The most useful option is to add them to compost. If you spread them directly around an evergreen, keep the layer thin and broken up, and fertilize the plant itself only when a soil test supports it.
Do coffee grounds fertilize evergreens?
Spent coffee grounds contain small amounts of nutrients, but that does not make them a complete or predictable fertilizer. University of Maine Cooperative Extension describes them as best used in moderate amounts as a soil conditioner or as an ingredient in compost (University of Maine Cooperative Extension).
There is no established evergreen-specific trial outcome showing that coffee grounds improve growth. An evergreen’s needs depend on its species, condition, and soil; grounds alone cannot diagnose or correct a nutrient problem.
Best way to reuse grounds: compost them
Add used grounds to an active compost pile as one ingredient among other materials. University of Maine and University of Nebraska–Lincoln Extension both recommend composting as a practical reuse route (Nebraska Extension guidance). The guidance does not establish a grounds-only compost recipe or a dose of grounds-based fertilizer.

How to apply grounds directly around an evergreen
If you choose a surface application instead of composting, use a thin, broken-up layer rather than a thick mat. Nebraska Extension’s October 2024 guidance sets a maximum layer of one-half inch and recommends covering it with leaves or shredded bark. This is practical regional guidance, not a universal dose for every plant or landscape.
Fine grounds can compact and impede the movement of air and moisture. Oregon State University Extension also advises keeping a surface layer thin and broken up because dried grounds may repel water (Oregon State University Extension response).

- Spread grounds sparingly over the soil surface; do not pile them against the trunk or stems.
- Break up clumps so the grounds do not form a dense, continuous layer.
- Cover the thin layer with leaves or shredded bark.
What if you want to mix grounds into the soil?
An Oregon State Extension response advises adding nitrogen fertilizer when grounds are worked directly into soil. It does not specify an evergreen species, fertilizer formulation, rate, or soil-test result, so this is not a blanket recommendation to add nitrogen. For a particular evergreen, follow local soil-test guidance before adding fertilizer.
Will coffee grounds make soil acidic?
No dependable soil-acidifying effect should be expected from spent grounds. University of Maine Cooperative Extension reports a pH range of 6.5–6.8 for spent grounds; Penn State Extension gives an approximate value of 6.8. These near-neutral figures do not support using brewed grounds to lower garden soil pH (Penn State Extension).

If an evergreen is struggling or you suspect the soil pH is unsuitable, identify the plant and get an appropriate soil test. Nebraska Extension identifies elemental sulfur as its preferred pH-lowering product when a soil test supports the need, but that regional guidance should not be treated as a universal prescription. Follow recommendations from a local extension service or soil-testing laboratory.

Do not fertilize every evergreen automatically. University of Maryland Extension advises fertilizing evergreens only when a soil-test report recommends it (University of Maryland Extension guidance). A soil report can help distinguish a nutrient need from a pH issue or another cause of poor condition.
