How to Use Dulux Trade Colour and Contrast for More Inclusive Commercial Spaces

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Dulux Trade’s inclusive-design resources can help you plan colour and contrast so important features are easier to distinguish and spaces are easier to interpret. They are planning aids, not a substitute for observing the finished room or checking the project against current UK requirements.

Use the Colour & Contrast Design Guide to explore schemes, then test physical samples in the actual finishes, lighting and furnishings. Treat the resulting palette as one part of a wider design process for people with visual impairments, neurodivergent people, people living with dementia and everyone else using the building.

What Dulux Trade’s inclusive-design resources provide

Dulux Trade presents colour as a practical design consideration for commercial environments rather than a decorative afterthought. Its Inclusive Design for Commercial Spaces material offers ready-to-use palettes and discusses varied user needs, including neurodivergent people and people living with dementia. The June 2025 commercial brochure identifies offices, education, healthcare, hospitality and residential settings as the sectors in scope.

The underlying idea is straightforward: differences in colour and lightness can make walls, doors, circulation routes and other building elements easier to identify. Dulux Trade’s Colour and Contrast Design Guide states: “Using colour and contrast to maximum effect can enhance spatial awareness and navigation, particularly for those with visual impairments; aiding in the identification of key building features and contributing to safety.” That is the manufacturer’s design rationale, not a promise that paint alone will make every building accessible or that every person will perceive a scheme in the same way.

What the guide can and cannot do

  • It can suggest palettes and show how colour relationships may support orientation, zoning and feature identification.
  • It can help a team discuss user needs before finishes are ordered.
  • It cannot inspect your room, account for every reflection or shadow, or certify compliance with a building regulation or standard.
  • It cannot replace decisions about lighting, signs, tactile information, door hardware, floor transitions, acoustics, furniture or staff procedures.

Use the Colour & Contrast Design Guide as a planning workflow

Dulux Trade describes the digital tool as an interactive way to test room sets, including learning and workplace environments. You can apply a pre-designed scheme, use an existing colour approach or create a new one, then save, share or print the result. The tool also flags choices and positions that Dulux Trade considers consistent with Equality Act visual-contrast guidance. Those flags are vendor guidance, not independent validation or legal sign-off.

  1. Define the room and users. Record the room’s purpose, expected occupants, movement routes and tasks. Note whether people need to find a reception desk, classroom entrance, bathroom, lift lobby, treatment room or quiet area without relying on verbal directions.
  2. Choose a room set. Start with the closest learning, workplace or other available room set to make the main surfaces visible in context. A room set gives a better starting point than comparing isolated colour chips.
  3. Map critical features. Identify the wall planes, doors, frames, skirtings, handrails, columns, counters and signs that must be found or distinguished. Decide which elements should recede and which should be visually prominent.
  4. Apply a pre-designed or new scheme. Try one of the prepared palettes first, then adjust it for your wayfinding logic, brand constraints and maintenance needs. Keep the number of competing accent colours under control so a highlight remains meaningful.
  5. Check each transition. Look at adjoining surfaces rather than judging a colour by itself. A door that is meant to stand out may disappear if its leaf, frame and adjacent wall have similar lightness under the installed lighting.
  6. Save and circulate the proposal. Save, share or print the scheme for the architect, interior designer, facilities team and access consultant. Record the intended location and role of each colour so a later substitution does not erase the contrast strategy.
  7. Validate in the real space. Before approval, place physical samples on the actual substrates and review them at different times of day and with the specified artificial lighting. Resolve discrepancies between the digital view and the built environment before ordering the full quantity.

Designing contrast for navigation, not just decoration

Contrast is a relationship between adjacent elements. It can help a person notice a doorway, follow a route or distinguish a counter from its background, but the result depends on viewing distance, glare, shadows, surface texture, lighting and the person’s vision. A high-contrast feature in one location can become confusing if every surface is treated as an alert.

Give important elements a clear visual role

  • Doors and frames: Decide whether the leaf, frame or wall should be the strongest cue. A consistent rule across a floor makes destinations easier to learn.
  • Circulation routes: Use a restrained change in wall, floor or skirting colour to reinforce a route, while keeping trip hazards and transitions physically safe.
  • Stairs and level changes: Colour can help reveal an edge, but it does not replace compliant nosings, handrails, lighting or tactile warnings.
  • Signs and information points: Provide adequate contrast between text, symbols and their background, then check viewing height, glare and illumination. Paint contrast around a sign does not guarantee that its lettering is readable.
  • Furniture and fittings: Check counters, seating, sanitaryware and handrails against the wall or floor behind them. A fitting that blends into its background may be difficult to locate.

Use zoning carefully

Colour zoning can support memory and orientation when a zone has a stable purpose, such as a waiting area, teaching room or staff-only route. Keep the code simple and repeat it consistently on doors, walls, signs and plans. Too many unrelated accent colours can create visual noise, particularly for people who are sensitive to busy environments. A quieter base palette with a few deliberate cues is usually easier to maintain than a different colour for every room.

Applying the approach across commercial sectors

The same palette will not suit every building. The task, lighting, cleaning regime and user group alter what should be emphasised. Use the following as a briefing framework, then test the details with the project team.

Sector Useful colour questions Checks before specification
Offices Can visitors distinguish reception, meeting rooms, lifts and escape routes from general circulation? Review daylight and screen glare, open-plan sightlines, glass partitions and changes between public and staff areas.
Education Can pupils, staff and visitors identify classroom clusters, toilets, exits and quieter spaces? Check age-appropriate cues, durable finishes, display boards, changing furniture and the effect of strong daylight in corridors.
Healthcare Are reception points, treatment rooms, waiting areas and sanitary facilities easy to find without increasing anxiety? Coordinate colour with clinical lighting, cleaning chemicals, infection-control finishes, privacy requirements and signs.
Hospitality Can guests locate entrances, lifts, toilets, dining areas and service points in unfamiliar surroundings? Assess low-light conditions, reflective finishes, patterned carpets, decorative lighting and changes between day and evening operation.
Residential Do residents recognise their own door, shared facilities and safe routes while retaining a domestic feel? Check consistency between floors, visual clutter, furniture placement, dementia-inclusive cues and the effect of personal belongings.

Why physical samples are essential

Dulux Trade warns that colours shown electronically, laminated or printed by others can differ significantly from the intended colour and says it cannot guarantee an exact match from the guide. Before decorating, check a colour chip or a small amount of mixed product on the actual surface. A paint tester or other small physical sample is useful for this stage, provided it is assessed in context.

Sample every significant surface or substrate, not just a plasterboard wall. Substrate colour, surface texture, sheen, furnishings, room shape, room size and lighting can all change the apparent colour. View samples from the approach distance and from the seated and standing eye levels relevant to the room. Check them in daylight and under the installed artificial lighting, including emergency or reduced-light conditions where those affect navigation.

Record the approved colour, finish, substrate and location in the finish schedule. If a contractor proposes a substitute product or sheen, repeat the contrast review rather than assuming the replacement will look equivalent.

Standards, guidance and the limits of the 30-LRV recommendation

Dulux Trade’s current commercial colour services page says its support is informed by Approved Document M, BS 8300-2:2018 and PAS 6463. It also names dementia-inclusive palettes, neurodiversity-informed zoning and contrast strategies as areas of support. These references are UK-oriented. Confirm the current edition, scope and applicability for your nation, building type, tenure and planning route before relying on any of them.

An older Dulux Trade literature document describes an ideal difference of at least 30 Light Reflectance Value (LRV) points between adjoining critical surfaces and explains LRV as a 0–99 index. That document is a secondary source referring to earlier editions of guidance. Treat 30 points as an older Dulux Trade recommendation to investigate, not as a current universal legal threshold. The precise requirement, any exceptions and the way a value should be measured must be checked against the current official guidance and the project’s jurisdiction.

Build compliance review into the project

  1. Ask the design team or access consultant which current documents apply and which surfaces are considered critical.
  2. Confirm how the proposed contrast will be assessed, including the measurement method, finish and lighting conditions.
  3. Coordinate the colour strategy with door hardware, glazing manifestations, stair details, tactile signs, floor surfaces and escape provisions.
  4. Keep dated samples, approvals and test results with the specification so substitutions can be reviewed.
  5. Inspect the completed work. Construction tolerances, adjacent trades, reflections and installed furniture can alter the intended relationship.

Common failure modes and practical fixes

A digital scheme looks right but the room feels flat

Cause: The screen or printout does not reproduce the paint accurately, or two surfaces that looked different on screen have similar lightness in the room.

Fix: Apply physical samples to both surfaces, view them under the installed lighting and adjust the pair rather than relying on the display.

Every feature is highlighted

Cause: Accent colours have been used for branding, furniture, doors and signs without a hierarchy.

Fix: Reserve the strongest contrast for features that support orientation or safety. Use a calmer base palette elsewhere and document the rule for future refurbishments.

Contrast disappears after furniture installation

Cause: Shelving, screens, artwork or curtains cover the wall area that carried the cue, or a counter front blends into its new background.

Fix: Review the furnished room, not an empty shell. Move the cue, alter the adjacent finish or specify a contrasting fitting where the route requires it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Glare makes a theoretically contrasting surface hard to read

Cause: Glossy paint, polished flooring, glazing or strong directional light creates reflections that mask edges.

A scheme works for one user group but overwhelms another

Cause: Excessive pattern, saturated accents or inconsistent zoning can increase cognitive load even when surfaces are distinguishable.

Fix: Involve representative users where possible, simplify the palette, repeat cues consistently and provide a legible alternative such as clear signs or staff support.

Project checklist before ordering paint

  • Have the building’s user groups and priority destinations been documented?
  • Are doors, frames, walls, floors, stairs, counters, handrails and signs assigned clear visual roles?
  • Has the Colour & Contrast Design Guide output been saved and circulated with its assumptions?
  • Have physical samples been tested on every relevant substrate and finish?
  • Have daylight, artificial light, glare, furnishings and viewing distances been checked?
  • Has an access professional or suitably competent designer confirmed which current UK guidance applies?
  • Are approved colours, sheens, locations and substitution rules recorded in the finish schedule?
  • Will the completed, furnished space be inspected before handover?

Where Dulux Trade’s advice ends

Dulux Trade’s resources are useful for generating and communicating a colour strategy. They help a project team think about visual hierarchy, navigation and varied needs before finishes are fixed. The responsibility for an inclusive outcome remains broader: the finished building must be assessed in its actual conditions, coordinated with other accessibility features and checked against current, project-specific requirements.

Use the branded palette as a tested design hypothesis. Approve it only after physical sampling, user-focused review and an independent compliance check appropriate to the location and building.
