How to Use Epsom Salt to Kill Tree Roots—and Why You Shouldn’t

Epsom salt is not a proven or selective tree-root killer. Learn why the homemade treatment can damage soil and nearby plants, and what to do instead for living trees, stumps, salt damage, and sewer-root intrusion.

Do not use Epsom salt to kill tree roots. It is magnesium sulfate, not a proven selective root killer. A heavy application may injure nearby plants, disrupt soil nutrients, and contaminate drainage without reliably solving the root problem. The right response depends on whether you are dealing with a living tree, a dead stump, salt-damaged soil, or roots inside a sewer line.

Why Epsom salt is the wrong tool

Do not use Epsom salt to kill tree roots. Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate, not a proven selective tree-root killer. Although concentrated salts can injure plants by disrupting water uptake and soil chemistry, that injury is uncontrolled: it may affect nearby trees, shrubs, turf, soil organisms, and future plantings without reliably killing the roots you intended to target.

University extension guidance does not support Epsom salt as a dependable way to kill unwanted vegetation. Excess magnesium can also interfere with calcium and potassium uptake, damage plants, and contribute to mineral movement through soil and water. Use Epsom salt in garden soil only when a soil test identifies a genuine magnesium deficiency—not as a homemade herbicide.

If you were considering Epsom salt for a legitimate labeled household or garden use, keep it separate from tree-root control. There is no responsible “best Epsom salt” or universal number of cups, pounds, or gallons for killing roots.

Why an Epsom-salt root treatment is unreliable

A tree is not simply a mass of roots that can be selectively poisoned from the surface. Roots differ in depth, diameter, age, and location. Some connect with major structural roots, while others may be intertwined with or grafted to neighboring trees.

#1 Best Overall
Amazon Essentials Epsom Salt Soak, Magnesium Sulfate USP, 3 Pound, 1-Pack (Previously Amazon Basics)
  • SHIPMENT CONTAINS: One 3-pound resealable bag of fragrance free epsom salt for relaxing baths and soaks
  • RELAXING SOAK: Dissolves easily in warm water to create a soothing bath experience that helps relax muscles and reduce tension
  • VERSATILE USES: Perfect for full baths, foot soaks, and gardening applications to provide magnesium to plants
  • EASY APPLICATION: For a relaxing bath, generously pour into warm running water; for foot soaks, dissolve in a small basin and soak for 15-20 minutes
  • PURE FORMULA: Contains pure magnesium sulfate with no added fragrances, dyes, or fillers for a natural soaking experience
  • A surface application may never reach the roots causing the problem.
  • A heavy application can alter the soil around desirable plants as well as the target.
  • Partial root damage may stress or destabilize a living tree without removing it.
  • Salt injury can persist in the soil and complicate future landscaping.
  • A tree that appears dead may still be hazardous to fell, and damaged roots can reduce stability before removal.

“Salt can injure roots” is therefore not the same as “Epsom salt safely kills unwanted tree roots.” The first statement describes a possible form of plant damage; the second claims a selective treatment that has not been established.

What not to do

  • Do not dump bags of Epsom salt around a trunk or across a root zone.
  • Do not drill into or inject Epsom salt into a living tree.
  • Do not mix it with vinegar, bleach, dish detergent, or another homemade weed killer.
  • Do not apply salt near desirable trees, gardens, lawns, wells, waterways, septic systems, or drainage routes.
  • Do not assume that a dead-looking tree is safe to cut down.
  • Do not pour a chemical into a sewer or drain unless the product is specifically labeled for that use and a qualified professional or applicable authority confirms it is appropriate.

In the United States, a pesticide label is legally enforceable. The label determines the permitted target, site, application method, rate, timing, protective equipment, environmental precautions, and retreatment limits. Using a pesticide in a way that conflicts with its label can violate federal law. Product labels and permitted uses also vary by formulation and jurisdiction.

Choose the remedy for the actual problem

A living tree is in the wrong place

If roots are lifting pavement, approaching a foundation, interfering with utilities, or threatening another tree, begin with diagnosis rather than chemical treatment. Root cutting and other root-zone injuries can seriously stress or destabilize a tree, particularly when large structural roots are involved.

For conflicts involving a building, retaining wall, road, utility, valuable tree, or large structural root, arrange a certified arborist assessment. Depending on the findings, the appropriate response may be monitoring, redesigning or repairing hardscape, installing a properly designed root barrier, carefully pruning eligible roots, or removing the tree. Large-root cutting should not be treated as a routine DIY project.

A dead stump is producing shoots

For an unwanted dead stump or woody regrowth, mechanical removal is usually the most straightforward option. Stump grinding, excavation, or professional removal can eliminate the remaining wood without spreading a soil contaminant.

Where mechanical removal is impractical, a labeled triclopyr stump-and-brush herbicide may be an option for some eligible woody plants. This is not a recommendation for every stump or every product. The current label must specifically permit the target plant, location, cut-stump method, rate, timing, and any retreatment. Some labels also warn that adjacent trees connected by shared or grafted roots may be injured.

A cut-stump treatment, when permitted, is applied to the freshly cut stump or other tissue specified by the label. It is not the same as broadcasting herbicide or Epsom salt into the surrounding soil. Glyphosate products also differ substantially in formulation and label permissions; never assume that any product containing glyphosate or triclopyr is suitable.

Roots are affecting a sewer or drainage line

Root intrusion requires inspection, not a root-killing recipe. A plumbing professional can use a sewer camera to determine whether the problem is tree-root intrusion, a cracked pipe, a collapsed section, a blockage, or another defect.

A chemical treatment cannot repair a damaged pipe or establish whether the tree is the source of the problem. Arrange a sewer-camera inspection before deciding what to do. Depending on the findings, the lasting repair may involve clearing the line, repairing or replacing the damaged section, or addressing the tree and pipe together.

Roots are lifting a sidewalk or driveway

Killing roots under hardscape can create a second problem: removing support may leave the tree unstable while the pavement remains damaged. Have the tree and the hardscape evaluated together. Possible solutions include correcting drainage or grading, redesigning a section of pavement, relocating the walkway, installing an engineered barrier where appropriate, or removing the tree when the risk and site conditions justify it.

If Epsom salt has already been applied

Stop adding it. Do not try to “flush out” the soil with indiscriminate watering, particularly on compacted sites or near drains, streams, foundations, wells, or septic systems. Excess water can carry dissolved minerals into places you did not intend to treat and can cause runoff or erosion.

Symptoms such as leaf scorch, wilting, yellowing, stunted growth, and dieback do not prove that Epsom salt worked. They can result from drought, poor drainage, disease, root damage, other salts, or several stresses at once.

  1. Record what was applied, approximately how much, where, and when.
  2. Stop further applications and remove any unused material from the root zone.
  3. Arrange a soil test that includes soluble salts or electrical conductivity where available.
  4. Ask a local extension service, soil professional, or arborist how the result should be interpreted for that soil and plant species.
  5. Follow site-specific advice on drainage and leaching. Remediation depends on soil texture, rainfall, drainage, salt concentration, and the affected plants.

A soluble-salts soil test kit can help investigate suspected salt damage, but it is a diagnostic aid—not a treatment and not proof that a tree-root treatment was successful.

A safer decision tree

  1. Is the target a living tree? Do not try to kill its roots with Epsom salt. Identify the conflict and obtain arboricultural advice when structures, utilities, valuable trees, or major roots are involved.
  2. Is it a dead stump or woody regrowth? Consider mechanical removal first. If using a chemical product, choose one whose current label specifically covers the target and cut-stump method.
  3. Could desirable trees share or be grafted to the same root system? Avoid chemical treatment until the risk has been assessed.
  4. Has salt already been applied? Stop treatment and test soluble salts or electrical conductivity before adding amendments or large amounts of water.
  5. Is plumbing involved? Arrange an inspection rather than pouring an unapproved substance down a drain.

Bottom line

Epsom salt is not a proven selective way to kill tree roots, and using enough to injure roots can damage the surrounding soil and plants. Do not use a homemade Epsom-salt recipe, inject it into a tree, or pour it into plumbing. Diagnose the situation first: use an arborist for living-tree and structural conflicts, mechanical removal for many stumps, exact-label pesticide use only where permitted, and a sewer-camera inspection for suspected pipe intrusion.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Epsom salt kill tree roots?

No. Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate, and extension guidance does not establish it as a selective tree-root killer. Excess magnesium sulfate can disrupt nutrient uptake and damage nearby plants and soil.

What should I do if I already put Epsom salt around a tree?

Do not add more. Record the amount and location, then arrange a soil test that includes soluble salts or electrical conductivity. Get local advice before attempting leaching or other remediation.

What can I use instead of Epsom salt on a stump?

For a dead stump, mechanical removal or stump grinding is often the clearest option. A chemical product may be used only when its current label specifically permits the target, site, and cut-stump method.

How do I deal with tree roots in a sewer line?

Arrange a sewer-camera inspection or qualified plumbing assessment. Root intrusion may be a symptom of a cracked, collapsed, or otherwise defective pipe, which a chemical treatment cannot repair.

The Bottom Line

Do not use Epsom salt to kill tree roots. It is magnesium sulfate, not an established selective root killer, and excess application can create soil and plant-health problems. Match the remedy to the situation: arborist assessment for living trees and structural roots, mechanical stump removal where practical, exact-label treatment for eligible stumps, and professional sewer inspection for pipe intrusion.
