How to Use Google Maps and Waze Settings to Avoid Construction Delays

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Google Maps before you leave to see traffic, construction symbols, closures, and alternate routes; use Waze during the drive for customizable construction and closure alerts and fast community reports. Turn on the relevant layers and alerts, compare routes, and report only conditions you can safely observe. Treat both apps as decision aids: signs, cones, flaggers, police officers, and other traffic controllers always take priority.

Set up both apps before you leave

Construction information is most useful when you check it before reaching the work zone. Google Maps is particularly useful for planning: its Traffic layer, saved-trip information, and alternate-route display show the broad situation around your destination. Waze is designed around live driving information, with controls for which report types appear and community updates that can trigger a reroute.

Pre-trip overview Traffic layer, incident symbols, saved-trip and commute recommendations Map alerts and route preview with selected report categories
Construction information Displays construction incidents when available; users can report Construction Construction alert category can be shown on the map or announced while driving
Lane-closure information Users can submit a Lane closure report when that option is available Lane-closure delays are generally represented as traffic or jam conditions rather than a full Closure
Complete road closure May display a closure incident and account for it in routing The Closure report is intended for a roadway that is actually blocked and immediately affects the reporter’s route
Route controls Explicit Avoid highways, Avoid tolls, and Avoid ferries options, plus manual selection of alternate routes Continuous live rerouting around reported conditions, with fewer explicit avoidance switches

Before starting, update neither app solely for this purpose; instead, confirm that location permission, mobile data, and notifications are available for the trip. If a passenger is present, let that person handle reports. A driver should never type, search, or submit a report while moving through traffic.

How to check construction in Google Maps

1. Turn on the Traffic layer

  1. Open Google Maps on Android or iPhone.
  2. Tap Layers.
  3. Select Traffic.

The traffic overlay uses green for little or no delay, orange for a medium amount of traffic, and red for delays. Incident symbols can identify crashes, construction, and road closures. A dotted red line can indicate that a road is closed. Google’s traffic-layer documentation describes the colors this way: “The color code shows you the speed of traffic on the road.”

Zoom out far enough to see the approaches to the work area, then zoom in to inspect intersections and ramps. A route that appears clear at the final turn may still be slowed several blocks earlier by lane merging. Check both the road you expect to use and parallel roads before accepting the first route suggestion.

2. Compare the blue route with gray alternatives

Enter the destination and review the blue recommended route together with any gray alternatives. Tap an alternative to see its travel-time estimate and path. Choose the route that keeps you away from the construction area when its additional time and complexity are acceptable. A short detour can be preferable to entering a corridor where lanes repeatedly merge, but a long diversion through residential streets may create new delays or violate local restrictions.

For a broader change to the route, open the route options and consider:

  • Avoid highways: useful when highway construction is the problem, but it can move traffic onto slower surface roads.
  • Avoid tolls: relevant when a toll facility is the affected crossing or corridor.
  • Avoid ferries: useful when a ferry schedule or terminal approach is disrupted.

These switches are preferences, not construction filters. You still need to inspect the resulting route for incident symbols, narrow approaches, and roads that appear to feed into the same work zone.

3. Use saved-trip and commute information

If you have a saved home, work, or recurring trip, open it before departure. Google Maps can show a recommended route, alternatives, and delays such as crashes or construction for saved trips. This is useful when a project affects a familiar corridor: you can compare the normal route with an alternative before the usual departure time rather than discovering the restriction at the first merge.

Saved-trip information is still a snapshot of available data. Recheck immediately before leaving if the trip is time-sensitive, and look again after entering the vehicle because a new lane restriction can change the practical choice.

4. Report construction or a lane closure safely

While navigation is active, tap Report and choose Construction or Lane closure when those choices are offered. The exact choices can differ by country, device, app version, and current navigation context. Google says reports may be shown to other drivers, so submit one only when you can do so without taking attention from the road. A passenger can submit the report after confirming what is present; otherwise wait until you are legally and safely stopped.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Describe what you can actually see, not what you infer from a sign several miles away. A lane that is coned off for a short distance is different from a road that is completely blocked. Do not report a project simply because you know it is scheduled if no current restriction is visible; planned work may be staged, postponed, or operating outside the travel lane.

5. Interpret Google Maps’ limits

Google Maps may lack a current report, retain an old incident, or show a project without accurately reflecting its queue. Coverage depends on location, connectivity, community reports, and official feeds. Alternate routes also depend on the same underlying road network and can become congested when many drivers make the same switch. Use the overlay to identify choices and questions, then verify the physical road with signs, cones, flaggers, and police directions.

How to configure Waze for construction and closures

1. Enable the alert categories

  1. Open Waze.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Choose Alerts and reports.
  4. Open Reports.
  5. Select Construction and Closures.
  6. Turn on Show on map and/or Alert while driving, according to how much notification you want.

Waze notes that alert types vary by location. It also limits and prioritizes alerts on a route, so enabling a category does not mean every report will produce an audible warning. If you are receiving too many notices, keep the map display enabled and reserve spoken alerts for the categories that can change your decision immediately.

2. Distinguish a construction warning from a closure

A construction alert tells you that work is reported near the road. It does not necessarily mean that every lane is blocked or that the route is unusable. Examine the map and the road signs before changing course.

Use Waze’s Closure report only when the roadway is actually blocked from passage. Waze states: “Your report will immediately affect your route, and Waze will avoid the road closure.” The closure can become visible to more users after additional reports and may disappear when Wazers begin driving on that road again. That behavior makes an accurate, current report valuable and an assumption-based report harmful.

3. Report congestion with the appropriate traffic category

From the Report menu, choose Traffic, Heavy, or Standstill for congestion you are seeing now. Waze instructs users to report real-time conditions close to the incident. Select the category that matches the observed queue rather than choosing Standstill because a project is known to exist nearby.

Traffic reports describe movement conditions; they are not substitutes for a Closure report. If vehicles are moving slowly through one open lane, report the congestion you observe. If no vehicle can pass because the road is physically blocked, use Closure when it is safe and available.

4. Understand lane-closure behavior

Waze’s partner documentation describes support for full roadway closures. Delays caused by one or more closed lanes are handled as jam alerts. Consequently, a lane closure may slow your route without producing the same avoidance behavior as a complete Closure report. Watch for a jam, construction marker, and roadside signs together; do not assume that the absence of a Closure icon means all lanes are open.

5. Accept or reject a live reroute deliberately

When Waze recalculates, compare the proposed path with the actual signs and traffic pattern. Accept it only if it remains legal, physically passable, and practical for your vehicle. An app may suggest a narrow local street, a turn prohibited at certain times, or a route that reaches the same work zone from another side. Never follow a voice instruction into a signed closure, across a barricade, or against a traffic controller’s direction.

Use Google Maps and Waze together without duplicating work

Plan in Google Maps, monitor in Waze

A practical division of labor is to use Google Maps before departure for a wide-area comparison and Waze during the drive for selected live alerts. In Google Maps, inspect the Traffic layer, saved-trip information, and alternate routes. In Waze, enable Construction and Closures, then keep the route view visible for changes in queue length or a new report. This approach gives you a deliberate starting route while preserving the option to react to a current incident.

Know that reports can cross between the services

Google announced on July 31, 2024, that Maps can accept incident information such as nearby construction and lane closures from the Maps and Waze communities. Users may see which app supplied a report. Waze for Cities also describes a channel through which official partners can share planned and live closures, lane closures, and major traffic-impacting events; supported Waze submissions can appear on Google Maps. The two maps can therefore show related information without being identical at the same moment.

Cross-posting does not create a universal, real-time inventory of every work zone. A report still depends on its location, freshness, corroboration, connectivity, and whether an official partner has supplied data.

A decision process for the day of the trip

Before starting the engine

  1. Enter the destination in Google Maps and turn on Layers > Traffic.
  2. Identify construction symbols, dotted red closure lines, and red or orange approaches.
  3. Compare the blue route with gray alternatives and apply Avoid highways, Avoid tolls, or Avoid ferries only when the preference fits the trip.
  4. Open a saved trip or commute view if you use one, and note any construction or crash delay.
  5. Open Waze’s route preview and confirm that Construction and Closures alerts are configured as intended.
  6. Choose a starting route that is legal, understandable, and consistent with the road signs you can see.

While approaching the work zone

  • Keep the navigation screen mounted where it can be glanced at without blocking your view.
  • Expect lane changes earlier than the map icon suggests; follow cones and advance-warning signs.
  • Let a passenger handle reports, or wait until stopped in a lawful location.
  • Use Waze’s current traffic categories for a queue you are actually observing.
  • Use Closure only for a complete blockage, not for ordinary slow traffic or a single closed lane.

When conditions change

  1. Read the new route aloud or have a passenger review its turns.
  2. Check that the first turn is permitted and that the route does not simply rejoin the same construction queue.
  3. Follow a reroute only after confirming it does not conflict with signs, barriers, flaggers, police, or local restrictions.
  4. If the app’s map conflicts with the road environment, follow the road environment and continue when it is safe.

Troubleshoot missing, stale, or confusing construction alerts

No construction alert appears

First check whether the app has a data connection and a current location fix. In Google Maps, confirm that Layers > Traffic is active. In Waze, revisit Settings > Alerts and reports > Reports and confirm that Construction or Closures is enabled for the map, driving alerts, or both. The category may not be offered in every location, and the absence of an alert is not proof that work is absent.

The map shows work, but the road looks clear

Construction can be staged, completed ahead of schedule, or positioned on an adjacent ramp. Reduce speed, look for the advance-warning signs, and continue only if the marked lane is open. Do not submit a Closure report merely to remove an icon that appears outdated; an inaccurate report can reroute other drivers unnecessarily.

The app routes through a signed closure

Do not enter. Stop or pull over safely, verify the closure on the road, and let the app recalculate from a legal position. If a passenger is available, submit the appropriate report. A complete blockage should use Waze’s Closure category; a partial restriction should be described as construction, lane closure, or traffic according to what is visible and what the current menu provides.

Google Maps and Waze disagree

Compare the timestamp or apparent freshness of each incident, the exact side of the divided road, and whether one report concerns a ramp while the other concerns the mainline. Check official roadside signs and traffic-control personnel before choosing. Neither service promises that every work zone, lane change, or queue will appear, and neither can guarantee a delay-free trip.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An alternate route is slower than the construction route

Review the whole path rather than the first estimated number. A detour may avoid the work zone but add tolls, ferry timing, difficult turns, school-zone restrictions, or another bottleneck. Keep the original route if its lanes are open and the observed queue is manageable; select the detour when the construction restriction makes the original path unreliable or unsafe.

What the apps can and cannot tell you

Question What the available features provide What still requires your judgment
Is there construction nearby? Map symbols and Construction alerts when data is available Whether the work affects your lane, direction, ramp, or arrival time
Is the road closed? Google Maps closure display; Waze Closure reporting and avoidance behavior Whether the physical barricade is still present and whether an officer has opened or redirected traffic
Should I take another route? Travel-time estimates, gray alternatives, avoidance preferences, and live rerouting Whether the detour is legal, safe, suitable for your vehicle, and less exposed to secondary congestion
How fresh is the information? Community reports, corroboration, and official partner feeds where supported Whether a report is current at this exact moment and location

Safety and reporting etiquette

  • Obey temporary signs, cones, channelizing devices, flaggers, police, and other authorized traffic controllers over any app instruction.
  • Do not hold a phone while driving or stop in a live lane to submit a report.
  • Report only what you can verify: construction, a lane closure, moving congestion, a standstill, or a complete closure are different conditions.
  • Do not use a Closure report to express frustration with a long queue or to warn about planned work that is not currently blocking travel.
  • Expect alert availability and menu labels to differ by location, device, app version, and the data supplied by local agencies or users.

There is no authoritative universal percentage for construction delays avoided or a guaranteed number of minutes saved by using either app. The practical benefit depends on the quality and freshness of the available data, whether other drivers corroborate it, the relevance of the route, and whether the restriction is a full closure or a constrained but passable roadway.
