-ground overwintering only where local advice supports it, the soil drains freely and winter wetness is limited.
  • When uncertain, store a portion of the clump and leave a portion in place as a risk-managed trial.

Choose the digging date

In a cold climate, wait until the foliage dies naturally or is blackened by the first hard frost, then dig before a hard freeze. The delay lets the plant finish moving resources into the crown, but the exact interval varies by climate and by how wet or cold your soil becomes.

Two established timing sequences

Approach Sequence Why a gardener might use it
Iowa State sequence Cut plants back within three or four days of a killing frost, leave the clumps in the ground another six or seven days, then dig. Provides a defined curing period in the soil after frost.
UNH sequence Delay cutting hollow stems until immediately before digging. Reduces the chance that rain will run down a cut stem and collect in the crown.

Neither schedule is a universal law. In a rainy region, follow the later-cutting logic to keep water out of hollow stems; where an early cut is customary, protect the crown from prolonged rain and dig before freezing weather. UConn recommends waiting for blackened foliage when possible.

Prepare tools and a work area

Gather a garden fork or spade, clean pruners, a hose or soft brush, labels and a permanent marker, shallow boxes or crates, and your chosen packing medium. A fork is usually safer than a narrow spade because its tines can loosen soil with less chance of slicing through a tuber. Have a shaded, ventilated curing area ready at about 60–70°F; direct sun can overheat or dehydrate exposed tubers.

  • Write the variety name on a durable label before plants are cut down.
  • Use clean tools, especially if any plant showed disease symptoms.
  • Set up a surface where clumps can drain without sitting in water.

Lift the clump without damaging eyes

  1. Cut back the top growth. Follow your chosen local sequence. Leave enough stem to handle the clump while loosening it, then make the final cut close to the crown.
  2. Start well away from the crown. Insert the fork or spade several inches from the stem and work around all sides. The exact distance depends on clump size; the goal is to avoid entering the zone where tubers radiate.
  3. Loosen the soil completely. Lever the soil gently rather than prying against the crown. Circle the plant until the clump moves freely.
  4. Lift from underneath. Raise the whole clump with the tool and support it with both hands. Never pull on the stem or tug individual tubers from compacted soil.
  5. Handle the crown and necks carefully. The thin necks can snap, and the eyes are concentrated around the stem-to-crown connection. A detached tuber without a viable eye may never produce a plant.
  6. Shake off loose soil. Do not scrape aggressively or throw clumps onto a hard surface; bruises and cuts provide entry points for rot.

University of Wisconsin–Madison Extension also emphasizes careful handling because the skin is easily damaged. If a tuber is cut, set it aside for separate observation rather than packing it tightly with sound material.

Clean, label and cure the tubers

Remove soil without creating wounds

UNH recommends washing soil from the clump so that damage and rot are easier to see. A gentle hose spray is preferable to a hard jet. UConn notes that some gardeners store with soil left on, so either practice can work when the clump is sound and ultimately dry. Cleaning is useful when your soil is heavy or wet; leaving a light coating may be reasonable when washing would leave the clump saturated and your storage area is humid.

Label before varieties are confused

Attach the label to the clump or its container while the variety is still obvious. Include the variety name and, if you grow several colors, a short note about bed location. Ink on a paper tag can fail in damp packing, so use a weather-resistant label and permanent marker.

Cure to a dry surface

Place clumps in a single layer in a ventilated, shaded space at 60–70°F. UNH describes curing for a few days; Iowa State and the University of Georgia describe about 24 hours. Use “dry to the touch” as the practical endpoint: the exterior should no longer feel slick or wet, but the tubers should not be left exposed until they shrivel. Turn or reposition clumps if air cannot reach the underside.

Set storage temperature and humidity

Storage succeeds when tubers stay cool, dark and above freezing while avoiding both stagnant moisture and excessive drying. Extension recommendations are not identical, so use the range that fits your room and packing method.

Source Temperature guidance Additional detail
University of Georgia Cooperative Extension 35–50°F Describes this as a desirable storage range.
UNH Extension (2019) Below 50°F but above freezing Cure at 60–70°F for a few days first.
Iowa State University Extension 40–50°F Lists vermiculite, peat moss or wood shavings as packing options.
UConn Home & Garden Education Center (2024) 45–55°F Suggests inspection every two to three weeks.

These are practical Extension targets, not guarantees. A steady 42°F location is generally safer than a room that swings between warm days and near-freezing nights. Never allow the storage area to freeze.

Choose a packing method for your room

Match the medium to the way your storage space behaves. Tubers in a dry heated basement may need a lightly moist medium; tubers in a naturally damp cellar may need little or none.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Method How to use it Main risk and correction
Lightly moistened vermiculite Place a layer in a ventilated box, set in the clump, and cover lightly. The medium should feel barely moist, never wet. Wet vermiculite encourages rot; remove damp material and increase airflow.
Peat moss Use as a loose, lightly moist surround in a box. Overpacking can hold excess water; reduce moisture if condensation appears.
Wood shavings Surround cured clumps with clean, dry-to-barely-moist shavings. Very dry shavings can pull moisture from tubers; inspect for shriveling.
Sand Use a breathable container and a small amount of slightly moist sand around the clump. Heavy, wet sand limits airflow and raises rot risk.
No packing Store clumps in an open or ventilated container in a naturally moist, cool room. Dry rooms can shrivel tubers; add a suitable medium only if inspection shows moisture loss.
Open-bag method Oregon State describes using a bag left open to permit air exchange. A sealed bag traps condensation; leave it open and check regularly.

Keep containers off a damp floor and out of direct light. Do not seal a box or plastic bag around freshly washed or insufficiently cured clumps. Airflow matters as much as the packing material.

Inspect through winter

Do not pack dahlia tubers and forget them until spring. UNH advises occasional checks; UConn recommends every two to three weeks; Oregon State specifically calls attention to condensation.

  1. Open the container and look for soft spots, darkening, fuzzy growth or a sour smell.
  2. Remove any rotting tuber immediately, cutting back to firm tissue only if the remaining piece still has a crown connection and eye.
  3. Discard packing material that is visibly wet or moldy, then let the container air out before repacking with dry or barely moist material.
  4. If tubers are shriveling and the medium is bone-dry, add a very small amount of moisture to the medium—not directly to the crown—and recheck sooner.
  5. Return the container to a stable, dark, above-freezing location.

Decide when to divide

Every division must contain a piece of crown with at least one viable eye. A tuber by itself, detached from the crown, may look healthy yet fail to sprout.

Divide in spring

Many growers wait until early spring, when eyes begin to swell and are easier to identify. This reduces the chance of cutting a division that lacks a growing point and is a useful choice for beginners. Keep the clump intact during winter, then separate it when the eyes are visible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Divide in fall

Fall division can make smaller clumps that are easier to pack and can suit gardeners who already recognize the crown and eyes. It creates more cut surfaces before storage, however, so pieces must be handled gently and cured properly.

Division timing Advantage Trade-off
Spring Swollen eyes are easier to see; lower risk of making eyeless pieces. Large clumps occupy more storage space through winter.
Fall Smaller clumps are convenient to store and share. Eyes can be harder to locate, and fresh cuts need careful curing.

Troubleshoot common storage failures

Symptom Likely cause Action
Soft, collapsing tubers Rot from excess moisture, injury or condensation. Remove affected tissue, discard wet packing, air the container and improve drainage and ventilation.
Water droplets inside a bag or box Condensation from a sealed container or temperature swings. Open the container, dry the exterior of clumps and repack only when surfaces are dry.
Wrinkled, lightweight tubers Storage air or packing medium is too dry. Move to a more humid location or lightly moisten the medium; avoid soaking.
Missing sprouts in spring Division lacked an eye or the eye was damaged during digging or cutting. For future divisions, keep a visible crown piece with each tuber and lift farther from the plant.
Frozen clumps Storage temperature fell to or below 32°F. Move storage above freezing; prevent recurrence with a more stable room or insulation that does not trap moisture.

A repeatable winter-storage checklist

  • Confirm whether your region and soil justify lifting or allow reliable in-ground overwintering.
  • Wait for dieback or a killing frost in cold climates, but dig before hard ground freeze.
  • Cut stems according to local weather and moisture conditions.
  • Loosen soil on every side with a fork or spade; lift from below, never by the stem.
  • Wash gently or brush off soil, inspect for damage, and label each variety.
  • Cure at 60–70°F in shade and ventilation until surfaces are dry to the touch.
  • Store in darkness at a stable temperature generally between 35°F and 50°F, always above freezing.
  • Use breathable containers and only lightly moist packing where the room requires it.
  • Inspect every few weeks for rot, condensation and shriveling.
  • Divide in spring when eyes swell unless you are confident identifying eyes in fall.
