To use a fireplace safely, first identify the appliance and follow its manual. For a vented wood-burning fireplace, make sure the flue is clear and the damper is fully open before lighting; burn only dry, suitable wood; keep a screen in place; and leave the damper open until all ashes are cool. Stop using the fireplace if smoke enters the room, and arrange a professional inspection at least once a year.
Identify your fireplace before using it
Operating instructions differ among open wood-burning fireplaces, wood stoves, inserts, and gas fireplaces. Find the appliance make and model, read its manual, and follow its directions for fuel, doors, air controls, venting, clearances, and maintenance. Do not apply instructions for an open hearth to a stove, insert, or gas fireplace.
This guide focuses on general safety for vented fireplaces, especially wood-burning open hearths. It does not replace the manufacturer’s instructions, local rules, or an inspection. If you cannot identify the appliance, or the chimney is visibly damaged, blocked, or has a history of smoke spillage, do not light a fire until a qualified professional has evaluated it.
Prepare the fireplace before lighting
- Check the flue and damper. Open the damper fully before lighting. Look up the flue with a flashlight to check that it is open and visibly unobstructed. A closed or blocked flue can send smoke and combustion gases into the room. The Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) also advises checking the damper before starting because reaching it after a fire is lit can expose you to smoke or heat. See CSIA homeowner resources.
- Clear the hearth area. Move curtains, furniture, paper, and other combustible items away from the fireplace. Use a fireplace screen or an approved glass enclosure on an open hearth. Keep children and pets at a safe distance, and supervise the fire.
- Choose suitable firewood. Burn dry, seasoned wood. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says wood burns best below 20% moisture and recommends using a moisture meter to check it. EPA guidance gives at least six months as a general seasoning period; its wood-burning safety toolkit specifies six months for softwood and at least one year for hardwood. Time alone does not guarantee that a particular log is dry. Read EPA’s best wood-burning practices and its wood-burning safety toolkit.
- Check local conditions. No-burn rules and air-quality advisories vary by place and date. Check your local air-quality resources and follow any restrictions before burning.
Start and tend a wood fire
Build a small fire
Use newspaper, dry kindling, or an all-natural fire starter. Never use gasoline, kerosene, charcoal starter, or another accelerant. Start with a small fire, then add split logs gradually as it gets established. Leave space between pieces so air can circulate, and maintain a hot, clean-burning fire rather than letting it smolder.

Burn only approved fuel
Do not burn household rubbish, plastics, foam, painted or pressure-treated wood, plywood, particle board, glued wood, or wet, rotted, or moldy wood. These materials can create hazardous pollution or damage the appliance. Manufactured wax-and-sawdust logs may be intended only for open hearths; check the appliance manual before using one in an insert or stove. Never burn charcoal in a fireplace.
Follow the appliance’s door and air-control instructions
Keep doors closed except when loading or tending a fire if the appliance is designed to have doors. Use its manual to determine the correct door position and how to operate air controls. Do not improvise settings or leave a live fire unattended.

Let the fire go out and handle ashes safely
Do not close the damper while embers or ashes are still warm. EPA advises leaving it open until the ashes are cool to help prevent poisonous gases from accumulating indoors. This can allow heated indoor air to escape, but closing the damper too soon creates a safety risk.
Wait until ashes are fully cool before removing them. Put them in a covered metal container and store it outdoors on a nonflammable surface. Do not place warm ashes in ordinary trash or near combustible materials.

What to do if smoke enters the room
Smoke appearing or smelling indoors during normal operation is a warning sign, not something to ignore. EPA says, “If you regularly see or smell smoke, you may have a problem.” Stop using the wood-burning appliance, open a window, check that the flue is open, and call a qualified installer or chimney professional. Do not use it again while the cause is unknown. EPA’s best wood-burning practices explain this guidance.
Respond to carbon monoxide and chimney-fire risks
If carbon monoxide exposure is possible
Carbon monoxide (CO) is an odorless, colorless gas. Possible poisoning symptoms include headache, dizziness, nausea, weakness, shortness of breath, and confusion. If you suspect exposure, get everyone outside to fresh air immediately and seek medical attention. Do not stay inside to troubleshoot. Install and maintain smoke and CO alarms according to the alarm makers’ directions and applicable codes. EPA advises CO alarms on each level of livable space and monthly testing; its CO questions and answers provide more information.

If you suspect a chimney fire
Evacuate and call emergency services. A chimney fire can damage either a masonry chimney or a factory-built metal chimney. CSIA says a masonry chimney fire may reach around 2,000°F; this is a typical figure, not a measured temperature for every fire. A damaged factory-built metal chimney must not be used and needs replacement. See CSIA’s chimney-fire guidance.

Arrange a professional inspection of the fireplace, chimney, and vent at least annually, and before the heating season if the system has not been checked. A qualified professional can identify cracks, blockages, inadequate clearances, assembly problems, and venting issues that may not be obvious to a homeowner. Confirm the professional’s relevant credentials.

Cleaning products do not replace a full inspection or mechanical cleaning when needed. CSIA notes that chemical products may be used by professionals in some cases, but loosened debris still needs removal and hidden structural problems can otherwise go unnoticed. See CSIA homeowner resources.

| Gas fireplace | Use the model’s manual and a qualified service professional for operation and service guidance. | The general wood-fire steps in this guide are not gas-fireplace instructions. |
Installation requirements, clearances, venting arrangements, fuel rules, and maintenance vary by model and location. Use the manual and local requirements for specifics; do not rely on general advice to resolve a suspected defect.
