Use a pruning saw for branches that are too thick for hand pruners and can be reached and handled safely. On a heavy branch, make two cuts to remove its weight before cutting the remaining stub just outside the branch collar and branch bark ridge. This three-cut method helps prevent bark from tearing; cutting flush against the trunk can damage it.
When to use a pruning saw
A pruning saw is generally suited to branches more than 1 inch in diameter, according to Purdue Extension’s guidance on pruning ornamental trees and shrubs. Treat that as a practical guide, not a universal cutoff: branch weight, tree condition, and whether you can work safely also matter. Use hand pruners for smaller cuts when they can do the job cleanly.
Choose a hand pruning saw intended for pruning, and check its blade and handle before starting. Most pruning saws cut on the pull stroke, but not all do; follow the saw’s design and instructions rather than forcing it in the wrong direction. Keep the blade sharp and the tool in good repair.
How to make a pruning-saw cut
1. Find the branch collar and bark ridge
Before cutting, locate the branch collar—the slightly swollen area where the branch meets the trunk—and the branch bark ridge, the raised line of bark in the crotch above the branch. The final cut belongs just outside these features. Do not cut into the trunk or remove the collar.

2. Remove the weight of a heavy branch
If the branch is too heavy to support by hand, use a three-cut sequence. This keeps the branch’s weight from pulling bark down the trunk as it breaks away.
- Make an underside cut. Saw upward from beneath the branch, a short distance out from the trunk. This first cut should pass only partway through the branch.
- Make a second cut from above, farther out. Saw downward until the outer section separates. The first cut helps stop the falling section from tearing bark toward the trunk. Extension examples place the first cut several inches out; Virginia Tech gives an example of about 12 inches from the trunk, with about 1 inch between the first and second cuts. - Remove the remaining stub. Once the branch section has fallen away, make the final cut just outside the branch collar and branch bark ridge.
3. Make the final cut without cutting flush
For a branch light enough to control, skip the weight-removal cuts and make one careful cut just outside the collar and ridge. For a heavy branch, use the three-cut method first, then make that same final cut on the stub. A flush cut can injure trunk tissue and interfere with the tree’s natural response to the wound, as explained by Colorado State University Extension.

Safety checks before you start
- Wear eye protection while pruning and while handling cut branches or brush.
- Use a sharp, well-maintained saw intended for pruning; keep the branch and your hands clear of the blade’s path.
- Work only within safe reach and with equipment you can control. A longer saw is not a safe substitute for access to an out-of-reach branch.
- Do not use a pole saw near utility lines. If a power line touches a limb, stay clear and contact the power company.
- Keep other people out of the area where cut material could fall.
Wisconsin Horticulture, University of Wisconsin–Madison Extension, advises getting professional help for larger limbs, particularly near buildings or power lines. For large trees, hazardous work, or branches beyond your safe reach or equipment, contact a qualified or certified arborist rather than attempting the cut yourself.
