Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo use a moisture meter, select a meter and setting designed for the material, follow that model’s instructions, and take readings at several representative locations. Treat pin and pinless results differently: pin meters commonly report resistance-based moisture content, while pinless meters often provide relative readings for comparison. Neither one reading nor one number establishes the moisture condition of an entire wall, floor, or building.
Choose a meter for the material and the job
Start with what you are measuring, how deep you need to assess, and whether small pin marks are acceptable. A wood setting is not automatically suitable for drywall, concrete, or other materials; use only materials and modes documented for your meter.

| Type | How it measures | Best fit and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Pin | Electrodes contact the material; FLIR describes this as a typical electrical-resistance measurement. | Useful when a contact reading is appropriate and small holes are acceptable. The reading is associated with the pins’ penetration path. Use the specified material mode and, for wood, the maker’s species correction. FLIR’s explanation of wet and dry meter values and the NWFA Installation Guidelines discuss these distinctions. |
| Pinless | A sensor rests on the surface and assesses an area beneath it; FLIR describes the result as relative. | Useful for quick, non-invasive comparisons. Compare like materials and thicknesses, ideally against a known-dry reference; do not assume the display is an absolute moisture percentage. FLIR’s guidance explains the method. |
| Combination | Offers both pinless and pin measurements, which remain different methods and readings. | Can suit work that needs both comparative screening and pin readings, provided the meter supports the material and the manual’s instructions are followed. Extech documents this arrangement for its MO265; that model is an example, not a universal recommendation. |
Check the device’s supported materials, range, measurement depth, species correction, calibration or check procedure, and probe options before choosing. Depth varies by device: Woodcraft describes up to 3/4 inch as a typical pinless depth for the meters covered in its meter-selection guide, while Extech lists 20–40 mm for its MO257. These figures are not specifications for all meters.

- Define the material and decision. Identify whether you are checking wood, drywall, concrete, or another material, and select a meter and mode documented for it. Do not transfer a reading or setting from one material to another.
- Read the model’s manual. Confirm the material setting, pin depth or sensor-contact requirements, and any calibration-check instructions. For wood, apply the species correction specified by the manufacturer. NWFA explains that species correction compensates for differences in electrical properties for pin meters or density for pinless meters in its Installation Guidelines.
- Check the measurement area and place the meter consistently. For pinless readings, keep the sensor flat on a suitable surface. Avoid comparisons across different materials or thicknesses; they can produce readings that are not meaningfully comparable.
- Take readings at several representative locations. Use the same method and setting, and note each location and mode. With a pinless meter, compare against similar construction and thickness known to be dry rather than treating the display as an absolute percentage.
- Verify consequential decisions. If the result affects an installation, restoration, or inspection, check the applicable product instructions, standard, or qualified professional’s requirements for the accepted method and threshold.
Interpret the number without overreading it
A meter reading describes a measurement at a particular location under that device’s conditions. It does not identify the moisture source or prove that an entire wall, floor, or structure is dry. Surface conditions, material composition, wood species, measurement depth, settings, and calibration all affect how a display should be understood.
#1 Best Overall
- HUMIDITY SENSOR: Our handy meter tool can quickly determine what level of remediation is needed to keep your family safe from black mold. High levels of dampness that go untreated are the leading cause of harmful fungus growth in the home.
- WATER LEAK DETECTOR: Finding the moisture content in your wood or drywall is the first step in early prevention. Continuously check and test suspicious water stains around the house so you can determine whether the area is wet or has already dried. Low, medium and high moisture tones and on-screen icons, Reading HOLD button
- MOISTURE READER: The mold test features large 0.3" high digits in a backlit LCD for quick and easy detecting. Our mildew scanner includes extra 8mm stainless steel pins, a protective cap that doubles as a calibration checker, and a “9V” battery.
- MOLD TESTER: For an accurate test read, stick the stainless steel pins into the surface of what you're measuring. The gauge has a broad range of 5 - 50% for wood and 1.5 - 33% for building materials such as concrete and drywall.
- GENERAL TOOLS: We're a recognized leader in designing and developing specialized precision tools dedicated to delivering exceptional customer service. We encourage artisans and DIYers to work smarter, measure better, and repair more productively.
Pin and pinless readings are not interchangeable. FLIR describes pin readings as typical resistance measurements expressed in %WME and pinless readings as relative. A pin method measures along its penetration path, whereas a pinless sensor averages a field beneath the sensor. Treat any comparison accordingly, not as a direct conversion between methods. FLIR explains the difference here.
Specifications also belong to the individual model. For example, Extech lists a 0.0–100.0 relative scale and a stated measurement depth of 20–40 mm for the MO257. That scale is not a general moisture percentage or a universal specification for pinless meters.

- FIND HIDDEN WALL MOISTURE EARLY — Check suspicious drywall and building surfaces after a leak, water stain, or other moisture concern. Detect abnormal moisture before a small issue develops into more extensive damage and costly repairs
- CHECK BEFORE YOU REPAIR — Don't rely on a wall looking or feeling dry. Use the moisture meter to check questionable areas before painting, repairing, or covering the surface, helping you make decisions based on actual moisture readings.
- CHECK FIREWOOD BEFORE YOU BURN — Test firewood before placing it in your fireplace or wood stove. Knowing the moisture level of your firewood helps you choose wood that is ready for burning and avoid relying on appearance alone.
- PIN-TYPE TESTING FOR DIRECT MEASUREMENTS — The contact pins penetrate the material to measure moisture inside wood and building materials. This makes it useful for checking areas where surface conditions may not tell the whole story.
- ONE TOOL FOR TWO IMPORTANT HOME CHECKS — Keep it ready for two practical jobs: checking walls for hidden moisture and checking firewood before burning. A simple way to make informed decisions before a moisture problem becomes expensive or wood goes into the fireplace.
Check calibration and accessories against the exact model
Some meters support internal calibration checks or use a manufacturer-supplied calibration block. NWFA discusses these checks, species correction, and pin arrangements in its Installation Guidelines. Follow the meter maker’s procedure rather than assuming all models use the same check.
Before buying a calibration block, replacement pins, or probes, confirm compatibility with the precise meter model. A physically similar accessory is not necessarily suitable for your device.
