How to Use GPS Navigation Settings to Avoid Road Closures and Traffic Delays

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The most reliable way to reduce delays is to prepare the route before moving, turn on live traffic information, inspect at least one alternative, and treat every “avoid” option as a preference rather than a guarantee. Navigation apps combine map data, traffic speeds, incident reports and (in some services) user submissions, but none can promise that every closure is known or that a reroute will happen immediately. For a planned closure or a safety-critical journey, check the responsible road authority’s current notice as well as the app.

Use this pre-departure workflow

Do the route setup while parked. If you need to change a destination, read an alert or compare routes after departure, use voice control or pull over legally. Handling a phone while driving is unsafe and may be unlawful.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Enter the exact destination. For a large site, use the correct entrance, gate, building or access road rather than only the company name. A destination pin on the wrong side of a divided road can create a long, avoidable detour.
  2. Open the route overview. Look for the proposed path, estimated arrival time, road names and any alternate routes. Zoom out far enough to see bridges, ferries, motorways/freeways and likely bottlenecks.
  3. Display traffic and incidents. Enable the app’s traffic layer, traffic alerts or equivalent option where the service and region provide it. Inspect colored slowdowns and incident or closure symbols instead of relying only on the headline ETA.
  4. Set only the constraints you actually need. Toll, ferry, motorway/freeway and (where offered) HOV preferences can materially change the route. Turn on an avoidance option for a genuine requirement, not simply because the label sounds safer or faster.
  5. Compare alternatives. Evaluate travel time, road type, known incidents, tolls, ferry schedules, unfamiliar turns and the kind of vehicle you are driving. The shortest distance is not automatically the quickest, safest or most suitable route.
  6. Recheck the preview after changing a setting. A route preference can move you onto narrow local roads, steep grades or a longer urban path. Confirm the resulting route before you start.
  7. Save the plan mentally or in the vehicle system. Know the first major turns and the intended fallback route. This helps if mobile data, positioning or the app’s traffic feed becomes unavailable.

This process is especially useful for construction deliveries, inspections and service calls: a closure that is minor for a passenger car may be impractical for a truck, trailer or equipment vehicle. Verify vehicle restrictions and site instructions separately; a navigation app’s road classification is not a substitute for them.

What “avoid” settings really do

An avoid switch changes the routes the app prefers. It does not create a physical barrier around a road category. Waze explicitly says it may still suggest toll roads, freeways or ferries when avoidance is enabled if no suitable alternative is available. Menu terms also vary by market: one version may say “freeways,” another “motorways.” The wording and available controls can differ between a phone, Android Auto, CarPlay and Android Automotive.

Preference What it can change What it cannot guarantee
Avoid toll roads Prioritizes routes without priced toll segments. It cannot guarantee a toll-free route when geography leaves no practical alternative; a route may also contain a toll that was not classified as expected.
Avoid ferries Prioritizes bridges or land routes instead of ferry crossings. It cannot guarantee that every water crossing is excluded if the remaining network has no viable path.
Avoid freeways or motorways Prioritizes surface roads and other non-freeway links. Waze says the preference may be overridden when alternatives are unavailable. Surface roads can be slower, more congested or less suitable for large vehicles.
Avoid HOV or car-pool lanes Attempts to keep the route out of lanes requiring a qualifying occupancy or permit. Availability and enforcement rules vary by region; read signs and follow local regulations.

Use one setting at a time when troubleshooting. If you enable toll, ferry and freeway avoidance together, the app may have very few choices and produce a route that is much longer or still uses one of those road types. After any change, inspect the full route and its ETA again.

Waze: configure preferences and use live rerouting

Set persistent navigation preferences

In Waze, open Settings, choose Navigation, and review the available route options for toll roads, ferries, freeways/motorways and HOV travel. The exact labels depend on market and device. Waze says these preferences carry forward to future drives, so check them periodically rather than assuming they apply only to the current trip.

Use route-level controls before departure

After entering a destination, open the route screen and look for the current route’s Avoid options. This lets you make a one-trip decision without permanently changing every future drive. Review the resulting route line, ETA and road list. If the app still includes a road type you selected to avoid, that is consistent with Waze’s stated behavior when no suitable alternative exists; do not keep changing settings in the hope of forcing an impossible route.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Interpret live traffic and closure information

Waze describes real-time directions and automatic rerouting based on live traffic, incidents and road closures. Treat those updates as signals. A closure may be newly reported, incorrectly located, already cleared or affecting only one lane. If the suggested detour sends you toward an unfamiliar road, stop safely and review the map rather than making a sudden maneuver.

Know the availability limits

Waze’s app listing cautions that some features are not available in all countries. CarPlay, Android Auto and Android Automotive can also expose different controls from the phone application. If a setting or report button is missing, use the current in-car or phone interface available in your region instead of following a screenshot from another market.

Apple Maps on iPhone: check conditions and report incidents

Apple’s iPhone guide describes checking traffic and reporting incidents, including road closures. To prepare, enter the destination, inspect the route overview and activate the traffic view or traffic-related controls shown in your current version of Maps. When you see a closure or hazard that is not represented, use the in-app incident-reporting control only when you can do so safely—ideally through a hands-free interaction or while stopped.

Apple evaluates incoming reports. A submitted report therefore contributes information but does not guarantee that the incident will appear on the map or that your route will change immediately. Continue to follow lawful traffic control, cones, police directions and posted detours. The documented steps are for the iPhone guide; do not assume that the same controls or wording appear on every Apple platform.

Google Maps: use current route and incident controls

Google describes incident reporting in Maps for items such as construction and lane closures, with information coming from Maps and Waze communities. It also explains that Waze alerts are added by community members using real-world road information and publicly available data from local authorities. That makes the alerts useful context, not an official closure order.

Google Maps interfaces change by operating system, account, country and release. A retrieved Android help result lists navigation settings such as avoiding toll roads and reporting traffic incidents, including lane closures, but that copy was delivered through a third-party mirror rather than Google’s own support domain. For that reason, use the labels shown in your installed app: open the destination’s route options, review traffic or layers, and look for the current settings and incident-report controls. Confirm a planned closure with the responsible transport agency instead of relying on a copied menu path.

How the major app capabilities differ

There is no evidence here for a universal accuracy winner. The practical choice depends on your phone, vehicle integration, country and the road type you need to avoid.

Capability Waze Apple Maps Google Maps
Live traffic and rerouting Describes real-time directions and automatic rerouting from live traffic, incidents and closures. iPhone guidance supports traffic checking; behavior and controls depend on the current release and region. Provides traffic and incident features, with labels and availability varying by platform.
Community incident input Driver reporting is listed; some features are unavailable in some countries. iPhone users can report incidents, including road closures; Apple evaluates reports. Google says reports can include construction and lane closures from Maps and Waze communities.
Road-type preferences Help documents toll, ferry, freeway/motorway and HOV avoidance; preferences may be overridden if alternatives are inadequate. Use the options presented in the current app; the supplied iPhone material does not establish an identical set of avoid categories. Navigation settings include toll avoidance in the retrieved Android help result; verify current labels in the official app.
In-car availability Listing mentions CarPlay; controls can differ on CarPlay, Android Auto and Android Automotive. Documented material in this guide is iPhone-specific. Phone and in-car interfaces can differ by platform and region.
Official closure authority None of these app descriptions replaces a current notice from the road or transport authority responsible for the route.

During the trip: respond to a closure without creating a new hazard

When the app reroutes automatically

Read the new ETA and route summary when it is safe. Check whether the detour introduces a toll, ferry, motorway, low-clearance road or other constraint. If the route is unsuitable, stop legally before selecting another option. Do not cross barriers or drive around a closure because the map line appears to continue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When you reach an unexpected roadblock

  1. Follow signs, police instructions and temporary traffic control first.
  2. Pull over or reach a safe stopping location before examining the phone.
  3. Refresh the route after your position updates, then compare the alternatives.
  4. If the closure is planned or extensive, consult the local road authority’s notice or detour map.
  5. Tell the person expecting you about the revised ETA rather than rushing to recover lost time.

When the app and local conditions disagree

Give priority to what you can lawfully observe: a barricade, closed bridge, flood warning, work-zone marshal or official sign. The map may be stale, a report may describe only one direction, or the closure may have changed since the last update. Use the app to find a broad alternative, then verify that alternative against signs and official information.

How to verify planned closures

Navigation apps are strongest at dynamic routing; they are not the definitive record for every future work zone, parade, emergency restriction or bridge maintenance project. If you know the location, identify the agency responsible for that road—such as a municipal, county, state, provincial or national transport authority—and check its current closure notice, travel advisory or project page. Look for the effective dates, time windows, affected direction, detour instructions, vehicle restrictions and whether the notice applies to local access.

For construction work, compare the agency notice with the site’s own delivery instructions. A public detour may be legal for a car but unsuitable for a vehicle carrying materials, a trailer or an oversized load. Confirm clearance, weight, width and turning requirements through the responsible authority or project manager; do not infer them from a navigation app’s road color.

Reporting an incident safely

Reports help other drivers only when they are timely and accurate, but making one must never put you or anyone else at risk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Use a mounted, hands-free interaction or wait until parked.
  • Do not photograph, type or browse while the vehicle is moving.
  • Describe what you can actually verify: a blocked lane, stopped traffic, construction, debris or a closure sign.
  • Avoid guessing the reopening time or reporting a rumor as a confirmed closure.
  • Follow local law and employer rules, particularly when driving a work vehicle.

Apple documents incident reporting on iPhone, and Waze lists driver reporting. Both are contribution channels, not a promise that an alert will be accepted, displayed or acted on immediately.

Troubleshoot common routing problems

The app keeps using a road I selected to avoid

First, check whether the preference is enabled for the current trip and whether a suitable alternative exists. Waze specifically warns that it can include an avoided road type when route choices are limited. Inspect the route for a ferry crossing, toll segment or freeway entrance that may be unavoidable, then decide whether a longer route is workable.

The ETA changes repeatedly

Live traffic is changing, the app has received a new incident, or your position and speed have been recalculated. Compare the updated route with the previous one only while stopped. If the changes are extreme, verify mobile data, GPS permission and the destination pin, then use an official road notice for a known closure.

No closure marker appears even though a road is closed

Coverage and reporting speed vary by location, and an app cannot know every event immediately. Follow the physical closure, seek a safe stopping place and check the responsible road authority. Do not treat the absence of an icon as proof that the road is open.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A report appears, but the road looks clear

The report may be old, directional, limited to a shoulder or lane, or already resolved. Slow down, obey signs and assess the road without handling the phone. Continue only when conditions and traffic control allow it.

The interface does not match an online instruction

Labels change by country, app version, operating system and in-car platform. Open the current Navigation, Route options, Traffic or Report controls in your installed app. Waze’s “freeways” may appear as “motorways,” and a phone menu may not be reproduced in CarPlay or Android Auto.

A repeatable checklist for work and personal travel

  • Destination pin and entrance confirmed.
  • Traffic view or alerts enabled where available.
  • Route overview and at least one alternative inspected.
  • Toll, ferry, freeway/motorway and HOV preferences checked deliberately.
  • Vehicle size, clearance, weight and access restrictions verified separately.
  • Known planned closures checked with the responsible road authority.
  • Phone mounted or voice control ready; no handheld interaction while moving.
  • Fallback stopping location identified if the route becomes inconsistent.

Used this way, navigation settings reduce avoidable surprises without creating false confidence. Live routing, community reports and route preferences are decision aids; signs, lawful traffic control and current authority notices remain decisive when conditions conflict.
