Choose a topical product whose label identifies oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE) or PMD as an active ingredient, check its EPA registration information, and follow that product’s directions. Those formulated repellents are not interchangeable with aromatherapy oil, a diffuser, or a homemade mixture.
Does eucalyptus oil repel insects?
“Eucalyptus oil” can mean products with different ingredients and evidence behind them. Ordinary eucalyptus essential oil is not the same thing as a formulated insect repellent containing oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE) or PMD.
The CDC includes formulated OLE- or PMD-based products among topical repellent options. It does not recommend pure, unformulated oil of lemon eucalyptus as a repellent: it has not undergone the same validated safety and efficacy testing and is not registered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for that use. What to buy for bite protection
- Choose a topical repellent whose current label names OLE or PMD as an active ingredient.
- Check the product label and EPA registration information. The EPA explains that using a repellent according to its label is important for the protection it is intended to provide: Using Insect Repellents Safely and Effectively.
- Follow that product’s directions for where and how to apply it, when to reapply, and which pests it covers. Instructions and protection claims depend on the particular product; there is no universal dose or application schedule established here.
The evidence supports choosing a labeled product, not making a substitute at home. Adding essential oil to water or a carrier oil does not establish that the mixture is tested, safe, or effective as a repellent. Do not apply undiluted essential oil to skin.

How the products differ

Using OLE or PMD products around children
CDC generally advises against using products containing OLE or PMD on children younger than 3. EPA describes a limited, label-related exception for certain OLE-only products at concentrations of 30% or less. That is not a blanket exception for essential oils, every OLE product, or every formulation. Check the current label and follow CDC guidance and relevant public-health advice for the child’s age.

Houseplant pests
A topical repellent for bites is different from a pesticide used on plants. University of Minnesota Extension describes certain named plant-oil extracts as contact sprays, advises against untested homemade pesticide recipes, and says to follow pesticide labels. Its guidance does not establish eucalyptus oil as a reliable houseplant insect treatment. Diffusers and other household uses
A diffuser, cotton ball, planted eucalyptus, or room spray is not established by these sources as protection against mosquito or tick bites. Don’t rely on them in place of a labeled topical repellent.
