AI can help track construction progress from site photos when the images are captured consistently, tied to a date and a location on the project, and compared with plans, BIM, or schedule data. Use the resulting progress views and exceptions to guide a project team’s review—not as automatic proof that work is complete or ready for payment. A general-purpose chatbot looking at a handful of unlocated photos cannot reliably verify schedule progress.

What AI-assisted photo tracking can—and cannot—do

A useful progress record connects three things: what was visible, when it was captured, and where it was captured. Construction platforms can organize those observations against a floor plan or model, then help teams compare site conditions with design or schedule expectations. That makes it easier to spot areas to review and follow change over time.

The tools differ in their inputs and reporting detail. Buildots describes AI comparison of site captures with BIM and schedule data, with progress categories such as complete, in progress, or at risk. OpenSpace describes progress workflows organized by trade, floor, and zone, as well as 3D model overlays on 360° imagery for reviewing as-built conditions against design. These are vendor-described capabilities, not independent accuracy comparisons.

AI flags should be treated as prompts for inspection and discussion. OpenSpace describes its progress tracking as human-verified. A project team still needs to check the relevant work, account for what a photo cannot show, and resolve discrepancies before using a progress status for formal reporting, certification, or payment.

Build a repeatable site-photo workflow

1. Decide what needs to be captured

Set a routine by project area, floor, trade, and viewpoint. Choose a cadence that suits the reporting and coordination needs of the job, and make it clear who is responsible for each capture. Repeatable viewpoints make comparisons more meaningful than sporadic photos taken from changing locations.

Before capture begins, agree on access, naming or location conventions, and how teams will handle areas that are inaccessible or not ready to document. A missing image should be visible as a coverage gap, not mistaken for evidence that nothing changed.

2. Choose capture equipment for the job

A smartphone can be part of a capture workflow; a 360° camera is not a universal requirement. OpenSpace describes smartphone, 360° camera, and drone inputs. Buildots lists 360° cameras, drones, and laser scans. Those are each vendor’s described input options, not proof that every device works with every platform or project configuration.

Capture approach What the cited vendor material establishes What to confirm for your project
Smartphone photos OpenSpace describes smartphone capture as an input option. Whether the selected workflow supports your phone, capture routine, and required location mapping.
360° camera OpenSpace and Buildots both describe 360° camera capture. Which camera models, processing steps, and project configurations are supported. The cited material does not establish compatibility for a particular model.
Drone imagery OpenSpace and Buildots describe drones among their inputs. Where aerial capture is appropriate, and what permissions, safety rules, and platform configuration apply.
Laser scans Buildots lists laser scans as an input. Whether this input is needed and supported for the project’s intended reporting workflow.

Do not choose equipment based only on a vendor’s general list of inputs. Confirm compatibility, required capture procedures, and any project-specific setup with the platform provider. For procurement, verify a camera model against the intended product rather than assuming that a device described as a 360° camera will work.

3. Associate every capture with time and place

A photo is much more useful for progress tracking when it is tied to its capture time and a known location in the building. Autodesk’s OpenSpace integration page describes site images mapped to a floor plan by time and space; OpenSpace also describes imagery linked to plans and models where applicable.

Check that captures land in the correct floor, zone, and viewpoint before relying on a comparison. Mislocated or incomplete imagery can make a real change hard to interpret—or make an unchanged area appear different simply because the camera position changed.

4. Compare observations with the project baseline

Where the workflow supports it, connect the visual record to the relevant plan, BIM elements, or schedule activities. Buildots says its AI compares site captures with BIM and schedule data. OpenSpace describes progress tracking by trade, floor, and zone, and model overlays that let teams review visible as-built conditions against design.

The comparison is only as useful as the project information and mapping behind it. Confirm that the schedule, model, and location structure reflect the current project baseline, and understand what level of detail the platform can report. A zone-level visual status is not necessarily evidence that every element or activity assigned to that zone is complete.

5. Review flags with the people responsible for the work

Use dashboards or classifications to prioritize questions: Is an area reported as complete actually ready for the next trade? Is work in progress where the schedule expects it? Does an apparent exception reflect a real delay, a capture gap, or an outdated model or schedule?

Have the relevant project team inspect the underlying imagery and resolve the status before updating formal records. The cited GPT-4 Vision study found that the model it examined could identify construction stages, materials, and machinery in aerial imagery, but struggled with precise object localization and segmentation. That finding applies to the studied task and model; it should not be generalized to every current vision model or commercial construction platform.

6. Turn reviewed findings into project actions

Once a team confirms an exception, connect it to the project’s normal coordination process: record the location, describe the issue, assign an owner, and track follow-up. OpenSpace describes connecting visual notes and issues with Autodesk and Procore workflows. It also describes bringing schedules from tools such as P6, Asta Powerproject, Microsoft Project, or Excel into its tracking workflow. Verify the current integration and required configuration for the specific project rather than assuming every connection is available by default.

Evaluation area Questions to ask
Capture options Can the project use its planned devices and capture routine? What setup or training is needed for each input?
Plan and model mapping How are images assigned to floors, zones, or model locations? How does the team correct a misplaced capture?
Schedule linkage Can the project connect its schedule, and what schedule structure or data preparation is required?
Reporting granularity Can the team review progress at the trade, floor, zone, or element level it needs? Which levels are supported in the project’s configuration?
Review controls Can reviewers inspect the source imagery behind a status, correct errors, and distinguish an AI flag from a verified project decision?
Time to review What is the full capture-to-review process, including upload, processing, mapping, and human checks?
Existing workflows Which issue, coordination, and project-management tools can be connected, and what configuration is required?
Setup and security What project setup, user permissions, data handling, retention, and security requirements apply? Confirm these with the vendor and your project’s policies.

Buildots says setup usually takes a few weeks depending on project size and that capture processing is typically 24 to 36 hours; these are Buildots’ published timing claims, not an independent comparison. OpenSpace describes a different capture and image-review flow, so compare the complete workflow rather than treating those figures as directly comparable.

What a practical pilot should prove

Before relying on an AI-assisted process for regular reporting, run it on a defined part of the project and check whether it works for your team’s real capture conditions. A useful pilot should establish:

  • Whether staff can capture the planned areas and viewpoints at the required cadence.
  • Whether images are consistently associated with the correct date and project location.
  • Whether the plan, BIM, and schedule information available to the platform matches the team’s reporting needs.
  • Whether reviewers can trace a reported status back to imagery and resolve exceptions.
  • Whether processing time, integrations, setup, and security requirements fit the project’s workflow.

Ask vendors to demonstrate the workflow using representative project areas and inputs, and document how the team will handle missing coverage, capture errors, and disagreements with a reported status. Do not treat vendor scale figures or testimonials as proof of accuracy on your project. For context, OpenSpace’s general-contractor product page, accessed in 2026, lists “77 billion+ sq ft” of structured visual data and “110,000+ projects” across 132 countries; these are OpenSpace-published platform figures, not independent evidence of a particular project’s results.

Why mapped, repeatable records matter

The value is not simply having more pictures. A record that teams can revisit by time and location can support coordination and make changes easier to discuss. In a 2018 Autodesk University case description, a historical workflow used machine learning on narrated jobsite walks to create searchable progress documentation and automatically index BIM 360 photos. The description reports no numeric progress-tracking outcome, so it is an example of documentation workflow rather than proof of measured schedule improvement.

For a construction team, the practical test is whether the process produces evidence that is findable, comparable, and reviewable—and whether the team can turn a confirmed observation into a project action.
