How to Use a Wood Chipper Safely: Setup, Feeding, and Shutdown

A practical, safety-first guide to preparing, feeding, and shutting down a wood chipper—with clear reminders that controls and procedures vary by model.

Use a wood chipper only after reading the exact model’s operating manual and receiving appropriate training. Chippers differ in their controls, safe operator position, and procedures, so general guidance cannot replace the manufacturer’s instructions or applicable workplace rules. The safety guidance below primarily addresses workplace and tree-care chippers; it does not mean every rental or homeowner machine has identical controls.

Why chipper operation requires care

A chipper can pull a person into its infeed or throw material from the machine. OSHA identifies caught-in and struck-by hazards, as well as risks to hearing, eyes, head, and hands. OSHA reported that 39 employees died in chipper accidents from 1996 through 2005; 78 percent of those fatalities involved caught-in incidents. Those are historical totals for that period, not a current annual rate. See OSHA’s 2008 wood chipper hazard bulletin and its 2016 release.

Training matters because safe positioning and feeding procedures vary by machine. NIOSH/CDC advises operators to use the machine’s manual for safe positioning; OSHA likewise emphasizes training and following manufacturer instructions. Do not operate a machine if you have not been trained on its controls and emergency procedures.

Prepare the machine and work area

  • Read the manual and identify the controls. Confirm how the machine starts and stops, how its feed controls work, where emergency shut-offs are, and what material and capacity limits apply. Do not assume a control is in the same place or works the same way as on another chipper.
  • Check the setup before starting. Confirm guards, panels, and covers are secured as the manual directs. Inspect and test safety devices and emergency controls using the maker’s prescribed procedure. OSHA’s chipper machine safety quick card also advises chocking a detached trailer chipper on a slope.
  • Make the area safe. Keep the work zone clear of people and tripping hazards, maintain safe separation from other work, and direct the discharge away from people. Check material for metal or other foreign objects before feeding it. If other workers are feeding material, OSHA recommends a safety watch near emergency shut-off devices.
  • Wear suitable PPE and clothing. OSHA guidance identifies hearing and eye protection, a hard hat, and gloves as relevant protections. Wear close-fitting clothing and footwear suitable for the work; avoid loose clothing that could snag. PPE requirements depend on the task, machine, and jurisdiction. Oregon OSHA’s landscaping and tree-services guide is specific to Oregon and should not be treated as a universal rule.

Start the chipper as its manual directs

Use only the model’s prescribed start procedure. Do not apply a generic throttle, choke, or startup sequence to an unfamiliar machine. Close and latch the disc hood before starting if the manual requires it, and do not start if guards or safety devices are missing, damaged, or not working. Keep bystanders clear and confirm the discharge path is safe before operation.

Feed material without reaching into the hopper

OSHA’s work-practice recommendation is direct: “Stand to the side of the infeed chute when feeding material into the chipper.” The designated safe position and exact sequence still depend on the machine; follow its manual.

  1. Approach from the designated side. Keep hands and feet out of the hopper and away from the infeed mechanism. Never reach into an operating chipper.
  2. Feed material as specified. OSHA’s general guidance recommends feeding branches butt-end first. Do not force oversized or unsuitable material into the machine; follow its stated limits and feeding instructions.
  3. Let the machine take the material. Once feed rollers grab a branch, walk away rather than holding or pushing it. Keep a clear route to move back from the infeed.
  4. Handle short brush without reaching. OSHA recommends placing short branches on longer material or using a longer branch or wooden tool to push material, where the machine’s instructions permit. NIOSH/CDC advises sending small raked debris to a truck, trash can, or bag rather than forcing it into the hopper.
  5. Keep people coordinated. In workplace settings, OSHA recommends keeping workers in close contact and having a safety watch near emergency shut-off devices when others feed material. Agree on signals and stop work if communication is lost.

Stop safely and respond to a jam

Use the machine’s prescribed shutdown controls. If you leave the chipper unattended, OSHA recommends shutting it down and removing the ignition key. Never try to clear a jam, reach into the hopper, or open a cover while cutting components are moving.

Before clearing a blockage or servicing the chipper, stop and de-energize it, prevent unintended restart using the applicable energy-control procedure, and follow the manual’s instructions. OSHA’s logging operations rule states that chipper access covers or doors must not be opened until the drum or disc has completely stopped; that rule applies according to the work operation, not automatically to every use of a chipper. What to check when choosing or using a machine

This is not a brand or model ranking. For a machine you plan to operate, check whether its manual clearly explains the safety controls and procedures, what material and capacity limits it states, and what maintenance it requires. If you cannot find or understand the manual, or cannot identify how to stop the machine in an emergency, do not operate it until those points are resolved.
