Yes—plain baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) can do far more around a home than leaven food. Used dry, dissolved in warm water, or worked into a light paste, it is commonly suggested for refrigerator odors, shoe and carpet deodorizing, laundry, spills, and many routine hard-surface jobs.

The ideas below translate manufacturer household-cleaning guidance into practical tasks. They are suggestions, not independent proof that baking soda works on every odor or finish. Read care labels, test an inconspicuous spot, and use only the method appropriate for the material.

What baking soda can—and cannot—do

Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate, a mild alkaline household powder sold for cooking as well as cleaning and deodorizing. Its useful roles in the home are simple: a dry powder can help absorb odors, while a damp mixture can loosen some grime and spills so they can be wiped away. It is not a disinfectant, a guaranteed stain remover, or a substitute for a product specified by a manufacturer for a delicate finish.

Arm & Hammer’s product information and cleaning guides present the uses as household tips. The strongest evidence available for this guide is therefore what that manufacturer recommends, not a comparative laboratory test. Results can vary with the odor, soil, surface, humidity, and how long the powder remains in place.

Choose a practical format before you start

Format Useful for What to consider
Small box Refrigerator or freezer odor control and occasional small jobs Easy to place on a shelf; replace refrigerator/freezer baking soda monthly for optimal freshness, according to Arm & Hammer.
Resealable bag Carpet, furniture, laundry, and other larger jobs Stores a larger quantity while limiting moisture exposure; no performance advantage over a box has been established.
Shaker Controlled sprinkling on shoes, rugs, or other suitable fabric Helps distribute a thin layer; application convenience, not greater cleaning power, is the reason to choose it.

You may also want a clean sponge, a bowl for a solution, absorbent cloths, and a vacuum. Use a vacuum only where the material and the vacuum manufacturer allow fine powder.

Refrigerator, freezer, and food-storage odors

1. Keep an open box in the refrigerator

Place a box of baking soda where air can circulate around it. Arm & Hammer identifies this as an odor-control use and recommends replacing refrigerator baking soda once a month for optimal freshness. That monthly interval is the manufacturer’s advice, not an independently established universal schedule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Deodorize a freezer

Use the same open-box approach in a freezer. Remove spoiled food and wipe visible spills first; powder cannot compensate for a leaking container or food left past its safe storage time.

3. Freshen refrigerator shelves and drawers

After removing food, wipe shelves or crisper drawers with warm water containing baking soda, then wipe again with clean water and dry. Check the appliance manual before using any solution on coated glass, wood, or specialty liners.

4. Address a smelly crisper bin

Wash the empty bin, dry it completely, and leave a small dish or suitable box of baking soda nearby while the bin is in use. Do not scatter powder directly onto produce.

5. Refresh a lunch cooler or insulated food container

Wipe the empty interior with a mild baking-soda solution, rinse the cloth or sponge, and allow the cooler to dry fully with its lid open. Confirm that the liner’s care instructions permit water-based cleaning.

Kitchen surfaces, cookware, and spills

6. Lift a fresh counter spill

Blot liquid first. Apply a little baking soda to a damp sponge or make a thin paste with water, wipe gently, and remove residue with a clean damp cloth. Granite, marble, sealed stone, and specialty laminates may have different instructions, so consult the surface maker and spot-test.

7. Clean a stainless-steel sink

Sprinkle baking soda onto a wet sponge, wipe in the sink’s existing grain, and rinse. Do not assume every polished, coated, or colored finish is scratch-proof; use the least abrasive pressure that removes the soil.

8. Tackle a stuck-on stovetop splash

Once the cooktop is cool, cover the residue with a damp baking-soda paste, let it soften briefly, and wipe with a non-scratching cloth. Follow the cooktop manual for glass, induction, and specialty coatings.

9. Reduce odors in a microwave

Wipe the interior with warm water and baking soda on a soft sponge, then wipe with clean water and leave the door open to dry. Never spread dry powder into vents or operate the microwave with cleaning material inside.

10. Deodorize a cutting board

Wash the board according to its material instructions, then wipe it with a baking-soda solution and rinse. Baking soda does not replace a food-safety sanitizing step when one is required.

11. Soak a stained pan

Cover stuck food with warm water and baking soda, allow it to loosen, and wash with the pan maker’s approved tool. Avoid aggressive scrubbing on nonstick, enamel, or seasoned surfaces.

12. Freshen a dish rack or draining mat

Wash and dry the rack or mat, then wipe it with a baking-soda solution. Rinse thoroughly so powder does not remain where clean dishes will sit.

Laundry and washable fabrics

13. Add baking soda to a routine wash

Manufacturer checklist materials promote baking soda for laundry. Use it only in a way compatible with your washer, detergent, and fabric-care labels; do not treat it as a replacement for detergent or a guaranteed stain remover.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

14. Reduce odor in gym clothing

Wash odor-prone garments promptly according to their labels. A baking-soda laundry approach may help with routine freshness, but technical fabrics, elastic, and waterproof treatments can react differently, so test a small load first.

15. Freshen towels

Use the laundry method permitted by the towel label, then dry completely. Persistent sour odor usually indicates that the washer, hamper, or drying process also needs cleaning and ventilation.

16. Deodorize a washable hamper liner

Wash the liner, sprinkle or wipe with baking soda only if its care instructions allow it, and remove all powder before putting clean clothes inside.

Shoes, closets, and stored gear

17. Deodorize fabric shoes

Sprinkle a light amount inside dry shoes, leave it long enough to absorb odor, then shake or vacuum it out before wearing. Keep powder away from eyes and avoid inhaling a cloud of dust.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

18. Use less often on leather shoes

Arm & Hammer cautions that frequent baking-soda use can absorb oils in leather. For leather footwear, use it sparingly, remove it completely, and follow the leather-care instructions instead of making it a daily treatment.

19. Freshen a shoe cabinet

Clean the cabinet, let it dry, and place an open container of baking soda on a stable shelf where it cannot spill onto footwear. Ventilation and dry shoes remain the primary controls.

20. Treat removable sports-gear liners

For washable, removable liners, use a small amount of baking soda as a deodorizing aid and then launder as directed. Do not put powder into helmets, protective padding, or electronics unless the manufacturer specifically permits it.

Carpets, rugs, upholstery, and furniture

21. Deodorize a carpet

Arm & Hammer materials suggest sprinkling baking soda on carpet to absorb odors and vacuuming it up. Test a hidden area first, keep the layer light, and vacuum thoroughly. Moisture, delicate fibers, and some vacuum designs make this unsuitable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

22. Freshen an area rug

Check the rug maker’s care guidance before applying powder. Natural fibers, hand-knotted rugs, and unstable dyes deserve special caution; a professional cleaner may be safer.

23. Reduce odor on upholstered furniture

For removable, colorfast upholstery that permits powder cleaning, apply a light sprinkling, wait, and vacuum with the appropriate attachment. Never grind powder into fabric or use it on wet upholstery.

24. Refresh a fabric cushion cover

Remove the cover if possible and follow its washing label. If the label permits dry powder, treat the cover separately so residue does not enter the cushion filling.

25. Deodorize a fabric pet-rest cover

Wash the cover according to its label and keep pets away while powder is present. Vacuum all residue before returning the cover to the animal.

Bathroom and general hard-surface jobs

26. Wipe a bathroom sink basin

Use baking soda on a damp sponge for routine soil, then rinse and dry. Test first on cultured stone, acrylic, colored enamel, or other coated basins.

27. Clean a bathtub or shower floor

Apply a damp paste to soap-film areas, wipe gently, and rinse fully. Avoid abrasive pressure on fiberglass and finishes that the manufacturer says require a nonabrasive cleaner.

28. Freshen tile surfaces

Use a baking-soda solution on suitable glazed tile, wipe, and rinse. Grout, natural stone, and sealers have different tolerances; follow their care instructions rather than assuming one method fits all.

29. Wipe a bathroom wastebasket

Empty and wash the bin, wipe it with a baking-soda solution, and dry it before replacing the liner. This addresses residue and odor at the source.

Other odor hotspots

30. Deodorize a kitchen trash can

Wash and dry the empty can, then place a small amount of baking soda beneath a fresh liner or in a contained dish. Replace it when it becomes damp or soiled.

31. Freshen a recycling bin

Remove containers, rinse the bin if its material allows, dry it, and use a contained amount of baking soda to reduce residual smells. Cleaning the bin matters more than adding powder to an active leak.

32. Reduce closet mustiness

Improve airflow, remove damp items, and place baking soda in an open container on a secure shelf. Persistent dampness requires moisture control; powder alone will not solve a water problem.

33. Freshen a basement storage area

Use baking soda only after addressing leaks, condensation, or wet materials. A container can help with ordinary odors in a dry area, but visible mold or continuing dampness needs a different remedy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

34. Deodorize fabric in a vehicle

For removable, colorfast floor mats or fabric surfaces, follow the vehicle maker’s cleaning instructions, apply a light amount if permitted, and vacuum completely. Keep powder out of switches, vents, seat-belt mechanisms, and electronics.

Five safe application methods

  1. Dry placement: Put a box or dish in an odor area where it will stay dry and cannot tip over.
  2. Light sprinkle: Apply a thin layer to a suitable dry fabric, wait, then remove every visible trace with a suitable vacuum.
  3. Damp sponge: Dissolve baking soda in warm water, wipe the approved hard surface, then wipe with clean water and dry.
  4. Soft paste: Combine baking soda with enough water to make a spreadable paste for a localized spill; use gentle pressure and rinse residue away.
  5. Soak: For washable items or cookware that permit it, use warm water with baking soda to loosen soil before the normal wash.

These methods are intentionally general because the correct amount depends on the task and material. A care label or manufacturer manual takes priority over a household tip.

Safety, storage, and limits

Poison Control describes sodium bicarbonate as a mild alkali. Its guidance states: “Mild alkalis like sodium bicarbonate are not caustic and are generally safe to use around children and pets.” That applies to using it as a cleaning ingredient, not to swallowing it.

Too much baking soda ingested can cause serious toxicity. Keep the product in its original container, close the container after use, and store it out of children’s reach. Never advise or attempt ingestion as a home remedy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Poison Control also gives this direct instruction: “Never mix household cleaning products!” Keep baking soda separate from bleach, acids, ammonia, drain cleaners, and other products unless a manufacturer’s directions explicitly authorize a combination. If a cleaning mixture produces fumes, heat, or an unexpected reaction, leave the area and seek appropriate emergency guidance.

Stop using a method if a finish changes color, becomes cloudy, feels rough, or retains powder. For valuable, antique, porous, damp, or labeled “professional clean only” materials, use the stated care method instead.
