Amazon Alexa offers the closest built-in replacement for a traditional two-way intercom: its Drop In feature connects supported Alexa devices for live conversation. Google Nest/Home and Apple HomePod can send useful room-to-room voice messages, but their standard Broadcast and Intercom features are primarily one-way announcements.
Before setting anything up, decide whether you need a live conversation, a message to one room, or an announcement for the whole home. That distinction determines which platform is suitable.

Choose the type of communication you need
| Use case | Best fit | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Live, two-way conversation | Alexa Drop In | Creates an immediate audio connection between permitted Alexa devices. |
| Message to one room or device | Alexa, Google, or Apple | Sends a targeted announcement; the recipient normally cannot answer through the same feature. |
| Message to everyone | Alexa Announcements, Google Broadcast, or Apple Intercom | Plays or delivers a voice message to configured devices and recipients. |
An Echo cannot natively Drop In on a HomePod, and a Google Broadcast will not automatically play through an Echo. These communication tools are generally ecosystem-specific.
Before you start
- Use compatible devices. For speaker-to-speaker communication, you will normally need at least two speakers or displays supported by the same platform.
- Put devices in meaningful rooms. Use names such as “Kitchen,” “Upstairs,” “Nursery,” or “Office.” Avoid duplicate names and labels that sound alike.
- Check accounts and homes. Confirm that devices belong to the correct Amazon household, Google Home, or Apple Home and that the intended household members are signed in.
- Check connectivity. Every receiving device must be powered on and online. Google’s documented speaker-to-speaker Broadcast setup requires devices on the same Wi-Fi network.
- Update software. Install current mobile-app, speaker, and firmware updates. Exact support varies by device, country, language, account, and app version.
- Check restrictions. A physical microphone mute, Do Not Disturb, Downtime, Digital Wellbeing controls, or disabled notifications can prevent delivery.
Amazon Alexa: the best choice for a live intercom
Alexa provides two different tools. Drop In creates an immediate two-way audio connection between supported Alexa-enabled devices. Announcements sends a voice message but does not create a live conversation.
#1 Best Overall
- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Set up Drop In
In the Alexa app, the documented route is:
- Open the Alexa app.
- Select the Conversation icon.
- Select the Drop In bar.
- Choose the contact or device for which Drop In should be enabled.
App labels can vary by operating system, region, account, and Alexa app version. Check both device-level settings and contact permissions. Allowing a household device is a different privacy decision from allowing an outside contact.
Alexa commands
- “Alexa, drop in.”
- “Alexa, drop in on the kitchen.”
- “Alexa, drop in on Echo.”
- “Alexa, hang up.”
For a one-way message, try commands such as “Alexa, announce that dinner is ready” or “Alexa, tell everyone the movie is starting.” Natural-language handling can change, so a named room or device is usually safer than an ambiguous label.
Drop In is optional, and outside-home contacts require permission. Because it opens a live connection, enable it only for people who should be able to initiate one. Use the device’s physical microphone-mute control when privacy is important.
See Amazon’s Alexa communication guidance and Drop In help for current eligibility and controls.

Google Nest/Home: Broadcast announcements
Google’s built-in intercom-style feature is Broadcast. It sends a voice message to Google Nest or Home speakers, displays, or compatible smart clocks. You can target the home, a room, or a particular device, but standard Broadcast is not a persistent two-way intercom.
Requirements and settings
Google documents these requirements for relevant speaker-to-speaker Broadcast workflows:
- Two or more compatible Google Assistant speakers or displays
- Devices on the same Wi-Fi network
- At least one household member signed in on each device
- Do Not Disturb and Downtime turned off
- Firmware version 1.39154941 or later for the documented workflow
In the Google Home app, the documented settings route is Settings > Communication > Broadcast. Google Home navigation changes regularly, so look for the Communication and Broadcast settings if your menus differ.

Google commands
- “Hey Google, broadcast dinner is ready.”
- “Hey Google, shout the car is leaving.”
- “Hey Google, tell everyone to come downstairs.”
- “Hey Google, announce the movie is starting.”
For room- or device-specific messages, use the room or device name recognized by your Google Home setup. If targeting behaves unpredictably, simplify the names and verify each device’s room assignment.

Broadcast can be affected by Do Not Disturb, Downtime, filters, and Digital Wellbeing controls. Requirements may differ when broadcasting from an Android device, iPhone, iPad, routine, or speaker.
Google’s Broadcast documentation explains current commands and restrictions. Guest Mode can provide additional privacy control in supported languages and countries; Google says Broadcast continues to work while Guest Mode is active, while personal results are restricted. See Google’s Guest Mode guidance.
Apple HomePod: Intercom messages
Apple’s Intercom feature sends voice messages to configured HomePods and selected Apple devices. Depending on the Home configuration, recipients can include HomePod, HomePod mini, iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, AirPods or compatible Beats headphones connected to an Apple device, and CarPlay in supported situations.
Recommended Free Tools
Set up HomePod Intercom
- Update your HomePod or HomePod mini.
- Update the iPhone, iPad, or Apple Watch used with the feature.
- Open the Home app on an iPhone or iPad.
- Tap More, then Home Settings.
- Tap Intercom.
- Choose which household members receive messages and which HomePods participate.
Apple says Intercom is turned on automatically after relevant devices are updated, but confirm the recipient and notification settings manually. Room and zone names must be correct for targeted messages.

Apple commands and app controls
- “Hey Siri, intercom ‘It’s time to wake up.’”
- “Hey Siri, ask everyone ‘Has the dog been fed?’”
- “Hey Siri, announce upstairs ‘The movie is starting.’”
- “Hey Siri, ask the kitchen ‘What’s for breakfast?’”
You can also open the Home app, tap the Intercom button, record or speak a message, and send it to the configured recipients.
HomePod Intercom is message-based rather than an always-open, Alexa-style two-way channel. Apple also documents a specific behavior in which an Intercom message sent from HomePod is not received on the sender’s iPhone, iPad, or Apple Watch when voice recognition is configured on HomePod. Do not assume every Apple device receives every message; recipients, software, and notification settings matter. See Apple’s HomePod Intercom guide.

The speaker does not respond
- Check power and Wi-Fi status.
- Make sure the microphone is not physically muted.
- Repeat the wake word clearly.
- Confirm the account, household, and room assignment.
- Update the app and speaker software.
- Check Do Not Disturb, Downtime, Digital Wellbeing, filters, and notifications.
The message reaches the wrong room
Duplicate names, incorrect room assignments, similar-sounding labels, and ambiguous commands are the usual causes. Rename devices with distinct natural names, recheck room assignments, test a whole-home message, and then test one room or device at a time.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteOnly some devices receive the message
Check whether each device is online, supported, signed in to the same home or household, and allowed to receive announcements. For Google, verify the same-network requirement and restriction settings. For Apple, check Intercom recipients and notification destinations.

The other person cannot answer
That is expected with Google Broadcast and Apple Intercom: both are primarily one-way message systems. Use Alexa Drop In where appropriate, a supported voice call, a phone, a video-call device, or dedicated intercom hardware when an immediate response is essential.
Privacy and household permissions
Smart-speaker intercoms use microphones, cloud-connected accounts, and audible playback in shared spaces. Anyone near a receiving speaker may hear a message. Review permissions before enabling the feature in a bedroom, nursery, rental property, or shared home.
- Limit Alexa Drop In to trusted household members or contacts.
- Use physical microphone-mute controls when a speaker should not listen.
- Review Google household access, Guest Mode, Do Not Disturb, and Digital Wellbeing settings.
- Review Apple Home household members, Intercom recipients, and phone, watch, headphone, and CarPlay destinations.
- Do not send passwords, medical details, financial information, or other sensitive information through an audible announcement.
Which platform should you choose?
- Choose Alexa if live two-way room communication is the priority and you are comfortable managing Drop In permissions.
- Choose Google Nest/Home if you mainly want convenient home-, room-, or device-specific announcements and already use Google Home.
- Choose HomePod if your household is invested in Apple Home and wants messages to reach configured Apple devices as well as speakers.
- Choose dedicated intercom or calling hardware if users need physical call/answer controls, reliable communication independent of a voice assistant, cross-platform operation, or stronger privacy boundaries.
Dedicated systems can be especially suitable for children, older adults, caregivers, or anyone who may not reliably use voice commands. Cameras and calling displays can add two-way communication, but they also introduce video privacy, installation, and possible subscription considerations.

A reliable testing sequence
- Send a message from one device to one other device.
- Test a named room.
- Test a whole-home announcement.
- Test from the relevant mobile app.
- Temporarily check restrictions such as Do Not Disturb and Downtime to identify what suppresses delivery.
- Test the physical microphone-mute control and confirm everyone understands when the system is listening or connected.
The most important buying decision is not speaker size or sound quality. It is whether your household needs a live two-way conversation or simply a dependable way to send one-way messages.
